The 1.8m diameter cylinder in Fig. 2 weighs 2270 Kg and is 1.5 m long. Determine the reactions at A
and B, neglecting friction.
Solution:
(a) According to the free body diagram, the reaction at A is due to the horizontal component
of the liquid force acting on the cylinder:
∑F = 0 → F
x H − FA = 0
(b) The reaction at B is the algebraic sum of the weight of the cylinder and the net
vertical component of the force due to the liquid. The curved surface CDB acted upon by the
liquid consists of a concave-downward part CD and a concave-upward part DB. The net
vertical component is the algebraic sum of the downward force and the upward force.
Upward: FV = weight of the liquid (real or imaginary) above curve DB:
)
FV = (0.800)(9.81)(1.5)(AD O B + AD O C E
ADOB is the area of sector DOB and ADOCE is the area of square DOCE
Downward force is the weight of the liquid above the curve DE:
Downward: FW = (0.800)(9.81)(1.5)(ADEC)
ADEC is the hatched area DEC in Fig. 14.
Noting that square DOCE upward less area DEC downward equals quadrant of circle DOC, the
net vertical component, which is the buoyant force and is equal to:
Note: In this particular problem, the upward component (buoyant force) equals the weight of the
displaced liquid to the left of the vertical plane COB.
∑F = 0 → F
y V net, + FB −W = 0
FB = (2270/1000) 9.81-8.987=13.28KN
