6 Work in pairs. Read the sample answer below to the Writing task and
answer the following questions.

The pie charts display different factors for undergraduates' and postgraduates'
choices to study at a certain university.

To start with, the reputation of the institution was the most important reason
for both graduates and postgraduates, with 35 percent and 42 percent of
respondents, respectively, saying this. In addition, the second most popular
consideration was cost, with 24 percent and 32 percent, respectively, giving
this as a reason.

Moving on to the lesser factors, it can be seen that for three times as
many undergraduate students as for postgraduate students, personal
recommendation was a higher priority – 18 percent as opposed to 6
percent. In addition, the availability of accommodation and location of the
university were similar for the two groups, both in single figures percentages.
Other reasons were given by a similar number of undergraduates as for
postgraduates – 8 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

In summary, reputation and cost were the most important factors for both
categories of students, with slightly higher numbers of postgraduates than
undergraduates giving these as reasons.

Strategies of making comparison 做比较的方法

You can use superlatives to express the largest proportion.

Similarity is also a form of contrast and can be used to indicate equal


importance.

The chart compares the attendance of Canadians of different ages at live


arts performances. There is clearly a strong relationship between age and
the sorts of events people attend.
