Reading ageIn this newspaper article, Lynn Barber writes that she ts supposed to clean up
hher act when the grandchildren come to stay. No chance, she says.
Bad granny “~ ~
1 don't think Mother's Day existed
in my childhood, or certainly
not in the Barber household.
My parents didn’t believe in.
5 sentiment, or celebrations. | only
encountered the full horror when
Thad children myself and they
‘would come home from nursery
with some hideous heart-shaped
10 card saying they'd spent all week making it. Whereupon I would
snort: “Don't they give you anything better to do? Can't they teach you
‘multiplication or something?” And then theyd go crying to Daddy and
Td have to say, “Sorry, sorry, only joking.” and put the beastly cards on
the mantelpiece to gather dust for a few weeks.

celebrating Mother's Day, which led to tears and tantrums all round.
My duties then included not only nagging the children to make cards,
but also nagging my husband to produce something and hissing
furtously: “Buying flowers at the garage on the way down doesn't

in-law presented the daughters, then aged four and stx, with shiny
‘white nylon Tshirts saying love my granny’, I tried all the usual
threats, but eventually had to give them a fiver each to get them to
wear them for the day. I swore then I would never be a granny.
25 ‘Well, now I am ~ it’s something that happens if you wait long
enough - and it ain‘t too bad. In fact, it's the sunny uplands of
parenting ~ the hugs and laughs without the nappy-changing. I go to
‘see my grandchildren every other weekend and occasionally have them
to stay with me in London, though always with grave and usually
0 justifiable misgivings. They don't break that many things, though they
io leave a sickly trail across the carpet; its more that my daughters
lame me if the grandchildren hurt themselves.
‘This year for the first time I had them here for Christmas and
thought I deserved some sort of granny medal for putting up a
35 Christmas tree. ‘Oh, Mum!” one daughter wailed, “You've put glass
