Q1 (10 marks)
A basketball player is standing on the floor 10.0 m from the basket as in Figure 1(a). The
height of the basket is 3.05 m, and he shoots the ball at a 40.0! angle with the horizontal from
a height of 2.00 m.

Blocks A, B, and C are placed as in Figure 2 and connected by ropes of negligible mass
passing over massless pulleys. Both A and B weigh 23.8 N each, and the coefficient of kinetic
friction between each block and the surface is 0.32. Block C descends with constant velocity.

Q3 (15 marks)
(a) Two blocks of masses $" and $# = 3$" are released from rest at a height of ℎ on a
frictionless track as shown in Figure 3(a). When they meet on the level portion of the
track, they undergo a head-on, elastic collision. Determine the maximum heights (in
terms of ℎ) to which $" and $# rise on the curved portion of the track after the collision.

(b) A particle is suspended from a post on top of a cart by a light string of length ( as
shown in Figure 3(bi). The cart and particle are initially moving to the right at constant
speed )$ , with the string vertical. The cart suddenly comes to rest when it runs into and
sticks to a bumper as shown in Figure 3(bii). The suspended particle swings through an
angle *. Show that the initial speed of the cart can be derived as

Q4 (15 marks)
(a) A force 5 = 30 N is applied at 20° to the tangent of a wheel of radius 20 cm. The
wheel is held in a fixed axle with 10 cm radius. The wheel has a mass of 3 kg and
can be treated as a uniform disk with a hole of 10 cm radius. There is no friction
between the wheel and axle and the wheel is initially at rest.

throughout its volume. A conducting spherical shell of inner radius b and outer radius c is
concentric with the solid sphere and carries a net charge -2Q. Using Gauss’s law or otherwise
