II. Root Words and Affixes – pp. 6-7


• Root Words - a root as its name suggests, is a word or word part from

which other words grow, usually through the addition of

prefixes and suffixes.

• Affixes - group of letters attach before and after the root word.

• Suffixes - a group of letters placed after the root word.

• Prefix - is a group of letters that are used at the beginning of a word to

change the words meaning

- changes the meaning of a word.

- is added to the beginning of a word to make a new word.

• Suffix - added to the end of a word to change a word's meaning


III. Context Clues – pp. 72-73

• Context Clues are important reading strategy. It is a phrase, a

sentence, or a group of sentences that surrounds a focus

word that gives a hint about its meaning. It increases the

child’s vocabulary, reading comprehension, and makes

learners better readers.

Types of Context Clues

1. Definition – a writer gives the meaning of a word

2. Restatement – a writer may say a word in another way to clarity and

emphasis

3. Example – a sample may follow a word to explain its meaning

4. Comparison – a writer shows how an unfamiliar word is like something

more familiar

5. Contrast – a writer may give the opposite of an unfamiliar word.
