When you talk about Tekla Evelina Severin - a photographer, art designer, set designer and colourist based in Sweden - your world will be blown away with a multitude of bold, arresting colours. Tekla started her journey working as an | interior architect in Stockholm and gradually transformed into a multidisciplinary artist easily identified by her penchant for bright, lively colours and minimalistic, eye-catching designs. Her vibrant work has led her to be counted as one of the top 200 influencers in her field - a feat that shouldn't be regarded lightly! In a bid to find out about the inspiration behind her distinctive style, we talked to her all about colour addiction, architecture and photography. Excerpts: Although you started off as an interior architect in ‘Stockholm in 2010, you now are a multidisciplinary artist who expresses herself through photography, art direction, set design and colour design. How did this evolution take place? | took my Bachelor's degree in interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack University of Ans and Crafts, 2010. | had already started as a trainer at a small architecture studio in Stockholm then and soon I became an employee. The intial time period was very educative, but after some years | became very tired of the conformity of the Scandinavian style, blond wood, white, grey beige and the carrera marble that was so popular at that time. Combined with the long project processes and the non-visual and no hands on approach made 16. ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY ‘me really crave after more creative processes, and at the least, colours and different perspectives! It was also at that time when smartphones with pretty-okay cameras had hit the market, and | realised how much | had missed photographing (At high school | had an old analogue camera and | observed everythingin the world through that lens) But now you could capture anything in a snap. it was also at that time when this new app called Instagram had launched. So that phone and app became my new creative platform, allowing ‘me to take mobile photos witha lot of colour and things | usually didn't get a chance to work with in everyday work life. ‘And the rest, as one would say, is history | took baby steps into the freelance life; working first 80% of the time then two days a week at the architect firm. Then in 2015, | started freolancing fulltime. In my first job, | was paid with shoes as it was a content collaboration with a Canadian shoe company. Since then, things have went slowly and steadily upwards. What exactly does colour design mean? In a physical and philosophical sense colour is light, and light is fe Ina physical and an emotional sense, colours the frst thing you recognise before seoing shape or space and it immediately 11 impact on you, whether you're aware of it or not. Some impacts are biological and others are cultural and personal How important is colour design in architectural photography and how do they complement each other? For me it's highly important since colour is my main focus in any project | do; not just in architecture photography, but | can't tellin general. However in all good architecture, shape and colour is/should be onelliting each other However, photography isn’t architecture and vice versa. 1 have the highest respect for architecture as art and function. It's very complex on so many levels, you can never understand it via a photograph. ‘Your images have a mesmerising colour scheme to them which is subtle and complementing, yet powerful. Are you able to find these opportunities by research/chance or are these usually sets that are created specifically for the shoot? ‘Thank you. Commissioned Photography projects are often a both win-win ways situation. 'm often contacted to shoot projects that are a match with my style, for example | have portrayed several of Camille Walala’s bold and graphical installations and designs. We're a perfect match. But in general, for my personal/ non-commissioned photography - | have my eyes and ears open for interesting places and locations, but I can also find see something beautiful pretty much everywhere. For my set design /creative direction/studio Photography, | of course design everything exactly as I want it /for fitting the current project perfectly. So yes, in these cases its designed exclusively or that photo shoot. ‘You were featured in the top 200 influencers in this field ‘a while ago. Do you feel that adds more responsibility land pressure? More the followers and more the audience, more the responsiblity of course. And sometimes, pressure when you are low. Even if with time and experience that becomes less over the years. But no, | don't feel that ttle in itself brought any heavy responsibilty in itself. | actualy just thought it was nice mention and achievement to be honest. Could you give us insights into your creative process when working on a project? How do you choose the colour schemes and create the geometry-inspired ‘composition for the photographs? , I've been running all my projects - no matter of discipline pretty much the same way. For commissioned projects/studio photo shoot | always st board, based on the interpretation of the tas rt with creating a mood and etc., then designing the colour scheme for it, tone-on-tone or in contrast depending on how much I want something to be bold and popping or smooth and camouflage. But my general method is, ‘Something dirty and something firty usually makes a good balance’ Then | create exact sketches in 3D (sketch-up) even planning styling, placing it out, and choosing camera angles and planning lighting, For personal photography/architecture photography, | don't plan. Just make sure to be there a long time, walking around, seeing new angles and seeing how the light A great unique experience | had was staying at an apartment at Muralla Fo, Calpe by Ricardo Bofll architects, seeing how light was moving drastically throughout the hours of the day... True mag Where do you draw your inspiration from - whether it's in photography, architecture, interior design, colours or any other field? This might sound lke a cliche but | actually get my inspiration from everywhere. It could be art just as well or it could be something | occasionally discovered at an ugly backstreet or just the sunlight hitting something which is otherwise not so. vivid, But in general, working disciplinary of one field gives inspiration to another field and vice versa. And | would never have seen the angles, the straight views and the connections in Architecture Photography if | hadn't work with architecture. | have a very holistic view of life and work. ‘Speaking of inspiration, you appear in many of your photographs dressed in vibrant outfits perfectly matching the settings - what's the philosophy behind these images? Wsnota philosophy at all, but just about the visuals them: When starting with it, | saw it more lke a visual story or even diay, tolling the story about the space while putting it in the context ‘of mysolf - a human presence, my persy human scale, Then | started see it more like using any other element in an image; more objectively like a furniture, a vase or whatever; and planning the outfits to make a part of the ime fing. For me, i's never about truth, documenting or sending a message of some kind. For me its strictly visual and aesthetical If possible, lke indoors or wherever itis feasible to put up a ‘ipod and actin front of camera, | like taking self-portraits. What are your thoughts on post-processing? Is there an increased level of post-processing work on your images’ | always edit ight, saturation and exact crop in post-production. Then it totaly depends, it could be a project like Toniton.com when we need to show all colour optior zi nasing the products but don’t have the possibilty o build all the sets ina ‘colour combinations. In such a case, we needed a lat of retouch for the different variations and hited a retoucher for that reason, In the camera lens”. | think it's when the magic happens for photography - when all elements come together in the camera. But like to have many ‘options, it's often afterwards looking at the photos | see what really works or not, which is the bost take. What message would you like to give our readers, especially photographers when it comes to embracing the boldness of colours? | don't see using colour in photography as an intrinsic value (As | do in city planning, interior and architecture for example. Since studies show we have better well-being when living in ‘surroundings that's more alike our natural heritage with alot of ‘nuances, and lots of warmth; ike the sun set, the fire place ete. Not concrete, glass and steel). But in case you want to make things more visible in your Photography, it could be a great too! to use since colour works ‘so immediately for the eye. And | would recommend everyone to study colour theory, the history and culture of colour use. It's so interesting. A great book about colours, for example, Is “The Anatomy of Colours - The Story of Heritage Paints and Pigments’, Thames & Hudson. ‘Also remember, colour is always relative, never absolute. It appears totally different depending on what colour i's next to, ‘depending on ight and point of compass. | s0@ colour as a never ending dialogue. ‘TEXT: NITYAPRIVA KALIVATH MAY 2001.28 PRO PROFILE, Ahomegrown, well-known name inthe architectural and interior photography circles of the country, Photographix India (PHX India) is headed by founder Sebastian Zachariah along with fellow partner and architect, Ira Gosalia. Although PHX India started offsolely t as a photography studio, under the care of the founding team, it has now evolved into an imaging services company offering not only photography, but also videography styling, and digital media expertise for professionals in the architecture and interior design field, With their eye for quality and unique perspective, PHX India has made its own mark in this ever-changing, ever-growing field. We talked to Sebastian and Ira about all things architecture, interiors and photography. Excerpts: How was the idea of Photographix conceptualised? ‘SZ: Moving on from one profession to anather every 2-3 years finally took a break when | decided to try my POV in photography and architectural photography was decided upon because the payments by architects (my clients) were usually fon time. True story! As | was toying with the idea of going professional - the norm was to print a business card that says ‘Sebastian Zachariah Photography. Well, it was no different for me. Couple of years later I realised that this idea is very myopic ‘and very limited in its seope and | had a larger world view about the business of photography that | wanted to indulge in. It was then that I change the name of the firm to Photographix (Graphix was included because | was a graphic designer before | completely moved into photography and thought | will aways find a way to do both and they do go well toget Your work has been featured in numerous publications. Could you tell us about Photographix's journey of gaining this level of recognition? ‘SZ: There is saying - a big shot is a ite shot that keeps shooting! | hope that answers the question! | know the reason why my pictures were preferred over another professionals ‘work in some cases. I had a graphics background and Photo- ‘graphix was true to its name. The images have a graphical ‘quality about it. The choice of left alignment to right alignment land use of negative spaces where text can be beautifully inserted... became the aspects that art directors and editors loved about our work. We just did more ofthat. Another reason Was that we refused to put achip on our shoulder when it came to deciding which assignments to take and which to refuse. The refusal would only come when our terms were not respected. otherwise | believe one should never be judgmental about a designer's work, You may love some and not understand a few... but you put in your 100% and more when you take on the assignment. So what can you do in such situation? The best solution to this difficuty is you can buy a teleconverter for your lens. Teleconverters are generally much Pocket-friendly than a buying a brand new lens and it can also ‘multiply the focal distance of your lens anywhere from 1.4 times t02 times. But stl, you might have a question in mind that why do people buy lenses if teleconverters are cheap and can help ‘them? Well nothing is perfect and every technology has its own pros and cons just ike teleconverters do. So should you really buy one or save money for a good lens? We will help you to ‘clear your doubt so you can decide whether to save money for the lens oF go for the cheaper option. In this article we'll look into some of the pros and cons of teleconverters, ‘The Pros of Teleconverters Focal Length - The best proft of using @ teloconverter on your ‘camera is that it increases the focal length of the lens you use it with, A 1.4x teleconverter wil give you an extra 40% of the available focal length (For example extending a 200mm will sive 280mm) and a 2x converter will give you a double boost (For example extending a 400mm lone will give 800mm). The ‘benefits of this extra zoom is clear ~it could tur the framing of a full body shot of an eagle captured from a long distance to a ‘lose framed head shot which reveals the sharp beak and eyes. Cost -In comparison to the price of purchasing a 600mm lens, getting a teleconverter is a best way to save money. Weight - You must have seen some of the telephoto lenses Used in wildlife and sports photography like the 400mm or {600mm lenses, but they can be quite bulky and heavy. It is advisable to add a 2x extender to a small lens rather than ‘buying one of the bulky ones and you will ave your back from carrying some real weight, ‘Minimum Focus Distance ~ Adding an extender to your lens ‘means you can keep the minimum focus distance of your lens with you. This can be really helpful when you are looking for a smaller lens and you don't have time to change the current one. It won't really compare to a dedicated zoom lens — but can be very helpful in such situations, ‘The Cons of Teleconverters Lens Speed ~ The first point to keep in mind when using a teleconverter is ts impact on the amount light getting into you camera sensor. Using teleconverters means less light entering inside which means the maximum aperture of the lens wi be decreased. Using a 1.4x teleconverter will d ase your aperture by one stop and using a 2x converter will decrease the aperture by two stops. Ifthe weather is good and you have plenty of light, then it won't affect your images. However, if you're capturing in low ight or in a stadium you'll notice the ‘outcome of this more, Camera Shake - As you increase the focal length of a lens by an extender or another lens, any motion of your camera will become more visible. Using a teleconverter enlarges both your subject and any motion in your camera s0 you have to think cautiously about how to reduce it or get rid of i, either by a a cata 4 i 0 — .———— Cat2x using a ripod/monopod and/or using a higher shutter speed or some other technique to secure your images. Focussing Speed - Another negative point of using a teleconverter is that they slow down the focus speed of your camera, This will change from lens to lens but i's @ real issue in lower light. Some lower end cameras will not be able to use auto focus at all with some teleconverters at some aperture values or at all; so do check compatiblity of your camera before getting a teleconverter. To get rid of slow focussing, switch your shooting to manual focus and master the mode. After a while you will be astonished how quickly you get used atx tot and it's definitely a useful ski to have. Image Degradation - Extenders not only increase the focal distance, but also any cons of the lens you use it with. As a Eatax result you will observe on many lenses that photo quality degrades. Especially in the case with longer extender (2x) where sharpness and contrast degrades, particularly when shooting in daylight (where flaring and ghosting can be a problem). Use the best quality lens available with you and it will help keep such Issues as less a it can be. Overall Verdict Using telaconverters is a more inexpensive way to extend your focal lenath than to buy a longer lens. However, saving the cost can directly affect your photo quality and camera performance if you are not using a high quality lens in decent light. When using a teleconverter, try not to use it at the maximum aperture which your camera allows but stop it one stop at least and the outcome will be a lot better. Also note that bigger focal lengths will lave you with less depth of field area to play with - so your focussing needs to be perfect. Teleconverters vs Cropping Instead of using a teleconverter, you can capture your photos with whatever lens available to you and then to crop those photos later in your post- production stage. This is defintely the dit cheap option available, however you will see better results with a teleconverter. You can go for cropping but if you really want to stand out and get good images, converter is the best option to go for.
