IV. 10.3 - SerVice ce1J.1ng. 18000 feet

IV.l1 - Use of the m1xture contro) dur1ng cru1se

See eng1ne manual 1f there 1s no EGT in your aircraft . It 1s

recommended that the m1xture control be used at all cru1se alt1tude .
This keeps fuel consumpt1on low and may reduce it by about 15 ~ .

The m1xture control1s used 1n conjunct1on w1th the Exhaust Gas

Temperature EGT 1f there 1s one . It 1s regulated by reference to the
max1mum temperature obta1ned, 1n other words, the max1mum
deflectlon of the needle .

ed1t1on - DECEMBER 89
AVIONS MUDRY & Cie AVION CAP lOB I PAGE: 4.9

The use of the m1xture control 1s recommended dur1ng cru1s1ng,

but 1t 1s most useful 1n certa1n cond1tlons of fl1ght, part1culary when
tak1ng off from h1gh altttude a1rf1elds, to ascerta1n max1mum power.

F1nd the "hot p01nt" that 1s the max1mum deflect10n of the

needJe . Reference that pos1t10n w1th the atd of the tndex needle .

Lean the m1xture wlth the control so as to obtaln one devIatIon

to the left . Thls g1ves the max1mum econom1c m1xture . Th1s regulat10n
shouJd be use only occas10nally dur1ng cross country fl1ght .

Enrlch the m1xture wlth the control so as to obta1n a deflect10n

of 2 d1vts10ns to the left when search1ng for max1mum power sett1ng .
It IS recommended that the engine be set rather rieh (l division) than
lean.

Check, by means of fuel flow meter, the pressure and

consumpt10n of fue1 for the power ut111zed .

M2te.: Both EGT ( Exhaust Gas Temperature ) and m1xture setttngs must
be readjusted for each change of speed, rat1ng and alt1tude . .-

- WEIGHT AND BALANCE -

6.1 Presentation

This section is approved.

It contains necessary and useful information to fly the aircraft in complete
safety.

6.2 Weighing procedure

The weighing procedure is described in the A/C Individual
Inspection Record.
The centre of gravity reference is defined by the leading edge of the airfoil
located 1.30 m from the aircraft centerline.
The reference chord length (Mean Aerodynamic Chord) is 1.50 m.
When delivered from the manufacturer, the aircraft weighing and centre of
gravity report is included in the A / C I n d i v i d u a l I n s p e c t i o n R e c o r d
(IIR).

6.3 Weight and centre of gravity breakdown

6.3.1 Method
- Assess weights. Make certain that the maximum weight is not exceeded.

Weight limits Category U Category A

Take-off 830 kg 760 kg
Landing 800 kg 760 kg

Issue: Dec. 89 Document nr 1000977 GB

Revision 8 dtd February 2007
Apex Aircraft AVION CAP 10B Page 6.3

- Calculate the centre of gravity (C of G). Make certain that balance is within
limits.
C of G limit Category U Category A
Front C of G 0.27 m 18 % 0.30 m 20 %
Rear C of G 0.45 m 30 % 0.39 m 26 %

- Locate the point (total weight and centre of gravity) on the graph. The
point will then be within the weight and centre of gravity envelope.
- Loading is acceptable if the point remains in the envelope throughout
the flight. To make certain that the point remains within the envelope
throughout the flight, calculate the centre of gravity at the end of the
flight, taking the fuel consumed into account.

VII.2 Aerobatic maneuvers

All aerobatics should be executed·· keeping in mind that this

aircraft is very clean and picks up airspeed very quickly. Also
monitor the engine RPM.
The recommended airspeed tor some basic manel:Jvers are as
follow:

lAS: kts (mph)

MANEUVERS SOLO DUAL

Loop 120 140 120 140
Reverse cuban eight 1201140 120 140
Immeiman 125 145 13011501
Siow roll 120 140 120 I 140
Outside loop 1351 155 145 165
Hammerhead 120 140 120 140

ATTENTION
For snap maneuvers, positive or inverted, the speed not
to exceed is 97 kts (111 mph or 180 km/h).

Notes:

- The engine gauges such as fuel gauges, oil pressure, oil

temperature and ammeter give false indications when the
aircraft is in inverted flight.
- Also remember that the minimum quantity of fuel in the front
tank to ensure engine operation during transition trom positive
to negative flight a~d vice versa is:
2.6 US gel. (10 I)

Attention:
Airplanes eguipped with servo tab: circuit breaker must be
switched off when performing aerobatics.

Airplanes eguipped with electric flaps: circuit breaker must be

switched off when performing aerobatics.

VII.2 - Spins
Spins are authorized in the aerobatic category. Tbe loss of altitude is about 400 feet
per turn, the spin rotation speed being about one turn in 2 seconds.
Recovery instructions :
• Rudder: opposite to the spin
• Elevator: slightly back of neutral
• Aileron: neutral
If the controls : elevator or ailerons, are not kept in the position as indicated above,
the aircraft will still come out of the spin, but recovery will take longer. In any
case, remember :
IT IS IMPERATIVE TO MAINTAIN FULL RUDDER IN THB OPPOSITE
DIRECTION OF THE SPIN FOR A COMPLElE RECOVERY:
WARNING:
C.G. position of the aeroplane has a noticeable effect on the aeroplane attitude
(pitch), during the spin.
Art C.G. (24 to 26%)
Tbe spin tends to go flat (50° pitch), indicated air speed about 150 km/h (95 mph),
left spin flatter than the right handed one.
Tbe recovery could be delayed (more than 1,5 turn).
Forward C.G. (22 to 20%)
Pitch during spin goes down 10 70°, indicated airspeed can exceed 190 km/h (120
mph), tends to go steeper when spinning right.
Airplane can move from spin 10 spiral, so check carefully the manoeuvring speed
(Va) during spin and recovery.

ATTENTION:
Depending on the CAP 10 serial number, the battery can be found on the firewall or
inside the fuselage, behind the co-pilot seat. The pilot must be aware of it's aircraft
configuration and C.G. position before any spins exercise.

ATTENTION:
Tbe aileron position has a noticeable effect on the aeroplane attitude during the
spin.
Stick opposite to the spin direction
For example, spinning left, stick 10 the right, change the spin into a tlatter spin, and
decrease the indicated air speed down to 120 km/h (75 mph).
Both together with 8ft C.G. conditions. this manoeuvre tums out to be dangerous.

AVIONS MUDRY & eie I CAP lOB I Page 7.3.2

But combined with forward C.G. conditions, this action will, unlike previously,
help to avoid the spin going to spiral, hence increasing dangerously the speed.
Stick into the spin direction
For example, spinning left, stick to the left, change the spin into a steeper spin, and
increase the indicated air speed.
Used in Mt C.G. conditions, the manoeuvre could be helpfull to avoid flat spin
tendency, but when flying with forward C.G. conditions, the same could transform
the spin into a dangerous spiral.
If the speed exceeds 190 kmh (120 mph), apply immediatly recovery procedure.

Note:
If the engine stops during the spin, you have to recover from the spin first, using
the above mentioned procedure and the try to re-start the engine following chapter
Ill.4 procedures.

VI1.3-~

The follow1ng spec1f1ed l1m1ts of the fl1ght envelope must be

str1ctly respected dur1ng the fllght . Structural strength 1scalculated
for all comb1nat1ons of speed and load factors w1th1n the envelope
spec1f1ed . Any overstepp1ng of these llm1ts may cause damages to the
a1rframe.

VI1.3.1. - Fl1ght enyeloQe l1m1ts

- Speed def1n1t1ons :

VS : stall1ng speed w1thout flaps dur1ng pos1t1ve 6 fl1ght .

VS' : 1dem at negat1ve 6 fl1ght .
VA : total deflect10n of any control surface 1s proh1b1ted
for any speed beyond VA· 127 kts ( 146 mph ) .
VNE: max. speed not to exceed VNE = 184 kts ( 211 mph ) .

- Symetr1c evolut1ons :

In pos1t1ve load factors CAP lOB 1s l1m1ted to + 6 Gup to 184

kts ( 211 mph ) .

In negat1ve load factors CAP lOB 1s 11m1ted to - 4.5 6 up to 162

kts ( 186 mph ) . Th1s 11m1t then decreases ( 1n absolute value ) from -
4.5 6 to -2.6 6 at 184 kts ( 211 mph ) .

~ : Due to the stat10nary w1ng 11ft coeff1c1ent, the max1mum value

of load factor can not be reached w1th1n the range of speed from 50 to
127 kts ( 58 to 146 mph ) . The a1rcraft stalls over the dotted curve .
S1ml1ary 1t stalls 1n negat1ve Gfl1ght w1th1n the range of speed of 75
to 162 kts ( 86 to 186 mph >.

- D1ssymetr1c evolut1ons :

Total deflect10n of any control surface 1s allowed up to 127 kts

( 146 mph ), whatever ls the 1nc1dence angle ( posit1ve or negat1ve 6
f11ght ) . The f11ght envelope llm1ts are respected ..

ed1t1on - DECEMBER 89
CAP Aviation AVION CAP 108 Page 7.5

Note: regarding the ailerons beyond 127 kts (146 mph) and till
162 kts (186 mph), the authorized deflection must not allow a
rolling-rate greater than the rate obtained at 127 kts (146 mph)
with full ailerons.

- Snap evolutions:

Some recent wind tunnel tests showed that fast incidence

variations may greatly increase maximum lift coefficient of airfoils
cause by instationary air f1ow. So a quick and total deflection of
the elevator at speeds equal or lower than VA (127 kts or 146
mph) risks to cause overstepping of a load factors, and lead to
the rupture of the structure.

Maximum authorized speed for positive or negative snap

maneuvers is: 97 kts (111 mph or 180 km/h).

VII. 3.2 - Note:

- Stirning air - gusty wind:

Example: at 162 kts (186 mph) a vertical gust of air at 985 ftlmin
will cause an extra acceleration of 1.5 G, and a 3 G extra
acceleration for 1970 ftlmin. Added to normal evolution carried
out currently at 3 G, such a gust of air may lead the aircraft out
of its f1ight envelope. Speeds and load factors should be reduced
when doing aerobatics in stirning air.
- Weights in f1ight:

CAP 108 is certified for a weight of 16751bs (760 kg) in CAT. A.

Contrary to currently established ideas, even when a pilot flies
solo, the f1ight envelope must be respected. Even if the wing
spar bears lower stress levels, stresses in the other components
of the airframe (fuselage, engine mount, wing torsion box) are
proportional to load factors or the square of the speeds and are
independent of the aircraft weight.
