3 Obtaining and Removing Materials

Word Meaning Picture

Diffusion Diffusion is the random movement
of particles spreading out from an
area of high concentration to an
Before diffusion
area of low concentration.
Diffusion happens in liquids and
gases.
Diffusion is passive transport. It
requires no energy. After diffusion
Facilitated Happens when large molecules
diffusion move from high to low
concentration. It needs a protein
channel to move the molecules.
Facilitated diffusion is passive
transport. It requires no energy.
Osmosis Happens when water molecules
move from low to high
concentration. It requires a semi-
permeable membrane.
Osmosis is passive transport. It
requires no energy.
Endocytosis Happens when cell membrane
surrounds large molecules and
they enter the cell. This moves
from low to high concentration. It
is active transport. It requires
energy and uses ATP to move
materials.
Exocytosis Happens when cell membrane
surrounds large molecules and
they exit the cell. This moves from
low to high concentration. It is
active transport. It requires energy
and uses ATP to move materials.
Grade 7 Topic 1.4 Cell Division

Cell Cycle
• Cell division occurs because of 4 situations
1. Cell Growth 3. Cell Replacement
2. Cell Repair 4. Cell Reproduction

Cell Division
Stage Name Description Picture
1 Interphase The cell grows,
makes a copy
of its DNA, and
prepares for
cell division.

2 Mitosis The cell divides

into 2 new
cells which are
identical to
each other.

3 Cytokinesis The cytoplasm

divides
distributing the
organelles
creating 2
identical cells.
The cell re-
enters
interphase.
Mitosis – 4 phases
1. Prophase – DNA condenses into separate chromosomes; Nuclear
membrane starts to break apart.
2. Metaphase – Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell.
3. Anaphase – Fibers connect from the centrioles to the chromatids.
4. Telophase – Chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell; Nuclear
membrane reforms around the DNA
