While reading the journal” Technical and Vocational Education for Social Transformation and

Justice” by Suresh Gautam, Tikaram Poudel and Prakash Kumar poudel , we can find many

fruitful knowledge based on technical and vocational education which are practiced in Nepal.

They have collected the various aspects of knowledge based on it. The role of Technical

Education and Vocational Training (TEVT) for the social transformation and social justice are

the main concern of this journal. From this journal we can able to understand the present status

of the TEVT and its work, effectiveness and reformative aspects.

We know that TEVT in developing countries like Nepal is playing vital role in the overall

development of the nation. Its main role is to provide training opportunities and career

advancement for the students who don’t want to continue the general education and it will help

to provide skill human resources needed at all levels of the national economy. It has always

emphasized the sustainable development.

Technical and vocational Education and Training (TVET) was started after the democratic

movement of 1951 in Nepal. Then, our government of Nepal started the process of formalizing

vocational skills integrating in formal education. It was formally initiated with the Fourth

National Plan in 1981. The expansion of TVET sector in Nepal was possible only after the

establishment of CTEVT in 1989. There are more than one thousand TVET institutions across

the country at present.

The main objective of the technical education is to empower the youths which basically focuses

on the poverty alleviation and sustainable development that helps to improve their living

conditions and social status. So, TVET in Nepal has been providing skills and knowledge to the

youths which is appropriate for the contemporary market needs and increasing employability. It

has been providing certified laborer and professionals for the economic growth of the nation. It

has emphasized to enhance skill based education, employability and job quality of the people and

it is based on mainly four major assumptions such as occupational intentions, occupational

curriculum, employment and schooling.

Although TVET has taken the objectives of providing skill oriented training to the youths of

Nepal. It is found that it is limited to the urban and city areas and has not reached at the corner of

the rural areas and the youth of the rural areas are deprived from getting skill and knowledge.

There is an enormous gap in distribution of wealth. The disadvantaged, women, marginalized

people and those who are out of the mainstream of the development are not getting the access to

join the TEVT sector. So they are backward in economic activities. It has shown that there is

social injustice in getting the facilities of TVET on the various aspects. They are still backward

to get the opportunities to increase skills, employability and income to maintain quality of life to

mitigate poverty.

The positive points of the journal are it is simple and easy to understand and has raised the

questions which should be implemented for the social transmission and the social justice. And

the reformative points are there is lacking of data related to the involvement in TEVT. If current

data were included, it would be better.

The role of TEVT should be balanced to all the youths of Nepal who want to get the technical

and vocational education. It should not be only limited in the urban areas and it should be
provided its services in the every corner of the nation. There shouldn’t be any discrimination and

should make the easy access to all.
