Perform in the Storm

Roll up your sleeves. This adventure you’re about to embark
upon…the learning adventure of homeopathy…is life changing
and may end up being your passion, as it is mine. It’s a life-long
study that will enhance your world and the world of those you
help. However, I warn you, it’s addicting! I’ve heard this repeatedly
from my students throughout the years. Why is it addicting?
Because homeopathy works! Once grasped, it becomes a way of
life. When applied correctly, it’s a powerful tool in a storm that
might otherwise have been a disaster.

What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy had its beginnings in 16th century Germany with
Samuel Hahnemann, a physician and scholar whose practice
included aristocracy and royalty. Disappointed in the results of
the medicine then being used by him and his colleagues,
Hahnemann left his prominent practice. He went on to discover a
profound natural law; the Law of Similars, which became the
foundation for homeopathy. The Law of Similars is the idea that
any substance that can cause symptoms when given to a healthy
person can help to heal those who are experiencing similar
symptoms when given in a very minute amount.

Hahnemann’s revolutionary thinking grew in acceptance in

Germany, France and England. American doctors turned to this
system of medical treatment in the 1840s. Soon, schools,
hospitals and private practices in homeopathy were established.
Throughout history, homeopathy gained favor with many
prominent people, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow, Louisa May Alcott, Daniel Webster and
John D. Rockefeller. There were more than 100 homeopathic
hospitals and 22 homeopathic medical schools in the United
States, while allopathic (conventional) institutions were increasing
at approximately the same rate.

Throughout the 1800s, both allopathic and homeopathic

physicians treated diseases such as small pox, typhoid,
diphtheria, tuberculosis and syphilis, as well as illnesses more
common today such as influenza, allergies and menstrual
disorders. At that time, the allopaths had nothing more than
purging and other primitive means to treat these diseases. The
homeopaths, however, had an arsenal of remedies as effective
today as they were then. In the 19th century, a fever of 105º was

given precisely the same homeopathic treatment as today. In fact,

most homeopaths prize their texts by the masters of infectious
diseases as a mainstay of their library. Nothing in homeopathy is
capricious. Indeed, every remedy has been used efficaciously for
more than two centuries.

A comparison of mortality rates in 1844 between homeopathic

and conventional patients throughout the United States and
Europe showed the rate of survival to be twice as high in
homeopathic patients as compared with those receiving
conventional medicine. Another study 56 years later in 1900
showed similar results and proved the efficacy of this timeless
method regarding life-threatening infectious diseases.
Furthermore, this study showed two to eight times the rate of
survival of patients of homeopaths compared to the rate of
survival of patients of allopaths. Many studies show homeopathy
to be the outstanding choice, but since the advent of antibiotics in
the mid 1900s, homeopath went out of favor. And so, here we
stand in the 21th century with sound information warning that
antibiotics carry dangerous repercussions, and viral infections
have no cure. What an opportunity for homeopathy to reenter the
American scene. It never left the medical system in England,
Germany, Italy, Greece, South America and India. Only in our
United States have we seen a decline in its use to the point of near
oblivion. This is changing and rapidly so.

Homeopathy and First Aid

I have no interest in underrating the first aid methods of old. The
Red Cross and other organizations employ physical methods that
are tried and true. My goal is to add to this body of information so
as to avoid the use of caustic and dangerous medications and
superfluous procedures. A melding of both schools is intelligent
and prudent, and you can learn this well enough to save a life or
remove suffering.

There’s no better way to treat the physical and emotional shock of

accidents and injuries than with homeopathy. Whether for a mild
injury or one that requires medical treatment, homeopathy can
absorb the shock, minimize and often remove bleeding, reduce
fear, anxiety and pain and put the sufferer in a better state in the
short term and in the long term. If the emergency room seems to
be the only way to care for the injury, give the best remedy every
half hour on the way to the hospital. This is reason enough to
keep a small emergency kit in your purse, diaper bag or brief case.
Even after a trip to the emergency room, a well-chosen
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 3
Notes

homeopathic remedy will often hasten recovery and reduce pain.

It will even calm the patient after the trauma resulting from the
emergency room experience! Pain medications can be omitted
with the correct usage of a remedy. Swelling and healing will be
hastened, often by one-half the time.

Homeopathy is safe, gentle, powerful and inexpensive. It never

interferes with conventional treatment whether surgery, testing or
medications. At this writing, most medical centers, MDs, nurses
and staff are confused by the term homeopathy and believe it to
be a term synonymous with holistic. In this confusion, it’s
believed the remedies are actually herbs or botanicals, hence there
is fear that they will interfere with their medical procedures. This
is a blatant ignorance of homeopathy.

Additionally, the remedies not only remove or minimize pain and

suffering, they do much more. They minimize shock to the
system, allowing the sufferer to find peace within the storm. You
may use this intelligent medicine with confidence and comfort. I
urge you to study these remedies so that you can handle any
situation that comes your way with aplomb.

Learn to Perform in the Storm

The more severe or acute the trauma, the faster the remedy works
and the more often it should be administered. For example, if a
bruise is severe, the remedy should be given every half hour or so;
if less severe, then every hour. If relief isn’t afforded to a good
degree, contact a professional homeopath, as homeopathy always
works, but sometimes the wrong remedy is used or a higher
potency is required.

The correct remedy will reduce swelling and in general encourage

healing in a remarkable amount of time.

How to Administer Homeopathic Remedies

Many homeopathic pharmacies make different sizes and density
of their pills. By the way, homeopathic pharmacies have been
regulated by the FDA since the 1940s, so homeopathic remedies
are not questionable or underground.

Using the dosage written on the outside of the bottle

(approximately half for a small child), pour the pills into the cap,
preferably without touching the pills, and pour the contents into
the sufferer’s mouth. If the person is unconscious, the pills will
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 4
Notes

melt if placed between the lip and gums. If

there’s vomiting, no need to worry, as the
ability of the remedy to work is not
dependent on getting it to the stomach.
Instead, just a small amount is needed for it
to take action in the mucosa of the mouth,
nose or any other orifice.

Remember, the more severe the injury, the

sooner the following dose should be
administered. All ages, including newborns,
the aged and even pets and wildlife, are
profited by these gentle pills.

When we’re faced with choosing the correct

remedy, it can be a daunting task. Often it is
difficult to differentiate between remedies.
Begin by becoming the eye of the storm
instead of a part of the fury around you.

I find the best way for me is to say a prayer. Mine is the psalm,
“Be still and know that I am God.” It gives me confidence when
someone I love is suffering to know that the hand of God is on
me. If you have enough time, keep a log of the symptoms you are
witnessing, for symptoms are our mirrors into what is happening
inside. We use them to determine which remedy is best. Note the
time and which remedy you administered. I guarantee, two days
later you’ll not remember what happened without good
recordkeeping. Include the date and the chief complaint. Begin by
assessing which area of the illness to concentrate on. Then,
choose the most prominent symptom.

Homeopathy for Animals

Homeopathy is equally useful for pets, livestock and wildlife and
has been the foundation of healthcare for farmers, breeders and
pet owners for centuries. The method for use with animals is the
same as for humans. Follow the chapter in this book that best
describes the pet’s ailment and proceed as you would for a
human. Adjust the number of pills to the size of the animal. For
example, a small bird would get 1 pill if 4 pills is the amount
recommended on the bottle, whereas a cow might receive 8 pills if
the recommended dose for a human was 4. Put the pills into the
animal’s mouth and gently hold the mouth closed until the pellets
dissolve. The ideal pellet for animals is the larger lactose tablet
because they melt so quickly. You can also dissolve the pellets in
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 5
Notes

pure water as described in the section on how to administer the

remedies.

Some animals will not allow a pellet in their mouths or are too
wild to get close enough to accomplish this. In this case, dissolve
the dose in approximately 4 oz. of water and drop it by
droppersful into the animal's mouth. If this is too difficult, then
leaving it dissolved in water for the animal to drink on its own is
an acceptable method. The water must be freshened daily, and the
animal must be isolated so that others don't take the remedy.

I have treated dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, cows, goats, llamas and
exotic birds, and the list is endless.

Treating pets is a wonderful opportunity for children to begin

their study of homeopathy. When you witness the remarkable
power of homeopathy on an animal, it puts to rest the suspicion
that it works on the placebo principle or that it requires a belief in
homeopathy for it to work.

The Care and Handling of Your Homeopathic

Remedies
Homeopathic remedies have a stale date written on them as a
requirement by the FDA. However, if they are handled properly
(see section on administering remedies), they will last indefinitely.
Remedies made 20 years ago are just as efficacious as those made
today!

The car is a convenient place to keep a kit; however, it’s better not
to make this a practice in the hot summer months. High heat (as
found in a closed car left in the hot summer sun) can antidote
your kit. Antidoting a remedy means that it renders it useless. If
you believe your remedy has been antidoted, label it and try it
again, but purchase another bottle to save yourself the trouble of
guessing the next time it’s needed.

Keep your remedies away from electromagnetic fields, as the

remedies are made from energy and can be antidoted by other
energy fields. This means storing them away from microwaves,
computers, VCRs, etc. Remedies are also antidoted by strong
odors, so if you have essential oils, store them away from the
remedies. A convenient storage area is a linen closet…far from
antidoting substances and close at hand when there’s a call for
aid in the middle of the night.

Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 6

Notes

The worst offenders of antidoting are the following essential oils:

mint, camphor, eucalyptus, tiger balm and tea tree oil.

These substances will antidote not only a bottle of a remedy, but

also the action of the remedy after it is taken. So take care not to
use them after ingestion of your remedy.

Let’s Get Started

I’ve included information on this CD to encourage you to take
charge of your healthcare. In doing so, there are certain
limitations in using a CD because, of course, I don’t know you
personally. Much of the work discussed will get you started, and I
encourage you to study further than this CD will allow. The
potencies 30c or 30x that I recommend are not the only ones
available. In other words, higher potencies, such as 200c or 200x
and 1M and higher, are also available, but I don’t recommend that
they be used by someone not educated in homeopathic treatment.
This is why I suggest you contact your homeopath if it seems the
results are less than satisfactory. Homeopathy will always be
beneficial; however, sometimes it requires higher potency or a
qualified practitioner.

Materia Medica for First Aid

Arnica montana
(Arnica)

Arnica montana is the ultimate

first aid remedy so we begin our
discussion with this powerhouse. It
is generally the first remedy
learned in the Materia Medica
because of its universal use in
emergencies as a result of trauma.
It’s the first remedy to think of for
hemorrhaging and bleeding to soft
tissue injuries, such as bruises,
contusions and sprains. However,
it is powerful in relation to injuries to the head as well. Ah…well
being and a cure. This is homepathy’s well-earned reputation.

Concussions and even broken bones can be minimized greatly

with this important remedy. It’s important in gun shot wounds,
injuries from impaled objects anywhere in the body, tooth
extractions; even the pain from dental braces can be eliminated.
Arnica can be used when there is apparent death as a last ditch
effort in serious situations, without fear of doing any harm. This
remedy, made from a little flower that grows in the Alps and
other mountain ranges, is know for its ability to heal and relieve
trauma to soft tissues of the body. Bruises, contusions, sprains
and bone injuries, particularly to the head, are also benefitted by
it. Arnica is unbeatable for hemorrhaging or bleeding due to
trauma to soft tissue.

Sometimes the patient doesn’t want to be touched or consoled

and is extremely sensitive to pain. Arnica is useful when the
trauma is fresh and even long after, when it can still reduce the
internal shock and consequential damage. This remedy should be
kept in every household travel organizer, and purse. Arnica is
considered an analgesic after trauma yet that is selling it too
short. It will absorb the pooling of blood and swellings and aid in
the cure of traumas in general.

It is particularly useful as an aid to postoperative recovery. As I

said earlier, this includes tooth extraction. The best way to use it
is by taking a dose every 6 hours for up to 3 doses before the time

Notes

of surgery, immediately following the procedure, and hourly as

needed for pain. This can be alternated with Hypericum, for
example, Arnica on the hour and Hypericum on the half hour. If
this doesn’t improve the symptoms greatly, contact your
homeopath.

When a bed feels “too hard” even long after an injury, think of
Arnica. It is an excellent sports remedy both for injuries such as
broken bones as well as those due to overuse. Even arthritis flare-
ups can be relieved by a few doses of Arnica. Arnica will also
address a goose-egg injury to the head by reducing the size,
soothing the pain and calming the sufferer. Sold as a cream, it can
be applied externally and is useful but not nearly as effective as
taking it orally. Any residual pathology as a result of an injury can
often be addressed by Arnica montana, such as dizziness or even
loss of sight from a head injury!

The whole body can be oversensitive. Sometimes the bed, seat,

etc., feels too hard. The person who needs Arnica may seem
restless or afraid of being touched. Sometimes he might say he is
all right when indeed he’s not and may be disturbed by someone
consoling him. Also, remember Arnica for:

Blunt trauma to the eye

Post surgical trauma (all surgery is trauma)
Stroke
Lacerations
Internal bleeding
Injuries from mammograms, even if there is no residual
pain
Any tissue damage except burns

A little tip: If Arnica proves to be insufficient, consider Ledum.

They often can be confused.

Aconitum nepallus
(Aconite)

This is the remedy of choice for shock of any kind. Ninety percent
of all shock issues will be benefited by this miraculous remedy.
So, Aconite is a salve, in fact a cure, for fears that have a panic
state to them. This includes fear of death, darkness or a sense of
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 9
Notes

impending doom. Any of these emotions can be aroused when

someone is made very sick in a short period of time, such as in an
accident.

I like to use the term Quick Shock to characterize Aconite.

When a loved one’s symptoms come on quickly, with gusto, and

there’s intensity to the symptoms, Aconite is the best-matched
remedy. It’s useful for high fevers that come on within minutes,
hours or within 24 hours. This might include the shock from an
injury (especially to the eye), the shock of surgery, even the shock
of exposure from a cold wind. Even for someone who has
witnessed a severe accident or a catastrophe. I received many calls
after 911 from clients in New York City who were aided by using
Aconite for several weeks. It restored their calm in the storm, so
they were more useful citizens, rather than panicked ones. One of
my clients was a firefighter who had many friends who died on
that day. He was left in a state of shock that disabled him for days
until Aconite was administered. It restored him to duty and a
desire to work again.

Some characteristics of
Aconite are anxiety with
fear of death, a red face
and restlessness. There
may be fear of
earthquakes, airplanes, of
being in a crowd, frank
claustrophobia and of
heart failure. Restlessness
often causes insomnia
and a feeling of
quickened heart beat.

Use it for the beginning

of infectious diseases,
fevers and agitation.
Symptoms that are associated with colds and flues of sudden
onset, laryngitis, and minor and extreme anxiety are achieved by
Aconitum.

Any anxiety or fear following an accident or frightening incident

is cause for the use of Aconite. Sometimes there’s a bitter taste in
the mouth with a flushed, sweaty face and one cheek red while
the other is white. Vertigo or fainting may be present or the fear
of either one. Nervousness accompanying a cold is a good
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 10
Notes

indicator of Aconitum. Also: panic, anxiety, fear of death or

certainty that they will die and even apparent death, as well as
exposure to extreme cold. Carbon monoxide poisoning can also be
treated with Aconite.

Aconite is used for eye injuries and is

sometimes called the Arnica of the eye.
It is also used for convulsions (not
from a chronic disease such as
epilepsy) after an accident or after
receiving bad news, as well as flues
and colds that come on suddenly,
especially after a cold wind.

Aconite can abort pneumonia if given

within the first 24-48 hours from the
first show of symptoms. As you can
see, the common theme running
through Aconite is sudden and shocking.

A young woman came to me years ago who had been assaulted by

two hoodlums. The incident had occurred months before her
arrival in my office. She had been experiencing panic attacks ever
since the event and was unable to sleep or concentrate. A few
days worth of Aconite put her sleep in order, while a repeat of the
same two weeks later eliminated the panic attacks. I have many
such cases but am constrained by the size of this CD.

Bryonia
The easiest way to remember Bryonia is that it is always made
worse by motion. For the purpose of memorization, “wild
hopping” (the plant from which it is made) would cause an
aggravation. So would other movements such as eye movement
during a headache, when breathing deeply brings on coughing and
even eating or a slight change from one position to another can
create a need for Bryonia. The need to lie perfectly still regardless
of the cause or suffering is reason enough to consider Bryonia.
The need to remain perfectly still carries into the need to be left
alone. Bryonia people resent being questioned or engaged and can
become irritable and sad. In children, we find a similar need but
it’s not as pronounced as in an adult.

Headaches, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory problems,

muscular pains and even broken limbs are all covered by the
remedy. Often firm but gentle pressure is relieving. You’ll find
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 11
Notes

them with their back pressed up against the back of the couch to
support and comfort muscular pain. A sprained limb is
comforted by a firm sling and a headache with the pressure of
loving hands.

Often the person appears dull and feels the need to go home,
even if they’re already home. This is an excellent remedy for
homesickness where headaches or stomach aches ensue.

Because eating is a motion of the mouth and internal organs, the

Bryonia sufferer is often worse after eating. Thirst is often
present and the desire is for cold drinks. Oddly enough, Bryonia
doesn’t like heat, such as a warm room, the sun and the summer
time, but warm drinks ameliorate. This may make the symptoms
worse or bring on a bout of dizziness. Coolness is appreciated via
cold applications or cold air.

Ledum
For the sake of memory, Ledum is the “B” remedy. It’s for
Bruising, Bleeding, Bites, Bee stings and Puncture wounds (sorry
about the “P”). Symptoms are often better from cold or ice packs.
This is an outstanding symptom because the person is often cold,
and it’s an unusual combination to find craving cold while
experiencing cold. But in homeopathy, we’re always on the look
out for “strange, rare and peculiar symptoms” that will help us
distinguish one remedy picture from another. This is one of them.
Injuries from sharp, pointed objects such as needles, awls, nails
and insect bites. The bite of cats and rats provide a special field of
utility for this remedy. Begin dosing immediately and call a
professional homeopath if the injury is deep enough.

Ledum is the premiere remedy for puncture wounds. This can be

taken to mean a puncture from even a source as small as an
insect. Bee stings are treated well with Ledum as long as the
symptomology agrees. The symptomology includes much swelling
and inflammation, and the patient is cold or the site of the injury
is experienced as cold. One of the keynotes of this remedy is that
the patient often feels better from the cold or a cold application
despite feeling cold in general. If in doubt as to its need, try
applying an ice pack or cold cloth or submerge in cold or cool
water. If comfort ensures, Ledum will likely cure. Wounds are also
benefited by the use of Ledum, especially those near nerve-rich
areas or in areas where much bruising ensues.

Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 12

Notes

Animal bites, such as cat, dog, rat, etc., are aided by Ledum. I had
a case of a woman who was trying to help her cat, who had an
infected tooth, get to the vet. The cat bit her on the arm. Within
24 hours, the arm was nearly double in size, and a fever had
ensued. We began treatment with Ledum every half hour, while
the wound was attended to with Calendula. Within 12 hours, her
temperature was returned to normal, and the wound, although
nasty-looking, grew less painful. This was followed by a few
changes in remedy choices (Arsenicum and Arnica) and then
followed up by Ledum again. Within days, the woman was back on
her feet and doing her chores, ever so grateful that antibiotics
were unnecessary, as she had an allergy to them.

Ledum can help sprains, especially of the lower limbs where there
is marked bruising. Ledum addresses swelling of an inflamed
ankle or foot, particularly if there’s an interest in or amelioration
from cold bathing or cold application. If you have a family of
active children, this remedy is a must in your first aid kit. Take it
on camping trips, picnics and sports events. The sooner given, the
more valuable, especially when treating puncture wounds.

“If given immediately after puncture wounds, it prevents tetanus,”

says Dr. Boericke in his acclaimed book, Concordant of Materia
Medica. I’ve had personal experience with this remedy in people
who have not had a tetanus vaccine or had it 20-30 years ago and
found it to be effective each time.

Use this remedy for thorn punctures, hematomas and nail

punctures, even mosquito bites that become pathological. A
pathological wound is one that is showing disease formation or
extraordinary pain, swelling or discomfort. Don't wait for this to
occur when the wound is from a nail, even a rusty one, or thorn.
Treat immediately.

Sometimes Ledum patients can be irritable, cross or angry after an

injury. Watch for this, as we’ll find this emotional reaction in Nux
vomica, too, but with concomitant symptoms that differ. We’ll be
discussing Nux vomica later.

Other uses for Ledum include:

Insect wounds; if administered immediately, Lyme’s disease

from a tick bite can often be averted
Insect stings, especially when there’s a great deal of
swelling (local or otherwise) and inflammation
Contusions that are close to the bone

Notes

Bites of any animal, given hourly

Black eye or any orbital injury
Purple discoloration and swellings from an injury
Hemorrhages, bruises
Puncture wounds from stepping on a nail
Cellulitis with inflamed lymph nodes

I, personally, had an accident years ago that was a poignant

example of this. I was holding half of an avocado in the palm of
my hand and foolishly stabbed at the pit with a sharp knife and
missed, driving the knife into the palm of my hand. There was
little bleeding and not much pain, so I washed the hand and
ignored it. Several hours later, I awoke in the middle of the night
with severe pain, redness around the wound, a red line traveling
up my arm and an enlarged and painful auxiliary lymph node. I
was frightened and worried. I began taking Ledum at hourly
intervals, and after three doses, I fell asleep. Upon waking in the
morning, the lymph node was reduced to normal and the line was
gone, as was the pain and swelling of the wound. Most
miraculously, the wound had no pain at all, even as I pressed
firmly on it. My demeanor was restored to calm, too! Do you know
any medicine that can do all that within six hours and that costs
no more than $10 per bottle and has no side effects? Homeopathy
is truly miraculous.

So remember Ledum for wounds

to and around nerves, sprains,
especially in the lower limbs, and
injuries anywhere.

Hypericum
Hypericum is closely related to
and follows well after Ledum.

This remedy is made from the

herb St. John’s wort. It is valuable
in the material form as an herb as
well as in the homeopathic form;
however, it has a more profound effect when potentized
homeopathically.

Hypericum is used for injuries to nerve-rich areas such as toes,

fingers, tongue, teeth, genitalia and eyes, and for injuries to the
spine, even tailbone injuries due to a fall or blow or from labor.
The pain from injury to the coccyx often has a bruised sensation

Notes

from the nerves around the bone. Hypericum will relieve the
symptoms within hours or a few days. How many women would
welcome this relief after birth so they can attend to their children
with ease and comfort.

Bruising pains are common, but sometimes the pains are sharp
and shooting and feel as though they’re traveling along a nerve.
What about severe pains that accompany an amputation? The pain
in a nerve-rich area, such as the severed area of a limb, whether at
the time of the accident or months or years later, can be
excruciating. Homeopathic doctors were common during the Civil
War, and there are oodles of accounts of cures in the hospitals set
up around the camps. Homeopathic hospitals in the United States
and England used Hypericum regularly. It will cure the pains
better than an analgesic and even morphine when used in a high
enough potency. A higher potency remains in the hands of an
experienced homeopath, but I can tell you from personal
experience that it works. And a most comforting aside is that it
isn’t addicting, nor does it carry side effects, and it is inexpensive.

Remember Hypericum for lacerations. Give several doses of

Hypericum first and then get under way to the emergency room
while continually dosing with Hypericum. In a few cases, students
and clients have reported to me that they’ve turned the car
around in the parking lot of the hospital and returned home, their
loved one fast asleep in the back seat. Sleep is an indication that
the remedy is doing its job. If upon awakening, the pain or fear,
etc., returns, begin dosing again. Utilize this method for all
injuries.

Hypericum is the first remedy we think of for dental procedures,

especially tooth extractions. If taken in alteration with Arnica, it is
the quintessential combination for the relief of pain around any
surgical procedure, especially tooth extraction. It will not only
remove the pain and aching but will keep dry sockets from
occurring and leave the patient in a better state emotionally.

Think of it also for:

Tears and lacerations

Puncture wounds
Swollen, bruised areas and a desire for ice packs
Any injury, particularly to nerve-rich areas such as fingers,
toes, nose and genitalia. Crushing injuries are particularly
aided by Hypericum.

Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 15

Notes

If after an injury, a painful scar remains, consider taking a few

doses or so of Hypericum to end the discomfort.

When Hypericum is used in tincture form, it can also be beneficial,

and it can even be used in conjunction with its homeopathic
counterpart.

Nux vomica
This is an easy remedy to remember because of its unique name
that alludes to its pathology. As we can guess, Nux vomica is a
powerful remedy for gastrointestinal issues. There may be
indigestion, colic, constipation, gas, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
and intolerance of certain foods. Yet these may not be the only
symptoms. Any cluster of symptoms may accompany
gastrointestinal problems and still require Nux vomica. A sore
throat and fever accompanied by vomiting is a good example.

The same holds true for the Nux vomica mental state. The Nux
vomica person is often irritable, fussy and fastidious. He is often
critical, snappish and has an oversensitive nervous system that is
acutely aware of his surroundings. Noise, odors and lights are
bothersome and may bring about symptoms. A good way to
remember this remedy is to think of someone who is “over the
top.” This can mean overanxious or excited but can also come
about from over-eating the wrong foods or excesses in alcohol or
medications. The more over-taxed his system, the more he
depends on his props, i.e., coffee, chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes,
medications.

As one can imagine, it’s difficult for Nux vomica to sleep from this
stimulation. Inability to fall asleep from an overactive mind, upset
stomach or headache, and every noise is noticed and resented.
Awakening in the middle of the night, especially with digestive
distress, can be an indication for the use of Nux vomica. It has
won a stellar reputation for quickly removing and curing the ill
effects of a hangover or even just the sensation of a hangover
after a tough night. It's a powerful remedy for night watching (the
lack of sleep resulting from caring for another). It is a remedy to
remember for long nights as a mother to a sick family.

People who need Nux vomica crave fats, spicy, strong-flavored

foods and stimulants. Other symptoms are chills and general
coldness that is inspired by cold dry weather, anger and mental
exertion. It is an excellent remedy for children the day after a
birthday party and for New Year’s Day when symptoms appear

Notes

from overindulgence. Sensitivity to chemicals is also aided by Nux

vomica.

One of the most commonly prescribed remedies, Nux vomica is a

powerhouse for situations of a poisonous nature. This can occur
if the “poison” is a food, such as chocolate, alcohol or even
overdoing unaccustomed foods. Hence, it is useful for tummy
aches after Halloween, Easter or New Year’s Eve. Yet, it’s also
indicated for true food poisoning such as botulism, drug
overdose, from over-the-counter, prescription and street drugs,
pesticide exposure, too much coffee and, believe it or not, after
being struck by lightning.

Night watching a loved one can lead to a state in need of Nux

vomica. This can also include collapse and fatigue states from
overwork, and travel sickness can be easily overcome by a few
doses of Nux vomica.

Just as an Aside – Kitchen Remedies for

Gastrointestinal Disorders
Gastrointestinal disorders can sometimes be relieved by simple
kitchen cupboard methods. Indigestion, for example, can be
quickly eliminated with a teaspoon or more of baking soda in 4
ounces of water to which the juice of 1/2 lemon is added. Often
raw vinegar can be the catalyst for relief when a splash of it is
added to 4 ounces of water. Whole-milk, plain real yogurt can be
soothing to the stomach and aids in digestion while building
intestinal flora. Raw milk is also a godsend if you’re fortunate to
live near a farm or own a cow. You might also try a pinch of Celtic
salt in a glass of warm water. Celtic salt is salt that hasn’t been
processed like conventional table salt and is found in most health
food and gourmet stores.

Calendula
Keynote: Repairs Skin

Calendula is used as a
tincture for use on wounds,
cuts, abrasions and burns. A
tincture means the medicine
is made in alcohol instead of
pillules. When in this form,
use the ratio of 1:4. That is,
use one drop Calendula to 4
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 17
Notes

drops pure water for wound management. Distilled, filtered or

spring water are all good for this use.

Calendula is an antiseptic that will also control bleeding and

soothe pain. Calendula is useful for skin conditions such as
psoriasis, eczema and other problems that might otherwise be
controlled by cortisone. Calendula can cure many skin ailments or
at least soothe them until a more specific remedy can be found. It
is also useful for the wound after a tooth extraction. When the
wound is reasonably clean, use Calendula as a rinse and then add
it to the dressing. This method was used in the Civil War by a
number of surgeons.

Calendula officinalis grows readily, and I urge everyone to grow it.

Every year, I plant a plot of the seeds in the finest soil in my
garden. In autumn, the varied golden flowers are a welcome sight.
I gather their nearly fully opened buds and then dry them for later
used as a tincture or salve. Calendula heals cracks in fingers and
chapped hands and lips. I make a lip balm from Calendula every
year for each member of my family to carry in winter jackets. In a
pinch, fresh flowers can be directly applied to wounds and insect
bites and covered with a bandage.

Rhus toxicondendron
(Poison Ivy)

Keynote: Rusty Gate

The hallmark of Rhus tox is

amelioration from movement. This
can be related to skin, muscles and
joints as well as disposition. Rest
causes discomfort, and pain is
augmented upon first movement, but
as motion continues so does
improvement. Restlessness prevails
mentally and physically. Sleep is
often difficult because of a restless
mind and/or restless legs and feet.
This may begin in the evening and
continue throughout the night when anxiety, fear and depression
plague the sufferer. Weeping comes easily and often without
cause.

Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 18

Notes

Muscle and joint pain from the flu or from an injury is

distinguished by the “rusty gate” idea of worse when still,
creaking on first movement and better on continued movement.
When overexertion from gardening or working out results in
stiffness, Rhus tox can be valuable, as well as when waking with a
stiff neck. It’s the best remedy I can think of for ruptured
ligaments and tendon injuries. Sprained ankles, wrists and other
sports injuries are all benefited by Rhus tox. After an initial course
of Arnica to treat the initial shock and pain, Rhus tox is the
secondary remedy. Sometimes, we then go to Ledum, depending
on the character of the pain. This procedure is usually over the
course of a week or so. But when all is tolled, these three remedies
will cut the healing time by half and will often eliminate the pain
altogether.

Achiness, soreness and stiffness relieved by firm pressure and

heat such as a hot bath or lying flat on the floor are Rhus tox
indicators. Cold applications or exposure can often bring on the
pains. I find that this often occurs months after an injury when
arthritic or neuralgic pains creep in. This is an opportunity to use
Rhus tox.

Heat, often near scalding, can relieve pains as well as the intense
itching that Rhus tox addresses. This is found in illnesses such as
chicken pox, poison ivy and herpes. Where there are blisters, they
secrete water-filled pus, are quite inflamed and red and itch
terribly.

Oscillococcinum
Keynote: Colds, flu

Oscillococcinum is a fairly new remedy that is very useful for colds

and flu. Sometimes it is called Flu Solution for obvious reasons.
Its action is available only during the onset and within the first
day or so of contracting the flu. Use it when there is fever, chills,
pain and body aches. This remedy is not found in homeopathy
kits but is available in bubble packs in natural food and grocery
stores. Follow the directions given on the package. It’s a great
place to start when colds and flu strike your home.
Oscillococcinum is one of the fastest growing remedies. In France,
it is the leading over-the-counter medication. In this country, it
has recently gained the attention of the conventional medical
practitioners. Make this powerful and safe remedy a part of your
household kit.

Notes

Mag phos
The hallmark of Mag phos is neuralgia that is ameliorated by heat
and pressure. Amelioration means made better by or comforted
by. This is important information. Any time we find this
combination we must consider Mag phos. This applies to
headaches, menstrual cramps, colic, leg cramps, writer’s cramps
and sciatica. Cold air, cold applications and cold drafts may cause
or make the pains worse.

Mag phos is often more effective when a dose of it is dissolved in

4 ounces of drinkably hot water and then sipped. Allow the pills
to dissolve; then each sip represents one dose. The dilution
should be somewhat warm as the last sip is drunk. As always in
acute prescribing, stop once relief is obtained.

Menstrual cramps are often associated with pains that are

comforted by pressure (doubling over) and with heat (the use of a
hot water bottle). Sometimes rubbing the affected area is also
craved. Often a few doses of Mag phos given during painful
periods is all that's needed to not only bring relief temporarily but
often minimize the pain in forthcoming menstual periods.
Sometimes the pain is more prevalent on the right. The Mag phos
sufferer is often irritable and over-sensitive to outside
stimulation.

Toothaches, migraines and colic are relieved by Mag phos as long

as the symptoms match.

Ignatia
Ignatia is the premier remedy for grief. Named after St. Ignatius, it
acts on the central nervous system. After witnessing a shocking
event such as a catastrophe, the first remedy to administer is
Aconite; however, if grief remains that is hysterical in nature,
Ignatia is your remedy. Hysteria, such as deep, gut-wrenching
sobbing or laughing alternating with crying, and even deep
depression after or during grief will be soothed by Ignatia. Grief
is, of course, a natural means of processing a loss; however,
remedies don’t drug or cover up like conventional drugs, only to
come out later in a more severe state; instead, they gently nudge
the person’s natural ability to heal himself. So, the use of Ignatia
for grief is a gentle stimulus in overcoming the sufferings of grief
and loss.

Notes

Central nervous system reactions such as parethesia, paralysis,

numbness and twitching after grief, even old grief, are an
opportunity to use this soothing, curative remedy. Sometimes the
sufferer has tears right behind the eyes that look as though the
flood gates could open at any moment. The chronic holding back
of tears can sometimes be an indication of the need for Ignatia,
particularly if there is twitching or another concomitant central
nervous reaction. The loss of a function of part of the body is
another common reaction, such as MS-type symptoms. Think of
the applications!

After witnessing our dog being hit by a truck and her subsequent
death, I found myself unable to sleep while the image turned over
and over in my thoughts, and I found it difficult to concentrate. A
few doses of Ignatia put me in order so that my central nervous
system could be restored. I’m sure you’ll find comfort during such
times with this precious remedy, too.

Cantharis
Keynote: Burning

Cantharis is a powerful remedy for burns. Whether the burn is

from steam, exposure to the sun or chemicals, electrical or direct
exposure to radiation, Cantharis can speed recovery, minimize the
chance of infection and reduce the pain and swelling. It can be
used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. If the
burn is serious, get medical help immediately and give Cantharis
as soon as possible. It is particularly useful for disorders
involving mucous membranes, especially the urinary tract. It
functions well in the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems as
well. Burning pains are necessary for Cantharis to be considered.
The violence and rapidity with which Cantharis progresses have a
corresponding mental version. Often the patient acts in a very
angry, even violent, way.

The burns that require Cantharis may not come from external
sources; they may come from an inflamed tissue or organ
reaction. Diarrhea accompanied by burning rectal pain, a burning
sensation in the stomach, and burning pain associated with
urination are all examples of internal inflammations calling for its
use.

In a first-degree burn, start with Aconite every 15 minutes for

shock and pain. Stop after 6 doses. Cantharis can be given 4x each
day for one day for the burn itself and may be used alternately
Copyright 2014 Joette Calabrese, LLC www.joettecalabrese.com Page 21
Notes

with Aconite. In other words, on the hour give Aconite, on the half
hour, give Cantharis. If the pain is not subdued, contact your
homeopath. For second-degree and third-degree burns, follow the
protocol above and contact your homeopath. Under these
conditions, conventional medicine will be sought, and the
remedies can still be utilized. Hypericum 30 can also be of value
to subdue the pain and keep infection from ensuing. Dilute a dose
of Hypericum 30 in 3-4 ozs. of preferably distilled water and drip
it onto the burn or coat the sterile dressing with it.

Arsenicum album
Arsenicum is the premier poison remedy. It will effectively end
vomiting and nausea as a result of food poisoning and restore
quietude to a storm of nausea and vomiting.

It will also abort a bout of overreaction to insect bites that cause a

reaction or even an allergic reaction to lawn pesticides and
allergic reaction to foods. Never travel to a third-world country
without Arsenicum in your pocket. Montezuma’s revenge is a
thing of the past with this safe, powerful remedy.

The need for Arsenicum often comes on at night, especially

around or after midnight. The patient who needs Arsenicum has a
worried, fearful appearance and doesn’t want to be left alone.
There is anxiety about themselves or a member of their family
and sometimes a fear of death. A craving for drinks, especially
cold drinks, is present, yet instead of taking long drinks, the
sufferer sips. There is a restlessness often accompanied by
exhaustion and weakness that seems disproportionate to the
malady. This restlessness keeps the patient in constant motion,
which may manifest in one body part only, such as wiggly feet. It
will completely wear out the driven patient who until that time
will often pace the room with anxiety, fear, pains and/or nausea.

Sleeplessness is common in this remedy as a result of restless

anxiety and fear or from the physical symptoms such as vomiting
or coughing. Dreams may be frightening. Arsenicum is a useful
remedy for panic attacks unrelated to a particular stimulus. The
need for Arsenicum can also come from wet weather, cold
dampness, cold drinks or cold food.

The patient needs to be away from odors such as food or the sight
of it. Arsenicum will cure diarrhea that is watery, acrid and very

Notes

odorous. The stomach feels raw and inflamed, and often there is
loud belching.

Chills and general coldness is apparent, and warmth ameliorates,

yet the pains are burning in character. There may be burning of
the stomach, throat, rectum and eyes. Discharges from the nose
or any area of the body can excoriate the surrounding areas.

Arsenicum is one of our best defenses against colds and the flu,
particularly when burning pains are made better with heat.

A Nutritional Note
The need for calcium in trauma is well recognized, not only
because calcium is a natural pain reliever but because it is a
nervine. After a trauma, the patient can be left with depleted
reserves on a nutritional level. I’m not a proponent of taking
vitamins, as they can often cause more trouble in the long run
because not all the components of the vitamin are included in the
pills. They are usually fragmented, just like foods of commerce.
Instead, I suggest as soon as the patient is able, start him on
nutrient-rich stocks made from bones. These stocks are easily
made at home. They’re the basis of the most delicious, nutritious
soups of European epicureans. Don’t take my word for it; go to
any five-star restaurant in the world.

This is the method of real soup. Simply roast your chicken,

venison, beef etc., and serve the meat as usual, reserving the
bones, cartilage and inedibles, and place them back in the
roasting pan. Fill the pan with enough water to cover the bones,
add one-half cup or less of vinegar to the pot and allow it to
simmer slowly for 1-2 days. Yes, two days is how we ensure that
the stock becomes infused with nutrient-dense gelatin. The
vinegar will draw out the minerals, especially calcium, and render
its usefulness in the stock. This should be drunk liberally after a
traumatic accident. If this isn’t possible, instead, you may add
plain gelatin to any hot beverage and stir until dissolved. It will
have a similar ability to soothe, nourish and keep infection at bay.

Preparing for Emergencies with Homeopathic

Remedies
Should services be cut off due to storms or disasters or you're
simply in need at 2:00 am, it makes good sense and is comforting
to know you’re prepared.

The best preparation for an emergency is to own a homeopathy

kit with as many remedies as you can afford. (I carry many
different size kits that are available by contacting me on my
website.) It is not unusual to see kits with 30-150 remedies in
them. If you have small children, it’s a good idea to have a few key
remedies in your purse. Remedies can be purchased individually
at a cost range of $8.00-$22.00 each. By purchasing a kit, the cost
is usually reduced to below $2.00 per remedy. Because these
medicines will literally last centuries, there’s no need to replace
unused remedies with new stock.

In my personal kit, I have an extra area for emergencies that I've

added in case I need to run out of the house with the kit in an
emergency. My kit includes tweezers for splint removal, matches
for sterility, gauze, safety pins, a candle, Celtic salt (a whole salt
available at most health food stores), bandages and a few valuable
emergency tinctures such as nettles and Calendula. I also have
included Rescue Remedy, a Bach flower remedy, and a few
essential oils that are carefully wrapped so as not to antidote the
remedies. It is not a bad idea to carry some cash in your kit as
well for untold situations.

Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of

cases than any other method of treatment.
Homeopathy is the latest and refined
method of treating patients economically
and non-violently.

Conclusion
In compiling this CD, I don’t boast that I’ve added anything new to
homeopathic literature. I simply present my personal experience
as a homeopath and mother who has depended wholly on this
science.

Homeopathy treats the ailments of humanity. This means there

isn’t a single pathology I can think of that will not be benefited by
or cured as a result of it! There are many books on the subject of
homeopathy, and I encourage you to borrow or own them. My
workbook, Cure Yourself and Family with Homeopathy, is
available on my website for those who want to venture into a full
study of acute conditions. Each time you read another source,
you’ll flesh out your understanding of this vital discipline.

Traumatic events carry the element of the unexpected; therefore,

it’s imperative in taking on this responsibility that your
knowledge and equipment be in place. Yet, even a little knowledge
can be lifesaving or at least comforting to a sufferer.

Join me in this life-changing method and witness the magic of

this scientifically proven medical discipline in your own home.

Feel confident to perform in any storm!

Would you be thrilled to be able to take
care of most of the emergencies and first
aid problems that strike your family?
In Perform in the Storm, Joette Calabrese shares her proven
strategies to help mothers and others achieve health autonomy in
first aid situations…even dire ones.

Homeopathy is amazing but you have to know how to use it. This
simple learning method will give you the tools you need to keep
your life simple and drug-free while addressing just about any issue
that strikes.

If you are just starting out in using homeopathy or are more

seasoned and looking for tools to protect yourself and your family,
this simple learning system will teach you the tips and techniques
Joette has learned from teachers across the world and in her 20+
years of homeopathy practice.

No matter what storm comes your way…you'll have the tools you need at your finger tips.

Here’s what people are saying about Joette Calabrese and Perform in the Storm:

“I took a hard kick to my breast from my 10-month-old while changing his diaper. A scary
lump deep in my breast formed, but even worse the pain was severe and even excruciating
while nursing. It lasted for nearly two days until I finally decided to take charge. I have never
felt such extreme pain. Yet, within a few hours of taking Bellis perennis, the pain subsided, and
now 24 hours later, the lump is minimal with no discomfort while nursing! What would I have
done if homeopathy hadn't been available?”
Kim Cummings, San Francisco, CA

“My son accidently slammed his 6- year-old brother’s hand in the car door. After determining
that nothing was broken, my mainstream choice of medicine would’ve been Motrin. Instead, I
gave him Hypericum. Within 10 minutes, he was asking for food. Within an hour, he was back
to his old self and playing. This is not what I’ve seen using any method other than
homeopathy. And is a small example of what I’ve learned from Joette.”
Karen Slaer, San Diego, CA

“Joette Calabrese is a highly qualified tutor on staff at the British Institute of Homeopathy. In
my association with her as a colleague and as director, I find her to be a committed,
experienced and enthusiastic homeopath worthy of distinction. The British Institute is honored
to be associated with Joette.”
