Project work
B. Tech: Bio mimetic shock absorption mechanism based upon the woodpecker’s head structure
In this study, a novel geometry for high velocity impact protection has been proposed, that consists
of multiple layers of different materials with specific properties, and has been inspired from the
structure of a woodpecker’s head and armadillo armor. The behaviour of the same under the impact
of a cylindrical using FEA (ANSYS).
M. Tech: A biomimetic design for high energy impact mitigation structures*
In this work, shock absorption mechanisms found in natural structures, such as woodpeckers, nacre
(found in mollusk shells) and smasher limbs of the Mantis shrimp are studied, and a novel design
using combinations of two or more of these mechanisms is proposed. The same is optimized using
suitable techniques such as FEA (ABAQUS) and a few samples are subjected to suitable
experimental tests.
