III. SUMMARY
This study explores human flourishing (HF) in adolescents with cancer (AC) as witnessed by their
health care providers, and it develops a list of critical attributes associated with HF to describe the
positive outcomes witnessed. The study used a qualitative descriptive design incorporating data from
an open-ended electronic survey and semi-structured individual interviews with 17 pediatric oncology
health care providers. We found 3 major themes (positive forward motion, connectedness, and self-
character) representing 11 critical attributes of human flourishing in AC: (1) initiative and enterprise,
(2) positivity and evocativeness, (3) tranquility and maturity, (4) perseverance and tenacity, (5)
compassion and empathy, (6) social engagement and connection, (7) wisdom and translation into life,
(8) supportive background, (9) self-awareness and self-agency, (10) transcendence and full potential,
and (11) meaning-making. Understanding the concept of HF as it applies to the needs of AC is a step
toward establishing it as a comprehensive health care goal and toward developing care provider
guidelines for its promotion.

IV. PERSONAL REACTION/ INSIGHT

In my point of view, cancer patients that maintain strong, social ties to family and friends may be
better able to cope with their disease, both mentally and physically. Positive social support during the
exact moments of greatest stress is crucial. If you have a patient with cancer, keeping them company
during their healing process probably will help reduce their stress. The impact is likely to be as
effective, and possibly more effective, than cancer patients going through the process alone.

V. NURSING IMPLICATION
A. TO NURSING PRACTICE
As a student nurse, I believe the study’s implication to nursing practice is that, it will provide a much
broader basis of assessing a person’s physiological health. As new and unprecedented negative events
such as genetic and sudden changes in a person’s body, the impact of its effect would also cause
unfamiliar reactions from people which health care providers must take into consideration. The
accustomed ways of how individuals with health problems are assessed, managed and treated will
have a huge revision for improvement for at this moment, everyone is affected. Not only those
diagnosed with physiological challenges are subjected to progress but for those providing care and to
everyone as well.

B. TO NURSING EDUCATION
As a student nurse, I believe the study’s implication to nursing education is in great proportion with
how the study may contribute with nursing practice. As mentioned above, the customary techniques
of how said health problems are prevented, managed and treated will ameliorate and will be
congruent of how experienced nurses and health care professionals would discuss it to student nurses
and fresh graduates to further expand their knowledge regarding the said problem. The reformed
discourse will benefit inexperienced health care providers, especially student nurses as it will serve as
a guide to providing a more efficient nursing interventions at present and in the near future.

C. TO NURSING RESEARCH
As a student nurse, I believe the study’s implication to nursing research is that it will help current and
future nursing studies with regards to said health problem’s prevention and treatment further
improve as the study provides a broad apprehension of how the condition is developed. Despite the
country’s not enough monetary support for fighting the disease, the additional data gathered of other
possible causes to the development of such condition are already useful as they will be used as
experimental variables towards a productive outcome. Post evaluation, the then accomplished end
result will be applied which throughout the coming years will again be used as a basis for a more
superior nursing research for a major contribution to its development.
