ACADEMIC PROJECTS
B Tech
Project Description: A system is developed that can be incorporated into the manual trans-
mission two wheelers for automation which is expected to improve the mileage. A trans-
mission efficiency test rig is developed to compare the transmission efficiencies and
thereby mileage of continuous variable transmission with that of the manual transmission.
Utilizing the above results and national statistics, we could estimate the total savings in
fuel consumption and thereby opening a new path for pollution control.

Project Description: The need for a cutting tool wear prediction system that senses tool
wear and allows for the optimum utilization of the tool between two regrinding operations
is a deciding characteristic in the quality of machined products. Surface roughness, dimen-
sional accuracy etc. are the most important factors influencing the quality of manufactured
components which is primarily dependent on the life of the cutting tool which in turn is
adversely affected by tool wear. The acoustic emission signals emerged from different ma-
chining operations can be used as a means for predicting the tool condition since the acous-
tic signal characteristics can be correlated with tool wear progression. The objective of this
work is to determine the variation in acoustic signal characteristics with tool flank wear in
conventional turning operation using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT).
