Applied Scenario Activity: Risk Treatment

Note: Knowledge check questions based upon the applied scenario will take a different format. These checks are
designed to make you (the attendee) think more about your role within AB Brynne. In some cases they will have more
than one possible answer. They will often require more thought about the company and further research. As such, they
are not intended to gauge how much you remember but rather how you interpret and apply the knowledge.

Now we will shift our focus to the collaborative partnership that AB Brynne has with a major public
university in the UK. This partnership is exploring methods of producing cultured meat products. The
research has been under way for several years.

Question 1
What are some of the possible sources for total risk?

Question 2
Using the formula below, calculate the ALE.

The AV is valued at $200,000.00. The EF is 0.3% and the ARO is estimated to be 0.5, or once every
two years.

AV x EF of =

SLE x ARO =
Question 3
Fill in the diagram and then use the flow chart to perform a risk assessment on the risk identified in
Question 2 above.

Possible answers may include:
• The campus is an open environment; it is open to visitors to the city and the university itself.

• Some students may be engaged as assistants to the research department, again, with no
checks.
• The intellectual property (IP) will have value, potentially a lot of value. It may not be properly
protected, with little or no physical or logical access control.
• The university may the victim of an attack from both insiders (staff, students) and outsiders
(distance learners, suppliers, collaborative partners) who are politically or financially motived.
• Systems and communication (network, telecom) devices may fail.

Question 2 Feedback
AV ($200,000) x EF of 0.3% = $60,000
SLE ($60,000) x ARO (0.5) = $30,000
