ASFC Foundation Art and Design

Unit 1: Mega Structures

Deadline Date - Monday 3rd October 2022

“After one hundred years of new ways and means of making sculpture one cannot fail to be
impressed by all that has been achieved in this relatively rare human activity. A huge new
instrument has been created to help us enrich and understand our lives, a development, which
has not just kept astride with the scientific and technological development in this century but
also expand its horizons and originated an important role in giving these innovations meaning
and sense. At the end of the last century there existed a very large non-art world, this means
that there were still many objects and materials that had not been used to make art with. At the
end of this century this non-art world has shrunk considerably and is now almost identical to the
art world.”

Tony Cragg
(Notes from a lecture given at the Kroller-Muller museum, Arnheim 1995)

Your Unit will be broken into three categories:

1. Organise, record, consider and document

○ You will work collectively and individually to locate found objects which could be explored further.
○ You will select, record, organise and analyse the collection you have found, to understand the
nature of the collection.
○ You will need to consider and record size, line, colour, surface and texture. You should document
these visual elements through the process of photographic, written and drawing tasks and build
this record into your journal.

2. Construct, build and occupy

○ Again with guidance and paying attention to safe working practices, you will build your 'mega
structure' installation piece.
○ This will involve you thinking and considering space, form, structure, stability, composition and
should involve close collaboration and consideration.

3. Response, draw, record and document

○ You will participate in a number of tutor led workshops exploring handmade drawing equipment and
recording processes.
○ You will explore what drawing consists of in the broadest sense using interesting techniques and
processes. This process is intended to be experimental in nature, underpinned by contextual
references.
○ To appreciate the value of this process you must suspend judgement and not be too precious
about individual success or failures of outcomes.

Your journal is crucial in this section to record your thoughts, journeys, actions, processes,
success and failures. It is a working document which should reflect on the processes as a whole
to understand the creative potential of alternative approaches to art work. You will develop
connections between your thoughts and the artists tutors refer to during sessions. This must be
recorded in your journal.

ASSESSMENT

Unit 1-Assessment……..You will each receive a pass or a referral.

Organise, record, consider and document.

● Handmade journal with record of research, as well as annotated techniques and processes.
● Sheets of large scale drawings and photographs showing the found objects before they become part of the
sculpture. These should show size, line, colour, surface and texture.
Construct, build and occupy.

● You should design ideas and describe any processes you aim to use.
● Create a sheet recording/photographing the process of constructing the installation piece and explain the
materials, media and objects used. This should have reference to the three main sculptors you researched Cornelia
Parker, Sarah Sze and Alexander Calder.
This should include some photographs taken of the whole piece from different angles.
Response, draw, record and document.

● Mark making techniques with photographs of your hand made tools and the drawings produced with them of the
installation.
● Drawings and experimentation from tutor led workshops.
● Photographs of the group drawing of the installation from all angles (In journal or on a sheet).
● One individual drawing of the installation using varied media and one chalk on black paper showing the negative
space and pattern.
You will also need to record this in your journal.

From this point onwards you will need to record all work in your journal (as this is your working diary to
record thoughts, research, photographs and drawings/designs.) This will need recording using free periods
and balancing your time.
