Two-Handed Process Chart – Present Method
Two-Handed Process Chart – Proposed Method
Materials

1. Whole Onion
2. Knife
3. Chopping board
4. Plate
5. Table

Improvements

1. The work station layout changes. After the process improvement, the space for waste is move
near to the upper part of the chopping board which replacing the plate location, whole onion and
knife are place closely together at the center of chopping board and the plate were place at the
right side of the chopping board. This layout was proposed in order to reduce time for
transportation, thus decrease cycle time and decrease muscle fatigue by allowing things closer to
the body.
2. The major changes that can be seen in the process flow chart is switching two processes from
“removing skin then slicing onion into half” to “slicing onion into half then removing the skin”.
This substitution of order in the process bring improvements and it can be justify by the two-
handed process chart.
3. Through putting the knife and onion closely together at the center, the time decrease by 0.019
seconds (0.673-0.654). It can be seen in the first step on the two-handed process chart. This is just
one of the changes and improvements that can be seen through two-handed process chart.
4. The cycle time in the present method is 52.227 seconds and reduce to 37.442 seconds in the
Proposed Method. The cycle time reduce by 14.785 seconds which is 28.31% . the Present Method
can produce 69 pieces per hour { ( 1 hr*60 min*60 sec)/52.227 sec } while the Proposed Method
can produce 96 pieces per hour { ( 1 hr*60 min*60 sec)/37.442 sec }. Therefore, 28.31% reduction
in cycle time can produce 27 pieces per hour more than the Present Method.
5. Present Method ineffective time for left and right hand are 35.06% and 7.62% respectively with
respect to its cycle time. This means that left hand are not utilize properly and has a higher idle
time than right hand. On the other hand, Proposed Method ineffective time for left and right
hand are 45.32% and 15.01% respectively with respect to its cycle time. It means that the
proposed method increases idle time in the operation for both left and right hand. In conclusion,
the targets for this improvements are mainly to reduce cycle time, change process steps and apply
ergonomics. Overall, the improvents are measurable and yet have a great impact on increasing
yields.

Recommendations

1. I recommend that future analysts must find ways to make the process more safe, ergonomics,
simple, faster, efficient and effective through utilizing powertools, anti-cut resistant gloves and
safe process steps in the operations and through the use of correct and systematic methodology
for process improvements
2. Idle time must be decrease while allowing to maintain or reduce cycle time and both hands must
utilize properly because at it is being said in principles of motion, the two hands should move
simultaneously and should not be idle as well.
Note:

I did not include set up time and I just based the present method through what I see when my father
cut onions. The present method of the operation does not necessarily reflect to those any standard
methods or methods use by others. I just made improvements based on this benchmark.
