1 (a) What is Highway Engineering? Discuss the phase that dealt by Highway 10
Engineering.
(b) What are the objectives of land-use planning and control? Draw a typical 10
Cross-section of Urban and Rural Roads.
(c) What are the objectives of providing traffic separators on roads? Classifiy kerb 10
according to the height and describe each of them.
2 (a) Explain the factors on which the overtaking sight distance depends. Derive an 14
expression for calculating the overtaking sight distance on a road.
(b) Calculate the extra widening required for a pavement of width 7m on a 06
horizontal curve of radious 250m if the longest wheel base of the vehicle
expected on road is 6.1m. Design speed is 80 Kmph.
(c) Compute the minimum sight distance to avoid head on collision of two buses 10
approaching from the opposite directions. The speed of the buses are 65
Kmph and 80 Kmph, respectively and both bus has brake efficiency of 80%.
3 (a) Why are the transition curves introduced at the beginning and end of the 08
sharpe horizantal curves? What is valley curve?
(b) What is “Critical length of gradient” and “Floating gradient”? Desribe the 12
design steps for superelevation.
(c) A vertical summit curve is formed at the intersection of two gradients +1.5% 10
and - 4.0%. Design the length of summit curve to provide a stopping sight
distance for a design speed of 90 Kmph.
Section – B
6 (a) What is roadway capacity? Classify it and write down the importance of the 10
concept of highway capacity.
(b) What are the survey techniques used to collect urban freight data? 10
(c) Descrbe the importrance of infrastructure for econimic growth. 10
