The philosophy of the nation that state that Nigerians should live in unity and
harmony as one indivisible, indissoluble democratic and sovereign nation founded
on the principles of freedom, quality and justice has not been able to be achieved. We live in a country where there is divergence ethnic groups. There is also different socio cultural beliefs, the Hausa’s did not see the Yoruba as their brothers and Igbo community did not see the Hausa’s as their brothers thereby causing sectionalism, nepotism, favouritism in governance. There is always killings in other tribes ,especially in the northern parts of Nigerian while we suppose to see ourselves as one Nigerian. Taking southern Kaduna as a case study where they kill the people that they believe that are not of their origin and the Christian Yoruba community living there. Tribalism is also one of the problems that cause disunity. The political office holders appoint citizens from their tribes in top political offices at the detriment of the federal character structure thereby causing disunity in Nigeria. In the area of justice delivery, the rich elites that committed grievous crimes and commit financial fraud are allowed to walk free without been prosecuted while the poor citizens at the grassroots that committed a minor offence are been put behind the bar. Another objective of education is provision of equal access to qualitative educational opportunities of all citizens at all level of education, within and outside the formal school system. This objective of education has not been able to be materialized in the sense that there is high level of illiteracy and out of school children in the northern parts of Nigeria. Education is very costly and most Nigerian citizens cannot afford it. Lack of competency teachers in government schools is a major setback in education advancement in Nigeria. There is inequality in accessing education, the rich top class member of the country send their oversees to receive quality education while the commoners are allowed to attend poorly funded schools in Nigeria. The objective of education in Nigeria that has not been achieved is qualitative education delivery. Most schools don’t have conducive environment for learning. Most classroom are dilapidated and in a bad state. The school libraries are not well equipped to global standard .The government contribute little towards the development of education in Nigeria. The Nigerian educational objective that states that there will be acquisition of functional skills and competence for self reliance has not been able to be achieved. Skills like textiles making, catering, craft, bakery carpentry that are supposed to be the bedrock for self employment and sustainability has been abandoned. Entrepreneur skills that are now been taught in schools is not adequately funded fir students .Take off grants and loans are not been provided. The government has done little in the area of skills acquisition and self reliance, that is why there is rural urban drift of youths for white collar jobs. Nigeria education system that is supposed to be oriented towards making every child to be taught in their mother’s tongue of language of their immediate society for the first four years of basic education and that every child shall learn one Nigerian language is not achievable. Nigerian private schools teach their pupils in non Standard English language instead of them to teach with their mother’s tongue to facilitate teaching learning process. This have adverse effects in the pupils communication as they cannot speak the standard English language fluently and they cannot also perform better in their mother’s tongue thereby leading to poor performance in English language and their studies generally. Nigerian education objectives is to provide shared responsibility for the common good of the society, but this objective has not come to stay. It is supposed to be a collective responsibility in the area of security of life and properties but it is not so. The herdsmen killing people are Nigerian, the cattle rustlers are Nigerian and most of these criminal live within the society. The people failed to fish them out and report them to the Nigerian police to arrest them and take drastic action against them. The education goal has not been able to cater for the needs of shared responsibility for the common good of the society. Educational activities that is supposed to be learner centered for maximum self development and self fulfillment is not so in the sense that teacher most times do the teaching in the classroom and thereby making the learner passive. This is a bad teaching model and it should be discourage in the teaching learning process. Another objective of Nigeria education is that all tiers of government shall promote the establishment and support of reading clubs in schools, communities, libraries and other such resources that will enhance learning. Reading culture is diminishing. Government fails to set up this clubs to enhance reading. A reading society is a developing society, as it is what people read that they will use to solve their problems. Inability of students to read has led to poor performance in waec and tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Nigerian libraries are occupied with outdated study materials that cannot match with the global standards. Teaching objectives was meant to be practical, activity based, experiental and IT supported. Nigerian schools lack modern laboratory equipment. There is no hands on experience in schools. The IT in few schools is only utilized by teachers. There is no much research in our schools laboratories. The government did not fund the schools in area of research and this has cause technological backwardness in Nigeria, Nigeria laboratories is not updated to the latest global laboratories. All these have adverse negative impact in our education system in Nigeria as the goals of education are swinging to the pendulum of destruction. The education objectives states that there will be special provision and incentives to the study of science at each level of education system but the reverse is the case. her is no adequate scholarship that supposed to boost the morale of the student that perform excellently in the science department in our schools. Scholars that perform brilliantly are not celebrated in Nigeria. Most science graduates are unemployed and this is one major reason that this educational objectives has not been able to be achieved. The objective of Nigeria education is that there should be periodic review, effectiveness and relevance of the curriculum at all levels to meet the needs of the society and the world of work but it has not been fully implemented because the last time it was reviewed was 2013.The education goal was suitable for Nigeria but it has not been implemented to the level that it will have significant impact on Nigeria economy at large. Most of the education policy is not in practice in Nigeria. The objectives was well drafted but it has solve societal needs of Nigerians. Nigeria philosophy of education that is based on instruments of national development and social change but the level of development in Nigeria is too low. In fact since 1960 Nigeria is still a developing countries, This mean that the philosophy is yet to be fully activated as expected.
