1. Read the sources given below and answer the questions that follow : (4)

First of all, the war created a new economic and political situation. It led to a huge increase in
defence expenditure which was financed by war loans and increasing taxes: customs duties were
raised and income tax introduced. Through the war years prices increased – doubling between
1913 and 1918 – leading to extreme hardship for the common people. Villages were called upon to
supply soldiers, and the forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger. Then in 1918-
19 and 1920-21, crops failed in many parts of India resulting in acute shortages of food. This was
accompanied by an influenza epidemic. According to the census of 1921, 12 to 13 million people
perished as a result of famines and the epidemic.

Mumbai is the biggest port with a spacious natural and well-sheltered harbour. The Jawaharlal
Nehru port was planned with a view to decongest the Mumbai port and serve as a hub port for this
region. Marmagao port (Goa) is the premier iron ore exporting port of the country. This port
accounts for about fifty per cent of India’s iron ore export. New Mangalore port, located in Karnataka
caters to the export of iron ore concentrates from Kudremukh mines. Kochchi is the extreme south-
western port, located at the entrance of a lagoon with a natural harbour.
Moving along the east coast, you would see the extreme south-eastern port of Tuticorin, in Tamil
Nadu. This port has a natural harbor and rich hinterland. Thus, it has a flourishing trade handling of
a large variety of cargoes to even our neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Maldives, etc., and the
coastal regions of India.

1. In 20th century, with the growth of Nationalism, that the identity of India came to be visually
associated with the image of Bharat Mata.
 The image was first created by Bankim Chandra chattopadhyay.
 In Abanindranath Tagore’s painting, he portrayed Bharat Mata as an ascetic figure; she is calm,
composed divine and spiritual.

2. Industrialization and urbanization go hand in hand.


 Cities provide markets and also services such as banking, insurance, transport, labour,
consultants and financial advice, etc. to the industry.
 Many industries tend to come together to make use of the advantages offered by the urban
centres know as agglomeration economies.

3. A party that secures at least 6% of the total votes in an election to the Legislative Assembly of a
state and wins at least 2 seats is recognized as a regional or state party.
 A party that secures at least 6% of the total votes in Lok Sabha elections or Assembly elections
in 4 seats and wins at least 4 seats in the Lok Sabha is recognized as a National Party.

4. Tax on imports is an example of trade barrier.


 It is called a barrier because some restriction has been set up. Governments can use trade
barriers to increase or decrease foreign trade and to decide what kinds of goods and how much
of each should come into the country.

5.2. The three gauges of railways were given in the above table are Broad Gauge, Metre Gauge
and Narrow Gauge.

6. a) The lenders ask for a collateral before lending because:-
 Collateral is an asset that the borrower owns and uses this as a guarantee to the lender until the
loan is repaid.
 Collateral with the lender acts as a proof that the borrower will return the money.
 By keeping collateral with the lender, the borrower is bound to be regular in paying the interest
because the borrower does not want to lose the collateral.

b) Information and Communication technology has stimulated globalization process as:


 In recent years, technology in the areas of computers, telecommunication and internet has been
changed rapidly.
 Telecommunication facilitates including telegraph, telephone mobile phone, fax are used to
contact one another around the world and to get information instantly and to communicate from
remote areas.
 All this has been facilitated by satellite communication devices.
 Computers and internet have enabled people to obtain and share information on any subject.

7. The main features of the ‘Salt March’ –


Ghandhiji started historic Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram with 78 trusted volunteers.
 The distance from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, a coastal town of Gujarat was 240 miles.
 The volunteers walked for 24 days, 10 miles a day.
 On 6th April, he reached to Dandi, violated the salt law and manufactured salt by boiling sea
water.
 Thousands of people came to hear Gandhiji’s explanation about Swaraj.
8. A multiparty system is a political system in which several parties contest the election to hold political
power.
 In multiparty system, there is a chance of two or more parties coming to power and also
advocates coalition government.
 India adopted a multiparty system because
 It is blessed with tremendous social and geographical diversity. This diversity cannot be easily
accommodated in one or two political parties
 Because of multiparty system, variety of interests and opinions enjoy political representation.

9. The common features of democracies are
 In a democratic government, the general elections are held to elect a new government.
 All the citizens of the country, of and above a certain age, have the right to vote.
 Political parties are an essential part of democracy. They put up candidates who contest the
election.
 Law is supreme and all the citizens are equal in the eyes of rule of law. No one is above the law.

b) There is an over whelming support for the idea of democracy all over the world because of the
following reasons:-
 A democratic government is people’s own government. People wish to be ruled by the
representatives elected by them.
 It promotes equality among citizens.
 It improves the quality of decision making
 It provides room for correction of mistakes.
 It has the ability to generate its own support.

10. a) The government of India is trying to attract more foreign investment in the following ways –
Government has adopted the policy of liberalization and lifted the trade barriers to allow foreign
investment.
 In recent years, industrial zones called special economic zones are being set up. These areas
have world class facilities such as electricity. Water, transport, education and recreational.
 The companies setting up production units in special Economic zones are exempted from
various taxes and duties.
 The government also allowed flexibility in labour laws. The workers in the organized sector are
protected by the government laws.
 The companies in special economic zones instead could ignore many of the laws and engage
workers flexibility for shorter periods, when there is a pressure of work.

b) People deposit the surplus or extra money in the banks. The banks keep the money safe and
provide interest on it. The deposits can be drawn at any time on demand by the depositors. That is
why they are called demand deposits.
The benefits of deposits with the banks are:-
 They can be encashed by issuing cheques in the name of the person to whom the payment is to
be made.
 They make it possible to directly settle payments without the use of cash.
 Since demand drafts / cheques are widely accepted as a means of payment along with
currency, they constitute money in the modern economy.
