Darren: College Accommodation Bureau, Darren speaking, how may I help you?
Woman: Oh, good morning. l am starting at the college in September and I need to find some
accommodation.
Darren: Right, well, there are various options. The first one is to stay in college accommodation. (E)
That’d be a single room.
Woman: How much would that cost?
Darren: Well. It depends. For a standard room, you'll be looking at 3276 pounds for the year. That's
just for a room with washbasin. Or (Q1) 3834 pounds if you want an en-suite. That's with your
own small bathroom.
Woman: I see. That's more than I expected.
Darren: It doesn't include heating. That's quite a saving because energy costs can be high, especially
in winter.
Woman: Hum, does it include meals as well?
Darren: No. AII our rooms are self-catering now. There is shared kitchen on each corridor where you
can cook if you want to. Or there are plenty of places to eat out on campus.
Woman: OK. And you said that is the price for the whole year?
Darren: Well, you pay annually. But actually it's for 36 weeks. lt doesn't include (Q2) holidays. You
have to vacate the room then.
Woman: Oh, Hum. I need somewhere to stay in the holidays. I can't afford to go home. The flights are
too expensive.
Darren: Well, there is another option. Several families who are the workers at the college or have
children study in here offer visiting students a room in their homes.
Womam: Oh.
Darren: We call this arrangement (Q3) "Home Welcome". And we've still got a few places left at the
moment. You pay 150 pounds per week and that includes breakfast, a packed lunch and
dinner, as well as heating.
Woman: ls there a contract? Do you have to stay for the whole year?
Darren: No, it’s (Q4) flexible.
Woman: Hmm. It sounds really good, but I'm not sure. I really want to be a little more independent.
Womam: What about finding somewhere to live off campus?
Darren: Yes, you can rent a property in town privately. You might want to rent a room in a shared house.
You'd have a room of your own and shared kitchen and bathroom with other students.
Woman: What about if I don't want to share?
Darren: You can get what we call a (Q5) studio. They are often quite small but they'll have everything
you need.
Woman: Right. How much would those two options costs?
Darren: Well, prices vary depending on which part of the town the property is in. Generally speaking,
the cheapest is around 275 pounds a month for each student.
Woman: Oh, that's not too bad.
Darren: Yes, but it can also be as high as 490 pounds and then you have to pay all your other bills.
Woman: What sort of amount would I be looking at for those?
Darren: Well. Last year, students were paying on average about 43 pounds per month each for gas and

electricity. This year. It would probably be somewhere in the region of (Q6) 48 pounds.
Woman: That's a lot.
Darren: Yes, they're gone up quite a bit. And on top of that you have to pay for (Q7) water and that
would probably be around 9 pounds.
Woman: That didn't occur to me. And I guess I'd have to pay for (Q8) transportation, too.
Darren: That’s right. Most of these properties are quite a long way from the college.
Woman: Oh, that just gets worse and worse. What's the minimum contract on this type of
accommodation?
Darren: Six months. And you have to pay (Q9) a deposit. But of course, you can stay there over the
holidays.
Woman: That's true.
Darren: And you'd have to provide (Q10) references. They want two from someone in this country.
Woman: I see. That's not a problem.
Darren: lf you do choose this option, we can't find the property for you. You'd have to go through the
real estate agent which managers the property for the owner.
Woman: Right. Thanks. Well, l think I'd like to see what's available privately. Could you give me the real
estate agent details...

2 UNIT1/WORD LIST
Assistant: Oh, I've taken the class myself. The tutor is excellent. Last term it was held in a tennis club,
which is going to be redecorated soon, so we plan to change this class to a (Q5) golf club this
time. And it'll be held on the evening of every Wednesday.
Man: Do I have to bring the beads with me?
Assistant: Yes, that's the only material needed for this class.
Man: OK, I think this class i=s also a good choice for her. Um, do you have any other classes that I
can join?
Assistant: If you like, I think you can take our (Q6) Painting class. It's a popular class, so this term we're
going to move it to a high school so that we get more room.
Man: What time will it be?
Assistant: It'll be on every Monday evening.
Man: The time is good for me. Do I have to bring the paints?
Assistant: Well, paints will be provided by the tutor, I know that. Um, the information says you'll just need
some (Q7) brushes.
Man: I see.
Man: OK, just another question about the Beading class. I've just remembered my wife asked me to
find out the exact time-when will the first class begin?
Assistant: Well, the deadline for registration is April 30th,and we are not going to start the class until (Q8)
May 15th.
Man: OK. What's the fee for this class?
Assistant: It was 95 dollars last term, but the cost will be a little more this term. Well, let me check the
details. OK, it'll be 100 dollars this term, just 5 dollars more.
Man: Sounds reasonable. Then about the location. It's in the club, which room exactly?
Assistant: Room (Q9) J52.
Man: OK, just one more question. Is parking convenient?
Assistant: I'm sorry to tell you that parking space is only available for the club's premier members. But if
you drive, there's a parking lot opposite the club, just beside the (Q10) station. You need to
pay only a small parking fee.
Man: OK. That's all I want to know. I'll call you later after I discuss it with my wife. Thank you very
much.
Assistant: You're welcome. Bye!

UNIT1/WORD LIST 3
Agent: You’ll have to work every day and the payment is $9 per hour. However, the skills required are
not very basic so 3 days of (Q1) training is needed.
Student: The pay is quite good though I’m in my second year of study now and must attend some
courses during the daytime. So, I’m afraid I can’t make it for this one. Do you have any other
positions? You know, ones that I could spare more class-free time on.
Agent: That's not good then. Um...Let's see...here, there is one for security guards in the (Q2)
supermarket.
Student: What about the pay?
Agent: The salary is pretty standout for this one. It’s $25 per hour.
Student: Great! That's much higher than I would have expected. Are there any special qualities
required?
Agent: It sure offers quite a good salary. Um...There's almost no requirement for this job except that
you must wear a (Q3) uniform which is provided.
Student: That's very nice, then. But what about exact working hours for this? I hope it’ll be OK for me.
Agent: The working time is from9am to 5pm, and you only need to work 3 days each week.
Student: That sounds like fun but unfortunately, I’ve got other arrangements during the weekdays So
that's not possible either I’m afraid.
Agent: Mmm…well, I think we do have something else for you... Yes, here it is. There is a vacancy for
a van driving position in a (Q4) furniture company that might suit you.
Student: What is the working time for this one? On the weekends?
Agent: No, it’s (Q5) night work.
Student: That's good to hear cause I’m available for most of the late hours
Agent: And the good thing for this is that you’ve got (Q6) variable hours to choose from, though the
payment is fixed.
Student: Any other restrictions for this one ?
Agent: Yeah, it requires the driver to have (Q7) reliable driving skills, you know, in case of unnecessary
damage or any unwanted possibilities of accidents.
Student: Night work is perfect. But I don’t even have a driver's licence, not to mention my horrible driving
skills.
Agent: Hmm.no driver's licence…That makes it impossible at all then. All right. The last option that
might suit you is a job as a data entry clerk. You’ll be expected to work in a (Q8) school. It’s
actually a good place you know.
Student: Lovely! And what about the working hours? Not on weekdays I hope.
Agent: Actually, you’ll be working only on weekends. You get a fixed salary and you are expected to
be familiar with (Q9) keyboarding skills. That’s not the only limit though because I’m afraid
personal (Q10) transport is also a must.
Student: That's not a problem. I’ve got a bicycle to travel around with.
Agent: Great! Now, just fill out this form and well see what to do next.
Student: Wonderful!
