Instructions
1. Try to determine whether the following statements are true or false, and then
justify your standpoints.
4. Please chceck the excel sheet to find out the questions which YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT in today’s
exam. Answer any ten questions.
Statements
1. A Dd6 transformer winding wound on a three limb core type transformer provides a very high
reluctance path to the unidirectional harmonics flux. [1.5]
2. During negative regulation the load current does not produce any type of demagnetizing action,
rather it magnetizes the core. [1.5]
3. During conduction of the laboratory experiment to corroborate the maximum efficiency occurrence
principle (e.g. core loss = cu loss), one must regulate the primary voltage to ensure constant
secondary voltages. [1.5]
4. In a star-zigzag connection the transformer bank net kVA utilization is below 50 percentage
of the gross installed kVA rating of the transformer. [1.5]
5. In case of a Scott connection, the current rating of the teaser winding is higher than the current
rating of the main winding. [1.5]
6. In case of open delta connection, since the transformers operate with different power factor;
therefore, the open delta represents an unbalanced transformer configuration, even when a
three phase balanced load is connected with the secondary. [1.5]
7. In case of the parallel operation, if transformers of different kVA rating but otherwise fulfilling
all the desirable qualities for the same are connected, then the transformer is having minimum
impedance will bear higher cu losses. [1.5]
8. If we connect a two winding transformer as an auto-transformer, the active power loss will be
minimized in this new configuration. [1.5]
9. A Dd0 transformer should not be connected in parallel with the Yy0 since the former provides
a path for the 3rd harmonic current circulation, while the later fails to provide the same. [1.5]
10. For a three phase supply line, a three limb core type transformer is good for delivering single
phase load. [1.5]
11. In a separately excited DC machine, an interpole winding and compensating winding is needed,
because the machine can not draw more field current to counterbalance the armature reaction. [1.5]
12. When a shunt DC generator is reconfigured as a shunt DC motor it offers better efficiency. [1.5]
13. If we change the DC generator linear dimensions keeping other parameters and quantities
constant, then the induced emf will vary with the generator dimensions (Assume linear lossless
magnetic circuit). [1.5]
14. The interpole of a DC machine is connected in parallel with the compensating winding, and
then the entire circuit is connected in series with the armature. [1.5]
15. In the case of the two three-phase transformer banks, Yz11 and Yd11 can be connected in
parallel. [1.5]
16. If core loss of a transformer increases, then the resistive component that represents the core
loss in the equivalent circuit must be reduced. [1.5]
17. A separately excited DC machine that is operating in the constant power motoring mode
will have a typical torque speed characteristics that can be approximated by a rectangular
hyperbola. [1.5]
18. Suppose a properly compensated differential drive dc motor was rotating in the clockwise
direction; now if the machine is allowed to operate as a generator in the same direction, then
the machine will start behaving like a cumulatively compound generator. [1.5]
19. The positive and negative sequence flux components of a Y-y ungrounded configuration, is
responsible for production of the oscillating neutral. [1.5]
20. If the supply condition varies in such a way that the voltage and frequency of an alternating
sinusoidal voltage remains constant (e.g. V/F const), then the core loss will vary directly with
a frequency dependent quantity F, where F is defined as F = (f 2 + f ) and f represents the
supply frequency. [1.5]

Answer any five from the questions given below. Please chceck the excel
sheet to find out the questions which YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT in today’s
exam.. Do note the following points:
1. Write the detailed solution in your copy (in your exercise book, diary, paper,
etc.
3. Don’t forget to mention the roll number on the top of each page; otherwise, the
answer script will not be considered.
4. Don’t forget to mention the question number; otherwise, the answer script will
not be considered.
5. Scan the entire answers from your copy using any suitable mechanism, and form
a pdf file.
7. In case of any ethical misconduct, the exam for that particular examinee will
be canceled and it will be brought to the notice of the concerned authority to
take further decision on the same.
Numerical Questions
1. A 5 kV, 25 Hz single phase transformer has copper, eddy current and hysteresis losses of 1.5,
0.5, and 0.6 percent of the full load. What will be the percentage losses if the transformer is
used on a 10 kV, 50 Hz system keeping the full load current constant. Compare the full load
efficiencies for the two cases. [3]
2. Three identical single-phase transformers are connected in the star on the primary side. The
line to neutral voltage, due to the fundamental component of flux Φ1 , is 200 V. It is found that
the third harmonics flux Φ3 and fifth harmonic flux Φ5 are 20% and 4% of Φ1 , respectively.
The primary to secondary turn ratio of each transformer is 1 : 4. If the secondary is connected
in delta, i) calculate (I) the voltage across the secondary open-circuited delta and ii) line to
line voltage when the secondary is delta connected. [3]
4. Plot the regulation of the transformer as a function of the Xl varying from 0.4 p.u. to 0.6 p.u.
Consider the approximate equivalent circuit.
[3]
5. Find out the current through the transformers and draw the phasor diagrams.
[3]
6. The transformer secondary in star supplies power to a purely resistive load, with one ammeter
and watt-meter as shown in the figure below. The reading on the ammeter and watt-meter
are 15 A and 750 W respectively. The primary side is connected with an infinite bus and the
secondary side line voltage waveform mimics the primary side line voltage waveform. Find the
value of R.

9. A DC series motor driving an electric train faces a constant power demanding load. It is
running at its rated speed and also the rated voltage is applied across its terminal. If it is
needed to regulate the speed by 75% (i.e. 25% is the required speed), then calculate the
required change in the supply voltage. [3]
