4.1 PEST ANALYSIS
In order to assess well the external environment of the industry
we conducted the PEST analysis to study Political, Economic,
Social and Technological Environment Changes.

4.1.1 POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT CHANGES

According to Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) website,
Tanzania is a peaceful and politically stable country in Africa
and it has never experienced a civil war or any internal strife
since its independence and the Tanzanian citizens live in peace
with a common identity without ethnic division. This has
encouraged an increase of investors in Tanzania.
This is further proved by the Tanzania National Bureau of
Statistics through their document: The State of the National
Economy (HALI YA UCHUMI WA TAIFA) 2021 shows a strength
of good commercial relationship between Tanzania and various
countries in the world including regional and international
communities.

4.1.2 ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT CHANGES

According to Tanzania Investment Centre, Economic Growth
and stability 2019. Tanzania is experiencing sustained
economic growth, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

6|Page
consistently growing at an average of 7% per annum for the
last ten years. This is a result of economic reforms and sound
economic policies that were introduced since the second half of
the 1990s. Over the past two decades, it has been transformed
from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented system
through successful implementation of free-market orientated
reforms. The Government has encouraged private sector-led
growth through the restoration of market forces and less
Government intervention in commercial activities. Overall the
reforms have resulted in positive growth trends and impressive
macro-economic indicators with inflation rates falling from
27.4% in 1995 to about 3.4% in 2019.

The National Bureau of Statistics Ministry of Finance and

Planning on July 2022 says that; during the first quarter in
2022, Gross Domestic Product (QGDP) in absolute terms at
current prices increased to TZS 43.4 trillion up from TZS trillion
38.9 achieved in the similar quarter in 2021. Meanwhile, QGDP
at 2015 constant prices also increased to TZS 34.9 trillion up in
2022 from TZS 33.1 trillion in the period under review in 2021,
equivalent to a growth of 5.4 percent. All economic activities
undertaken in the economy during the period of January to
March 2022 accounted for the overall growth of 5.4 %
compared to a growth of 5.0 % attained in the similar period in
2021. Economic activities that significantly contributed to the
growth include: Agriculture (19.6%), Construction (14.1%),
Manufacturing (9.0%), Construction (14.1%), Manufacturing
(9.0%); Mining and Quarrying (7.1 %); Trade and Repair (6.7
%); and Finance and Insurance (6.4%).
This accumulation of economic growth indicates an increase of
exportation and importation of goods in the country. For
example while Agriculture contribute 19.6% of the economy it
implies that there was an increase of exportation on
agricultural products as well as an increase of importation of

7|Page
agricultural tools and machinery. The same applies to other
industries like manufacturing, construction, mining and trade.
The increase of economy positively impacts on the logistic
industry as they give more opportunities for the industry
growth.

4.1.3 SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT CHANGES

Demographics
According to Ministry of finance and Planning report (HALI YA
UCHUMI WA TAIFA KATIKA MWAKA 2021) which was
published on June 2022, estimates that there was 59,441,988
population of people on 2021 compared to 57,637,628 on 2020
which is an increase of 3.1%.

This increase of population shows that there will be an increase

of supply and demand of various goods. And this will reflect the
increase of import and export requirements to meet the needs
of people, which will lead to more opportunities on Logistic
Industry.

Consumer attitude and Opinions

Consumer’s mindset within the country believes that other
goods from foreign countries have good quality and that we
lack sufficient industries in the country to meet the demand.
Most people think that our goods does not meet the
international standards thus they prefer to import from foreign
countries. On the other hand we produce and export raw
materials which are needed by other countries to manufacture
their goods. This will lead to an increase on Logistic industry.

4.1.4 TECHNOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT CHANGES

8|Page
Currently Tanzania is improving on the technology sector by
innovating various technological methods such as;
TANCIS (Tanzania Customs and Integrated Systems) is built on
hi-tech principles with a view to increasing effectiveness,
efficiency, transparency, and reliability in the Customs
administration. Being a web based system TANCIS
progressively facilitates paperless operations leading to a
significant reduction in costs of doing business. TANCIS has
replaced the previous customs management system –
ASYCUDA++ that has been in use in Tanzania since 2005.
TANCIS integrates several systems such as:
 Pre- Arrival Declaration (PAD)
 Customs Licensing Application Management
(CULAS/CULAMS)
 Oil Monitoring system
 ASYSCAN
 ASY-BANK
 Exemption Tracking system (ETS)

TANCIS simplifies logistic management activities especially on

clearing and forwarding, thus improving the logistic industry
environment within the country.

Web technology with the availability of internet and computing

devices such as computers and smartphones has made
accessibility of information easier and simplified communication
and tracking of data in the logistic industry.
Other technologies that has also improved the logistic industry
includes the payment systems such as:
 Bank transfer
 Card payment for example; master card, visa card
 Online payments

9|Page
 Internet banking
 E-commerce
 Sim banking
 Mobile payments
 Control Number Payment system

environments which promise the growth of logistic industry.
