INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

MIDTERM – DEVED

QI. WHAT IS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT AND ITS PURPOSE?

Instructional Materials Development are implemented through support of the

development, revision, evaluation, and dissemination of materials and
assessments that guide instructional decisions and provide information on depth
of student learning of concepts and ideas. Instructional materials provide the core
information that students will experience, learn, and apply during a course. They
hold the power to either engage or demotivate students.

Instructional materials are resources with embedded information used to meet

specific course-based learning goals, outcomes and objectives. If a teacher uses
selected resources to teach their students during instruction and active learning,
it’s instructional material. This includes assessment and testing items that help
students retain information. Instructional materials are significant they help the
teacher and learners avoid overemphasis on recitation and rote learning that can
easily dominate a lesson. Resource materials allow learners to have practical
experiences which help them to develop skills and concepts and to work in a
variety of ways. The importance of IMs is to improve students' knowledge, abilities
and skills to monitor their assimilation of information, and to contribute to their
overall development and upbringing.

Q 2. WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL

DEVELOPMENT AND AS A DOCTORAND?

As a doctorand, Instructional materials are essential tools for us teachers in

learning aspect in every subject in the school curriculum. They allow the students
to interact with words, symbols and ideas in ways that develop their abilities in
reading, listening, solving, viewing, thinking, speaking, writing, using media and
technology. Instructional materials provide the core information that students will
experience, learn, and apply during a course. They hold the power to either engage
or demotivate students. Instructional materials are essential since they help the
teacher and learners avoid overemphasis on recitation and rote learning that can
easily dominate a lesson. Resource materials allow learners to have practical
experiences which help them to develop skills and concepts and to work in a
variety of ways.

Q3. HOW IMs SHOULD BE DEVELPED?

Instructional materials provide the basis for what learners will experience
and learn. They hold the power to either engage or demotivate learners. Therefore,
instructional materials must be carefully planned, selected, organized, refined,
and used.

The Instructional Materials Development (IMD) includes four components:

 Learning Progressions - supports the creation of instructional frameworks

centered on learning progressions in science and technology education and
the development of associated teacher resources and models for professional
development.
 Instructional Materials for Students - supports the creation and
substantial revision of comprehensive curricula and supplemental
instructional materials that are research-based; enhance classroom
instruction, preK-12; and reflect standards for science, mathematics, and
technology education developed by national professional organizations.
 Assessment - supports the creation of tools for assessing student learning
that are tied to nationally developed standards and reflect the most current
thinking on how students learn mathematics and science. Projects can also
focus on developing resources that provide technical assistance to schools
and districts in implementing new assessments.
 Applied Research - supports the research for development of the IMD
program and projects; provides evidence for the effectiveness of materials
and feedback for strengthening the portfolio; and identifies possible new
directions in instructional materials and assessment.

Q4. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS OF DEVELOPING INSTRUCTIONNAL

MATERIALS? EXPLAIN BRIEFLY.

Creating effective learning instructional material starts with instructional

design. It has become a concept that is equally popular in both the academic and
professional fields.
Here are the different ways you need to follow when designing instructional
learning material for your students.

Step 1:Conduct a needs analysis to identify the needs of your target audience as
well as training and business needs.

Step 2:Based on the analysis done on the learners, create a learner’s profile that
includes information on their roles, responsibilities, skills, educational and
professional experiences, technical knowledge, etc.

You should also assess their competency in the topic the training will be based on
and the training methods/ they prefer.

2
Step 3:Identify the learning objectives. These should be based on the outcomes
you expect to achieve at the end of the program.

Step 4:Course designing in itself is a process. Once you select the topics for the
course or the training program, decide on the instructional approach for it (i.e.
video or game-based approach).

Step 5:Organize the content and identify a flow using storyboards. You can use it
to plan content, images, icons, etc. that should be placed on different pages.

Step 6:You can create a prototype of your online course, training program before
you start developing it. This will allow you to test it for its effectiveness.

Step 7:Once you have developed and launched the program, monitor and assess it
to understand whether it is effective in accomplishing the learning objectives and
fulfilling the requirements of the learners as well as that of the organization.
