Carving on wood is similar to that in stone.

It starts with splitting a tree trunk before roughly


creating the design with an ax before using shaping tools on the wood. Once the carving takes
place, the artist smoothens the surface and decides on the finishing which can involve glass
embellishing, painting or gilding. Narra, Molave and Kamagong.

The more popular Filipino woodcarvers are the Ifugaos, the Tagbanwas, the Maranaos and the
Paetenos.

Ifugaos- north
- nicarve nila yung mountain slopes that from the Banaue rice terraces.
- also famous for wood carvings, usually deities, meron kasi silang diety na I bul-ul na
pinaniniwalaan nila nagbibigay ng good harvest sa kanila.

Tagbana Woodcarvers- south


- So kung yung mga ifugaos- focus sa beliefs and customs yung mga Tagbanwa naman is
for fun lang talaga. And ito yung factor bakit nag stand out yung wood carvings nila kasi
sinasabing it have a close affinities to near-abstract art. Yung carving nila more on
nagseserve as toys for children, décor in houses or a means of sef expression.

Maranao Wood Carvers


- They are using okkil motif in most of their works, to show their strong indigenous
character, deriving inspiration from local plants, sea corals and native objects.
- It is carved in musical objects and kitchen wares.

Woodcarvers of Paete- it is the center of woodcarving in the Philippines. Paete continues to be


one of the best sources of fine woodcarvings. In this town, woodcarving has been elevated to a
fine art form which is no wonder, because the name Paete comes from the word paet, which
literally means chisel.
IVORY CARVING
The Philippines has a long tradition of using elephant ivory for more than 400 years, ever
since the Spanish arrived, bringing Catholicism and a demand for ecclesiastical statues known
as santos.
TUSKS- an elongated greatly enlarged tooth (as of an elephant or walrus) that projects
when the mouth is closed and serves especially for digging food or as a weapon.

SEMI PRECIOUS STONES AND SHELL CARVINGS


Stones- garnet opal and jade

Example include rock crystals. They also use softer materials such as corals and shells. When
working with hard stones, they use metal tools, abrasive powders, and diamond drills to work on
the shapes. For the soft mineral materials such as amber, they lean on the use of chisels and
knives which can easily cut into the masses, thus helping them bring the forms to life.
