Difference between Central Power Supply System and UPS
Central power supply systems are a specific type of power solution used for emergency and safety-related applications such as lighting, alarms and security systems.
Also known as Central Supply Systems (CSS), these units share many of the design and operational features of a typical online UPS.
To be classified as a CPSS, the product must strictly meet the criteria outlined on EN 50171 standard for supplying essential safety or centralized emergency operation
systems. This standard was released for emergency systems that are permanently connected to AC supply voltages not exceeding 1,000V which use batteries as an alternative
power source. Also, the UPS rescuer should comply with prescriptions provided for by the IEC EN 62040-3 standard (Static continuity systems) to be used for these kind of
applications.
CPS systems are used to provide continuous power to emergency-related applications and devices such as:
• Emergency lighting

• Fire safety and prevention i.e., fire extinguishers, smoke extractors, lifts (designed to operate in the event of a fire)

• Alarms and other emergency detection systems

• Warning systems such as carbon monoxide detectors

• Safety signals and other signaling installations

• Control rooms

• Mechanical Extract Ventilation systems

• Electro-medical devices

A standard UPS system rarely meet the requirements of EN 50171 and should not be used for such critical emergency applications.

By the way, some specially-designed UPS meet this strict criteria as these solutions are specifically developed for a specific task and environment.

EN50171 standard
The CEI / EN 50171 standard establish the characteristics and performances that a
centralized UPS must have to be used as a power source for emergency lighting
systems.
According to the legislation, a CPSS UPS must meet specific requirements:
• In compliance with the EN 1838 standard, the CPSS must be able to supply 120% of
the nominal load, at least for the duration of the expected autonomy (nominal
duration) and be able to start a load, previously switched off, with a response time of
0.5 seconds.
• The inverter must be protected against reverse battery polarity.
• The main input and the emergency (bypass) line must be protected by external
automatic breakers.
• The CPSS must not consist externally of flammable components.
• Following a discharge of the entire expected autonomy, the CPSS must be able to
recharge its batteries in order to provide at least 80% of the original autonomy within
12 hours from the start of the charge.
• The batteries installed in a CPSS UPS must be of the long-life type, the expected life
declared by the manufacturer must not be less than 10 years and the sizing must
provide for a project autonomy at the end of life of 25%.
• In compliance with the EN 50272-2 standard, the batteries must be installed in rooms
with a temperature below 25 ° C, an automatic and manual test device must also be
provided for the cyclical control of the battery status.
• The CPSS must adopt a battery protection system against complete discharge, an
event that would lead to its irreparable damage.
Optionally, it would be recommended a galvanic isolation of the input and output of the
UPS.

Furthermore, EN 50171 standard also mention that the centralized power supply systems for emergency and safety has to be equipped with functional verification and measurement
devices.
The standard also requires the presence of signals through dry contacts related to:
• Battery operation
• Pre-alarm condition of end of autonomy
• Presence of generic alarm conditions
These conditions must be announced also by an acoustic warning.
A safety system, therefore, requires an adequate choice of the CPSS system to be used in compliance with current European legislation.
Vertiv solution specifically designed for security systems, in medium power applications, is the three phase Liebert EXM2.
EXM2 CPSS unit is available in 2 different sizes (from 80 kVA up to 200 kVA), equipped with cutting-edge technology such as the Power Factor 1 at the output and the ability to reach
an efficiency of 97% in double conversion or 98,8% on dynamic online mode operation.
In addition, Vertiv equipment can be also configurate with an optional harware kit to increase the IP (ingress protections) rating.
Many other options are available, for any additional info please contact your local Vertiv Sales representative.
