PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES
In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has
been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major
industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical
requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering
costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice
is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual
applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over
this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or
application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be
made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from
time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as
normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally
correct and may be substituted for those named. All practices or guidelines are intended
to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To
the extent these practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable
laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate
professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the
Practice.

1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this Practice is to provide requirements for insulation materials. This
Practice represents the consensus of major process industry companies and engineering
and construction companies.
1.2 Scope
This Practice covers requirements for hot service insulation materials and accessories.
2. References
When adopted in this specification or in the contract documents, the latest edition of the
following codes, standards, specifications and references in effect on the date of contract award
shall be used, except as otherwise specified. Short titles will be used herein when appropriate.
3. General
3.1 Insulation and accessory materials shall be furnished in accordance with the
requirements of this Practice, including the specific class, grade or type.
3.2 Insulation and accessory materials shall be formulated without asbestos.
3.3 Materials shall be new and shall be used prior to the expiration date. Sealants, mastics,
and adhesives shall be supplied in factory sealed containers.
3.4 Multi-layer calcium silicate and expanded perlite pipe insulation shall be ordered
factory-nested.
3.5 All materials shall be qualified for use on austenitic stainless steel in accordance with
ASTM C795. Upon request, the material manufacturer shall furnish test reports.
a. Material manufacturer shall also furnish a chemical analysis in accordance with
ASTM C871 for materials. This chemical analysis shall not vary by more than
50% from the chemical analysis of the production lot tested under ASTM C692.
b. Unless otherwise specified in the Purchase Order, certification of chemical
analysis is not required for each production lot from which material is furnished
for this project, however the manufacturer shall state that it will not vary by
50% from those done during the production lot tested under ASTM C795.
c. Testing shall be conducted by a Laboratory accredited by the National Institute
of Standards and Technology’s National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation
Program (NVLAB).
3.6 Use of materials other than those specified in this Practice requires prior written
approval of the Purchaser. Requests for substitutions shall be included as an alternate
in the bidder’s proposal. Requests for substitutions after contract award are not
acceptable.
3.7 All mastics, cements, adhesives, caulks, labels, marking pens and tapes that come in
contact with stainless steel shall have a maximum leachable chloride content of less
than 50 ppm, when tested in accordance with ASTM C871.
3.8 Use curved segments, beveled lags and V-grooved materials manufactured to specific
inside diameters that assure complete inside and outside diameter closure.
3.9 Fabricated insulation shall conform to ASTM C450.
4.1 General
4.1.1 Project specific insulation on piping and equipment shall conform to attached
Data Sheet PIP INSH1001.
4.1.2 Data Sheet PIP INSH1001 shall be completed by the Purchaser.
Comment: Data Sheet PIP INSH1001 specifies general requirements for
insulation of piping systems and equipment. It should be used as a general guide to
assist in developing documents with detailed insulation requirements, such as line
lists, piping isometrics, and equipment drawings.
