Group Written Report

In the Caribbean social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture and especially our
youths. The negativity of social media continues to spread in schools in the Caribbean. As a group, we
wanted to see how negatively social media affected teens. As a result, we searched for pieces form
different genres that dealt with the negative impact of social media. The sub-topics were;
Cyberbullying, the effects of social media on mental health and social media and its effect on society.
Each member was assigned roles like, leader, editor, reporter and recorder.
From the nine pieces collected by our group, we selected, the articles on “Social media and
body image” and “Cyberbullying”. As well as the graphic based on the impact of social media on
youths’ mental health. We selected these three pieces because they all describes the dangers and
also the positive effects of using social media.
The newspaper article on “Cyberbullying” shone light on the issue in TT. It also emphasised
that cyberbullying made children feel inferior. The “Ranking of social media platforms” survey
indicated that Instagram is the most negative social media platform. It causes feelings of loneliness
and anxiety. Lastly, the magazine article “Social media make me feel ugly” highlighted the negative
experiences some people may have with social media such as the reality of danger of cyberbullying
that impacts on someone’s mental health.
Our group had to overcome many challenges due to some members being absent or
breaking class. However, we overcame said obstacles with keeping regular group meetings during the
break periods. Doing this we developed a positive attitude towards teamwork and also learnt time
management.
