INTRODUCTION
With the globalization of trade, reaching more customers for their products and
services became an important issue for firms and multinational companies. Therefore, the
need of crossing language barriers begin to rise since the people around the world they want
to get do not speak the same language. In the same way, writers and authors in literature
across the globe want their works to be read beyond their borders, but the problem of the
language diversity still arises since each community has its own language with it culture and
customs. This variety of languages bring forth the need of translation in order for them to
make possible the transfer of the different messages they want to convey to their customers
and readers. Yet, translation, even though it is a new issue, problems related to strategies,
methods and techniques and other general problems still arise. Researchers in translation
studies around the world work tirelessly to come up with ways and strategies as to how to
It is in that perspective that as a student in translation, I carried out this research work
on the translation of the novel of Bernard Dadié Le Pagne Noir (pp. 74 - 83) and Child abuse
(pp. 1 - 9), a short story written by Iwuanyanwu Justice. The book of Bernard Dadié is a
collection of tales, and the chapter which has been my extract of translation intitled “Les
funérailles de mère Iguane”, dealt with a broken friendship between Kacou Ananze and
Iguana-Son ; and the short story of Iwuanyanwu is about the mistreatment of Olanne, a ten-
year old motherless girl. For my research, I read about different books including the
of our senior students and articles on the internet. The qualitative research has helped to

Iguana-Son and kacou Ananze the Spider, were friends whose friendship was turning
green again over the time. Everywhere we were astonished at this friendship which overcame
all obstacles by its very profusion. More than two friends would have liked to be like Iguana-
Son and Kacou Ananze, but their mutual mistrust prevented them from being like Iguana-Son
and Kacou Ananze. Many were those who constantly said to Iguana-Son:
- Why?
- A friendship with Kacou Ananze the spider it‟s expensive. With him we are always
taken for a ride. He deceived the man, the monkey, the lion, the panther, the elephant, the fox,
the dog, and it is you that he will spare? Warning! The friendship of a Spider weighs as much

as that of an elder, and very heavy is the vanity of an upstart. Ananze the spider is only an
- I do not know.
Time passed, strengthening the bonds of this friendship. Bad tongues no longer speaking from
them, their friendship, as freed from the over-useless geons, drained, bloomed more
beautifully!
But one evening, after the meal, they were chatting, the
Women on one side, children on the other, all around the fire, when a stranger bring the news
...which troubled the village, the cruel news: Iguana-Mother had just died
Mother Iguana was the bravest mother. And the son was crying, crying. He threw himself
here, threw there, rolled in the dust, scraped the ground with his paws, his fingernails, and
banged his head against a certain wall. And it had become dirty, dirty, the poor lguana who
had just lost his mother. Kacou Ananzè tried to cry, but did you ever seen the tears of a
spider? Tears, Kacou Ananze has none. We had to leave for the funeral.
One morning, at the first crowing of the rooster, after preparations were made, our two
Iguana-Son, not used to long races frequently rested. And to give themselves courage,
the two travelers sometimes sang, sometimes practiced crying, for custom dictates that in such
a situation we cry as soon as we reach the village. Iguana-Son was crying with a hoarse voice
that displeased Kacou Ananze. The latter remarked it to him. Iguana-Fils was injured. Yet he
said nothing and kept his wound deep in his heart. It was turn of Kacou Ananze to cry.
And now his friend Iguana-Son watches him start to cry while singing.
5
E-lan mô be su-han be n‟zu n‟zô
Be sun akolon minsan miahlo…ôô
Amo zihaba miahlo... ô-ô !
Until the moment of this song, it had never entered the head of Kacou Ananzè to play a
trick on his friend. But as soon as the latter had finished crying, calling his parents drunkards
“akolonminsan miahlô!” oh-oh! Then he said to himself: “You, I‟ll get you”. When the

- This is necessary. It is a precaution. You know, devils, wizards, when they know your
- I don't understand.
- You‟re a moron. I‟ve always been told that, I realize that today.
This was the second wound that Kacou Ananze made to Iguana, and he still kept it deep in his
heart.
- Let's take a nickname. You will be called Sedentary Dad, and me Foreign Dad.
Understood?
- Understood.
- OK?
- OK!
- And above all remember that you are Sedentary Dad, and me, Foreign Dad.

The simple of minds are so made that they hang their feelings on all the thorns as if to test
their solidity. Iguana-Son had just fallen into the trap, and the Spider was going to teach him
At nightfall, they entered the village where it was announced that Iguana-Son had just arrived
for his mother's funeral. After the tears, the news said and repeated, the meal was brought to
the travelers in the hut placed at their disposal. The girl who brought the dishes, placing them
- Eh? Said Kacou Ananze, putting his hand in the pavilion to hear better, his ear turned
- Did you hear, Iguana? It‟s Papa Stranger. Is that what you said little girl?
- Yes I do
And alone, under his friend's beard, Kacou Ananze ate the dishes. Iguana swallowed saliva
as he watched his friend take bites-sized as big as a fist. It had been going on for two weeks.
All the dishes that came- and everyone in the village wanted to outdo the neighbor in
generosity - all the dishes were therefore for Foreign Dad, that is to say Kacou Ananze the
spider. He ate them without giving any to Iguana-Son. He ate, clicking his tongue sucking a
bone for a long time, licking his fingers, piô! piô! Belching with force: gahôwe!
- How sweet! I assure you, lguana that in this country, there are real cookers, piô!
Piô! I am thinking of coming back to take a wife here ... gahôwe! What do you think about it?
- You see, my friend, the men of your village are mean. They constantly forget you in the
distribution of dishes. Obviously you are a Sedentary Dad, while me, Foreign Dad, I‟am the
stranger that everyone wishes to honor. Patience, Good turn deserve to another. But tomorrow

was coming and the dishes like the previous days were all for Foreign Dad. Lguana-Son had
become unrecognizable and weak! Now he had to dance all the time, and Iguana-Son danced
with hunger in his stomach. Unable to take it any longer, he was getting up at night, and on
the dumps, was going to get something to eat. He was wasting away all the same; her

- So what‟s wrong?
- Nothing.
- You are worrying us. It would certainly be necessary to return to your village ... Look at
When you come back the people from there will say that here, you did not have to eat.
- Yes! Yes! Yes! How stupid we are sometimes! But this is due to the grief you are
experiencing. Bah! You know, that‟s life! Today, present, tomorrow, absent! There is not
much there to worry about to the point of wasting away like this.
- Hum!
- Cares.
- Cares? We all have them, drown them in palm wine, in the dishes. When you are well
"drunk", worries no longer have a door of entry into you. We will increase the rations.
- My friend doesn't like travel. He gets thinner when we move, and that you can believe it

said. Bad tongues have nice game. I therefore believe that from now on, I will no longer travel
- Come on, you're not going to quarrel over so few things, let‟s see. He‟s grieving. That‟s
all. The dishes will be so plentiful and varied that your friend Iguana will have to put on
weight.
Indeed, the dishes were abundant, varied, but Iguana-Son was wasting away all the time,
because that the little girls who brought the meals all repeated the endless phrase:
The people no longer understood anything about this Iguana-Son affair. In such cases,
it happens that wizards eat you at night. This was not the case with Iguana. Because we had
questioned fate and it had said that no devil at night “ate” Iguana. Was his mother angry?
His mother, through the Wizards, had replied: “No!” Everyone in the village was therefore
- When you get there, with the dishes, what are you used to saying?
- And then?
- That's all.
- One, the bigger one, makes me repeat my sentence every time as if he were deaf.
- After?
- After? He said to his friend: “Did you understand? The meal is for Foreign Dad only.”

- Hmm! It's good. Tomorrow, when you have brought the meals, to the other who sits
In the evening, the girl came with the food and placed them in front of Kacou Ananze the
spider and said: “Here is the meal of Foreign Dad” and immediately ask to lguana:
The girl reported this to the old mother. And that very night, the nickname of Iguana-
Son was known to all the women of the village. The next day all meals came in Dad
Sedentary‟s name.
- don't you have the wrong name? Did not your mom‟s tell you: Foreign Dad?
- You are confusing the names. They probably told you: Foreign Dad.
- It's not worth it. Tomorrow, your moms will know they got the wrong name. We only
receive foreigners. They know it well. We only bring meals for stranger. You know it
yourselves.
Iguana-Son in turn ate in front of his friend. He was licking his fingers, belching. Bites
followed bites. And the dishes had such aromas, and the hut was all embalmed with it. Kacou
Ananze, to Iguana, told stories from the old days. He was not listening to her, busy eating, his

On the third day, Kacou Ananze said to his friend:
- Uh, you know, your mom's funeral is a bit too long. It is time that we go back. Work

Iguana turned a deaf ear. And the feast of funeral was in full swing.
That evening again the little girls had come with the meals and each one, putting down what
- It‟s okay, it‟s my friend. Me, I tell you our friendship is proverbial and quoted
everywhere as an example. You‟ve never heard of it? A friendship like ours, not like it under
the sky. Foreign Dad and Sedentary Dad, that‟s like the fingers of the hand; always together.
Isn‟t that lguana? Iguana did not respond. He was opening the dishes one after the other.
Chicken, mutton, veal, goret, guinea fowl ... And it smelled so good! So good! And the aroma
of it all emballmed the hut. Iguana was eating. He was eating when the tom-tom sounded.
Iguana, before going to the dance, near the dishes, put on one of his skins. Kacou Ananze also
went dancing. Taking advantage of the crowd‟s inattention, the Spider ran into the hut. To

in the crowd. Spider returned to the hut. Iguana was near the dishes. He came out. Iguana was
still dancing, greeted by the women, acclaimed by all. He danced really well. And now he
challenges Spider to the dance. His friend took up the gauntlet. But with hunger in his
stomach has been beaten by Iguana-Son that the village whole carried in triumph. That same
evening the two friends left the village of the mother lguana. And that same evening their
Lors de la traduction de ces extraits, nous avons utilisé des procédés de traduction pour
obtenir un tant soit peu une traduction plus exact en tenant compte de la structure linguistique
de la langue d‟arrivée. En voici quelques illustrations :
1-3-2- La transposition
12
« La case mise à leur disposition » traduite par “the hut placed at their disposal”. Ici, le
substantif mise devient le participe passé placed.
Infinif/Participe passé (p. 75)
« mere Iguane venait de mourir » par “mother Iguana had just died”. L‟infinitif « mourir »
prend la forme du participe passé “died”.
Adjectif/Verb (p. 80)
Nous avons aussi l‟adjectif « chagrin » qui se transforme en verbe “greiving” ce qui nous
permit de traduire Il a du chagrin par “ He is greiving”.
1-3-3- Modulation
La modulation est une variation dans le message, obtenue en changeant de point de vue,
d‟éclairage. Elle se justifie quand on s‟aperçoit que la traduction littérale ou même transposée
aboutit à un énoncé grammaticalement correct, mais qui se heurte au génie de la Langue
d‟Arrivée. En voici des illustrations.
« Il ne dit rien » par “he said nothing” literally would give « Il dit rien » what is
1-3-4- Equivalence
J‟ai fait face à des phrases idiomatiques, des locutions adverbiales, des proverbes
etc… qui nécessitaient donc une équivalence pour une traduction plus fidèle.
« Très lourde est la vanité d‟un parvenu » (p. 74) par “very heavy is the vanity of an upstart”
traduction machine, on a “The simple of minds are so made that they hang their feelings on all
the thorns as if to test their solidity”.
(p. 75). Le dictionnaire a
donné comme traduction : roll in, roll along, roll up et pour l‟expression « se rouler » j‟ai
obtenu “welter”. Un autre exemple est le mot « Etranger » qui a été utilisé comme pseudo de
Kacou Ananze lors de leur arrivée dans le village de mère Iguane (p. 77). Ce même mot a été
utilisé par Kacou Ananze dans la phrase: « On ne reçoit que les étrangers » (p. 81). Le
dictionnaire nous a fourni quatre définitions à savoir: stranger, foreign, overseas, and
extraneous. Une troisième illustration est le mot « méchant ». Selon le dictionnaire nous
avons: vicious, bad, evil, malicious, nasty, unkind, wicked, fiendish, malign, mean,
mischievous, naughty. Tous ces équivalents pour le seul mot français “méchant”;
14
obtenu comme traduction : “very heavy is the vanity of an upstart”; la phrase « les mauvaises
langues ont beaux jeux » (p. 79) toujours avec l‟aide d‟un moteur de traduction m‟a permis
d‟obtenir : “Bad tongues have nice game”.
15
lui répondre : « E-ni mô su-han be n‟zu n‟zô, E-lan mô be su-han be n‟zu n‟zô, Be sun akolon

2-1 Summary of the novel
This short story written by Iwuanyanwu Justice is about Olanne a small girl who lost her
mother at a tender age and was left in a care of her father‟s new wife. After enduring ill-
treatement from her, an opportunity arose for her to move to the city to live with her uncle
and his wife. Her relocation were appeared to be a sweet escape but unfortunately something
more sinister was awaiting her. But the fact that there is always an end for the evil will be the

2-3-2- Modulation
Modulation is a variation of the form of the message, obtained by a change in the point
of view. It changes the semantics and shifts the point of view of the source language. Through
modulation, the translator generates a change in the point of view of the message without
altering meaning and without generating a sense of awkwardness in the reader of the target
text. This change can be justified when, although a literal, or even transposed, translation

Missing words
Sometimes the translator can be face to some words which have not meaning in the

The translation of this extract has not been an easy task. For the fulfilment of this work,
some things has been necessary: diverse documents about translation, dictionaries
(Unilingual, bilinguals, idioms and proverbs), translations softwares etc… It is obvious that I

read carefully this extract before starting it‟s translation in order to be aware of the global
meaning. I have been faced to many difficulties, but the most of them were the following
ones: difficulties to translate words with multiple meanings, compounds words, missing
Dictionaries, and sofwares lent me a great handle to overcome that difficulties. Through
this work, I understood that to become a professional and good literary translator, the
translator must be a good and passionate reader in the aim to be familiar and to master the
structure of each of the two languages he is dealing with. He should go beyond the simpler
task of translator like the others domains of translation because he should be creative. That
appear impossible without reading. Translator must have at his disposal different dictionaries

that excerpts.
During a translation, when the translator come across some words without translation or
missing words in the target language, across multiple meanings, What to do in that case ?
Only the understanding of the meaning can help to translate them because, sometimes all the
words provided by the dictionary are not adequate to transfer with faithfulness what the
Source Language stipulates. That is why the meaning is the most important before starting
translate literary works. It is after the meaning perceiving that the translator can start to use
the style and to create and make original his translation. So, literary translation involves

CONCLUSION
Translation is foremost a linguistic operation that involves two different languages, the
source language and the target language. It permits people not speaking the same language to
communicate efficiently without having to learn the language of the other. Difficulties related
to translation are numerous but they vary from a translator to another; depending on the
language level of each one of them. There are different types of translation that help convey
messages in each field of social and economic life. Literary translation, which I dealt with in
this project, as one of the types of translation is of paramount importance, since it allows
people to have access and learn about literary works pertaining to other countries,
communities and their cultures. However, studies showed that this type of translation appears
to be the most difficult one to perform owing to its biggest linguistic demands. Translators in
that domain are faced with specific difficulties that make their job hard to complete.
In order to discover and understand these challenges, I carried out my research work
on the translation of the novel of Bernard Dadié Le Pagne Noir (pp. 74 - 83) for the practice
of Theme and Child Abuse (pp. 1-9) for the practice of Version, a short story by Iwuanyanwu
Justice.
This study has been possible thanks to qualitative research which helped me to collect
and analyse data stemming from my reading of books including the Stylistique comparée du
Français et de l’Anglais by Vinay and Darbelnet, other dissertations of our senior students
and articles on the internet. The premise of this study is that difficulties related to literary
works translation come within the poor level of language mastery, the lack of passion for
literature that create the big problem of understanding and the problem of translation
My work is subdivided into two chapters; chapter 1 dealt with Theme. In it, I have
summed up and translated Le Pagne Noir (pp. 74-83), then illustrated the methods and

techniques of translation, sorted out the difficulties of translation I encountered and finally
In the second chapter dealing Version, I have summed up and translated Child Abuse
(pp. 1-9), then illustrated the methods and techniques of translation used, brought out the
difficulties of translation encountered and finally gave my personal stand about the translation
of this excerpt.
The translation of the both extracts pushed me to come out with difficulties in
and equivalence problems that I have developed dealing with the personal stand. In order to
solve them, I used unilingual French dictionary and English one to understand the words and
expressions that were hard for me to translate. After the meaning was understood, I then used
bilingual online dictionaries, DeepL translator and French idioms app to translate them by
Seeing that the difficulties related to translation especially literary one are various and
most of them pertaining to languages systems, I suggest that translation students in this field
learn deeply their first and second languages. That they learn about the stylistic and lexical
features of the languages they work with. But more importantly, I would recall the saying that
“to be good at translation one must be a great reader”. To this I add that daily practice of
translation and constant updating of their knowledge will be of paramount help for any
translator, professional or not. I would like to finish by reminding that anybody can become a
translator if they devote themselves to it and work hard by abiding by the theories of
