Describes the existence, acceptance, or promotion of multiple cultural

What is Anthropology?
Etymology:
Derived from the Greek word Anthropos (human) and Logos (study)

● Study of humans and all aspects of their being including their origin.
● It tries to provide a comprehensive understanding of what defines humans.
● It explains how humans evolve and got to be the way they are now.
Fields of Anthropology
The Four Fields of Anthropology:
Physical Anthropology- studies human beings from a biological and cultural
perspective.
Linguistic Anthropology- studies language discourse and how they reflect,
influence, and shape different aspects of humans.
Cultural Anthropology- studies the cultural variations developed across
different societies and examines the need to understand each culture in its
own context.
Archaeology- deals with prehistoric societies by studying their tools and
environment.

Participant Observation- (B. Malinowski)


is a method that requires anthropologists to have the ability to participate and
blend with the way of life of a given group of people.
Ethnography- Etymology: Greek words Ethnos (group) and grapos (writing)
the recording and analysis of a culture in a written account of people, places,
or institutions.
HOLISM
The practice of understanding as many aspects of the cultural contexts as possible.

He established the University of the Philippines


Diliman Department of Anthropology.

He taught the first anthropology courses at UP.

He was succeeded by Marcelo Tangco whose


interest is in Physical Anthropology.
