SB 2-10-19 - Notes - Version 1
ŚB 2.10.11
vivakṣoḥ — when there was a need to speak; mukhataḥ — from the mouth; bhūmnaḥ — of
the Supreme; vahniḥ — fire or the controlling deity of fire; vāk — vibration; vyāhṛtam —
speeches; tayoḥ — by both; jale — in the water; ca — however; etasya — of all
these; suciram — a very, very long time; nirodhaḥ — suspension; samajāyata — did continue.
▪ Translation
When the Supreme desired to speak, speeches were vibrated from the mouth. Then the
controlling deity Fire was generated from the mouth. But when He was lying in the water,
all these functions remained suspended.
▪ Purport
The peculiarity of the gradual development of the different senses is simultaneously
supported by their controlling deities. It is to be understood, therefore, that the activities of
the sense organs are controlled by the will of the Supreme. The senses are, so to speak,
offering a license for the conditioned souls, who are to use them properly under the control
of the controlling deity deputed by the Supreme Lord. One who violates such controlling
regulations has to be punished by degradation to a lower status of life.
Consider, for example, the tongue and its controlling deity, Varuṇa. The tongue is meant for
eating, and men, animals and birds each have their different tastes because of different
licenses. The taste of human beings and that of the swine are not on the same level. The
controlling deity, however, awards or certifies a particular type of body when the particular
living entity develops a taste in terms of different modes of nature. If the human being
develops taste without discrimination, as does the swine, then the controlling deity is
certainly certified for the next term to award him the body of a swine. The swine accepts any
kind of foodstuff, including stools, and a human being who has developed such indiscriminate
taste must be prepared for a degraded life in the next life. Such a life is also God’s grace
because the conditioned soul desired a body like that for perfectly tasting a particular type of
foodstuff. If a man gets the body of a swine it must be considered the grace of the Lord
because the Lord awards the facility. After death the next body is offered by superior control,
not blindly. A human being, therefore, must be on his guard as to what sort of body he is going
to have in the next life. An irresponsible life of indiscrimination is risky, and that is the
declaration of all scriptures.
▪ Om Ajnana timirandasya
▪ Vancha kalpaturu
- 1st Shloka -
- Then we saw the meanings of the terms Adyatmik (the person or the Jiva that is being
controlled), Adhidaivic (the demigods who control the subtle senses) and Adhibautik (the
Body consisting of the gross senses and that which distinguishes the controller and controlled,
i.e., the material body, ).
- All 3 are interdependent. Thus none of them are ashyara of the shelter or the source of
everything. The ashraya is the Supreme Being, the Supersoul who witnesses all the other 3.
He is the only independent without any shelter. He is sheltered by Himself thus referred as
the Svasraya – one who has His own shelter. This is described in shloka 9 of this chapter.
- Question is who made them all interdependent. That person must be the ultimate
Independent person. Janmadyasya yatho anvayad……and also in BG 15.18, Lord says He is
the source of everything. ato ’smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ - Purusha-Uttama
(Because I am transcendental, beyond both the fallible and the infallible, and because I am
the greatest, I am celebrated both in the world and in the Vedas as that Supreme Person)
- From Shlokas 10, we can see Sukhadev Gosvami starts describing the purpose of offering
devotional service to the Supreme Lord.
- SP beautifully explains the dependence of the 3 on the Independent – the Supreme Lord.
Electric instrument depend on the power from the Powerhouse which depends on the
reservoir of water which depends on the rais which depends on the clouds which depends
on the sun which depends on the creation which ultimately depends on the Supreme Lord
who is the Cause of all causes.
Sukhadeva Gosvami goes on to explain how… from His energies and by His will, the virat-
purusa gradually develops, just as a child develops within the womb.
First the Virata rupa’s sense energy, mental force and bodily strength are generated. They
dictate the living entities movements just as a King movements define lead his citizens.
Next since the virat-purusa is a living force, he develops hunger, thirst, and opens his month.
Then the palate, ears, eyes, nostrils, legs, hand, skin, genital. Anus, navel, mind, abdomen,
intestines, life breath, blood, fat, marrow and bone (adhi bautik person) is generated.
Then the appropriate controlling deity (Adi-daivik) is generated – example Varuna the
demigod controlling the sense of taste and tongue. Or Sungod for the Eyes. And so on.
The person who will experience material life due to these senses and the propensities is the
adiatmik.
- Living entity sees when the Lord sees, smell when the Lord smells….and so on.
- This explains the saying ‘Man proposes God disposes’
We need to understand these in context before we dwell into the shloka for today -
Shloka 2.10.19
Srila Prabhupada then goes on to explain this with the context of the Tongue.
- Tongue can be used for tasting the various foods and also for speech. Lets look at
each of these in detail.
- The Jiva while it is bound by the 3 modes, still has the free will. Each animal and bird
will eat only that item prescribed for it and only exact quantity its quota (Ishavasyam
principle) Example of Mayapur – the case of the birds coming in the morning pecking
only their share and going on. Or the cat having their share of the milk and the
biscuits and leaving the crumbs for the ants. At the end of the morning, the place is
cleaned up. The Lord provides for every one’s needs.
- However human is the only one does not look at his needs but also looks to satiate
his greed. He will eat for himself and explore beyond and also hoard even if he does
not want it for now. Example of rich nations hoard tons and tons of grains and
resources when people in poor nations are dying due to poverty.
- If we use the Tongue for tasting unnecessary things that are not palatable – then we
have to face the consequences. Srila Prabhupada gives the example of how the one
who enjoys eating anything anywhere ends up getting the life of a swine.
- Wrong usage of the tongue can create complications in the form of punishment to
the individual
First let’s look at the need to regulate one’s eating and recreation (Yukta ahara & viharasya)
–
What do we eat ? When do we eat ? How much do we eat ? How do we eat ? All of these
things are required to be regulated.
BG 9.26
In the previous verse i.e. V.16, we have seen this already and also in the PP to this verse Srila
Prabhupada clearly explains - As far as eating is concerned, it can be regulated only when one
is practiced to take and accept prasadam, sanctified food. Lord Krishna is offered, according
to the BG 9.26, vegetables, flowers, fruits, grains & milk etc. In this way a person in Krishna
consciousness becomes automatically trained not to accept food that is not meant for human
consumption or not in the category of goodness.
Lord is not responsible for giving us the foodstuffs….he is also responsible for creating the fire
in our stomach to digest these foodstuff… Aham vaishvanaro bhutva, praninam
dehamastritaha. Prana paana samayukta pachamyannam chaturvidam..(BG 15.14)
Lord helps in the digestion of all the 4 types of foods (those that are drunk, those that are
chewed, those that are licked up and those that are sucked).
yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo
mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ
bhuñjate te tv aghaṁ pāpā
ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt
The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is
offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily
eat only sin.
BG 3.14 Srila Prabhupada says something that Is of relevance today in the COVID situation
-
…the devotees of the Lord, who are in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, offer food to Kṛṣṇa and then eat-
a process which nourishes the body spiritually. By such action not only are past sinful
reactions in the body vanquished, but the body becomes immunized to all contamination of
material nature. When there is an epidemic disease, an antiseptic vaccine protects a person
from the attack of such an epidemic. Similarly, food offered to Lord Viṣṇu and then taken by
us makes us sufficiently resistant to material affection, and one who is accustomed to this
practice is called a devotee of the Lord. Therefore, a person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, who eats
only food offered to Kṛṣṇa, can counteract all reactions of past material infections, which are
impediments to the progress of self-realization. On the other hand, one who does not do so
continues to increase the volume of sinful action, and this prepares the next body to resemble
hogs and dogs, to suffer the resultant reactions of all sins. The material world is full of
contaminations, and one who is immunized by accepting prasādam of the Lord (food offered
to Viṣṇu) is saved from the attack, whereas one who does not do so becomes subjected to
contamination. (from purport Bg 3.14)
In fact this is one of very first instructions given to us by Srila Rupa Goswami in the Nectar of
Instruction also, where he is asking us to control 6 urges of the body and the mind :
Jihva vegam - the urges of the tongue (what kind of urges - to taste and eat all kinds of
foodstuff)
That is why Srila Vinod Thakur has given us the wonderful prayer that we all recite before
honoring prasadam - Sarira avidya jala, jodendriya tahe kaal, jive phele visaya sagare, taara
madhe jihva ati…….
Meaning - Of all the senses, the tongue is the most voracious and most uncontrollable. It is
very difficult to conquer the tongue in this world, but You Krishna are very kind to us. You
have sent us this nice prasada to help us conquer the tongue, therefore let us take this
prasada to our full satisfaction and glorify Your Lordships Sri Sri Radha & Krishna and in love
call for the help of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda prabhu.
So just because it is prasadam, does it mean we can overindulge ourselves. Sanctified food
anyways - let me go on eating like there is no tomorrow ?
No. Because even if it is prasadam, we must not indulge in Átyaahara’or over-eating - which
is one of the 6 points that can spoil our devotional service (NOI verse 2).
In the same purport, Srila Prabhupada goes on to add that - However, if one accepts prasāda
only because of its palatable taste and thus eats too much, he also falls prey to trying to satisfy
the demands of the tongue. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught us to avoid very palatable dishes
even while eating prasāda. If we offer palatable dishes to the Deity with the intention of
eating such nice food, we are involved in trying to satisfy the demands of the tongue. If we
accept the invitation of a rich man with the idea of receiving palatable food, we are also trying
to satisfy the demands of the tongue. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya 6.227) it is stated:
“That person who runs here and there seeking to gratify his palate and who is always attached
to the desires of his stomach and genitals is unable to attain Kṛṣṇa.”
In terms of how much should one eat - Srila Prabhupada often says that we should eat
prasadam upto 50% of our stomach’s capacity, 25% must be filled with water and the
remaining 25% with air, to allow for easy digestion.
What we eat, how much we eat, when we eat also have a direct co-relation or impact on our
ability to render devotional service in spiritual life.
A lot of people often complain about being unable to wake up early in the morning to do their
sadhana. Why is this so ? What we eat has a direct influence on our consciousness, our
thoughts, our desires, where the mind goes, what it wants to engage in and therefore
determine our actions in terms of the different activities that we perform. GIGO - Garbage In
Garbage Out - as simple as that.
If we examine this closely All of these are inter-connected - how much we eat, when we eat,
what we eat has a direct impact on how we sleep and with what consciousness. So if we
manage one thing, then the rest of the items will also fall into place.
Those who suffer from diseases of the stomach must be unable to control the urges
(Tarasnaaa) of the belly, at least according to this analysis. When we desire to eat more than
necessary we automatically create many inconveniences in life.
However, if we observe fasting days like Ekādaśī and Janmāṣṭamī, then we can restrain the
demands of the belly.
Example of our fasting on Festival days so that we can concentrate on the Lord.
And that brings us to the next 2 points that Lord Krishna is making in this verse :-
Speech. Any unwanted use of the tongue to gossip or speak ill of the others is considered
as Prajalpa !!!
Going back to the Nectar of Instruction again, Srila Rupa Goswami in the 2nd verse refers to
6 things that can spoil our devotional service if we get entangled in any of them. What are
these ?-
(1) Sarga:—Five elements, Five sense perceptions, ten sense-organs, Mind, Consciousness, ego. A
combination of this is the Cosmic manifestation including their original form in transcendance.
(2) Visarga:—Direct creation from Brahma, lord of the universe called Brahmanda.
(3) Sthiti:—Maintenance by the Personality of Godhead. Brahma is the Constructor of the universe,
Shiva is the destructor but Vishnu is the maintainer.
(4) Poshana:—Special care for the devotees. The king maintains his kingdom and looks after the
maintenance of his subjects but yet he has his special attention upon his family members. In the
same way the Personality of Godhead has His special care for His devotees who are completely
surrendered souls unto Him. This is called Poshana (family maintenance).
(5) Uti:—Urge for creation or the initiative power which is the cause of all inventions according to
the necessities of time, space and object.
(6) Manvantara:—Regulative principles for the living being who desires to make a perfection of
human life. The rules of Manu as described in the Manu Samhita are the guidance to such way of
perfection.
(7) Ishakatha:—Scriptural information in the matter of the Personality of Godhead, His descent on
the earth, the activities of His devotees, His agents, etc. Any scripture which deals in these subjects is
essential for human life in progress.
(8) Nirodhe:—Winding up of all potential energies employed in the matter of creation. Such
potencies are imanations from the Personality of Godhead Who eternally sleeps in the Karana
Ocean. Along with his breath the cosmic creation is manifested and wound up in due course.
(9) Mukti:—Liberation of the conditioned souls who have been encaged in the gross and subtle
coverings of body and mind. Mukti is the stage of living being when he is free from all material
affections.
(10) Ashraya:—The transcendence or Summum Bonum from Whom everything emanates, in Whom
everything rests and in everything merges into, is the Absolute Whole Supersoul.
