Short answer - Yes.

Explaination - Let the square matrix be A.

A = 0.5(A + A') + 0.5(A − A').

Here we can observe that 0.5(A + A') is a symmetric matrix and 0.5(A − A') is a skew
symmetric matrix.

Note: Symmetry or skew symmetry can be defined only for square matrices as A = A' can
never hold in case of non-square matrices.

A complex number a + bi can be modelled by the matrix

Try, for example, multiplying (2 − 3i)(−4 + i) in the usual way:

(2 − 3i)(−4 + i) = −8 + 2i + 12i + 3 = −5 + 14i.

Then multiply it in the ‘matrix’ way

Related Does a symmetric matrix be always square matrix?

According to the holy language of mathe matics the two matrices are equal only if

1. Both have same order.

2. They have the same elements correspondingly.

Now you gave an statement that the two matrices are symmetric means the matrix and their
transpose are equal.

Looks cozy for ‘square uskuare d ‘ matrices.

But think of non square matrices if the matrix say 2×3 we take and take its transpose then the
resulting matrix comes out to be 3×2 so it don't be equal whether or not the corresponding
elements are equal and think “bhai ki corresponding elements kaise equal ho sakte hain iss
case mein“ Continue Reading

Related If A is a square matrix, then is A+A symmetric?

If A is a square matrix then we can write it as the sum of symmetric and skew symmetric
matrix.

A=(A+A') /2+(A-A') /2 ------------(1)

Now given A is a Square matrix,then A+A is also a square matrix.

We need to show that A+A is symmetric, that means A+A=A'+A'

=2A=2A'

=A=A'

Now, putting A=A', at equation (1)

A=A, which is true

So A+A is symmetric, when A is a square matrix. Hence proved.

Yes of course it can be.

Any square matrix, A can be expressed as:

A = ((A+Ā)/2) + ((A-Ā)/2)

Where, Ā is the transpose of matrix A

In the expression, the first term, i.e., ((A+Ā)/2) is the symmetric matrix and the second term,
i.e., ((A-Ā)/2) is the skew symmetric matrix.

Related What is the determinant of every skew symmetric matrix?

A skew-symmetric matrix M satisfies

T
M = −M .

Thus

T n
det(M ) = det(−M ) = (−1) det(M )

where n is the dimension of M . Also det(M

T
) = det(M ) , so we have

n
det(M ) (1 − (−1) ) = 0.

Thus, either det(M ) = 0 , or (−1)n = 1 . In other words, the determinant of a skew-

symmetric matrix is 0 whenever its dimension is odd.
