ACADEMIC TRAININGS & PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

Institution: Duratuf Glass Industries Pvt.Ltd., Delhi Duration: 40 days, June-July'19

Project Title: Manufacturing and moulding of toughened glass
Mentor: Mr. Sudhir Kumar, Senior Chemist, Duratuf Glass Industries Pvt. Ltd., Delhi
Description: During the training, I studied about properties of toughened glass. As the name suggests, this glass is
about four times stronger than the normal annealed glass. The special feature of this glass is that it is
available in any form and curve as per the requirements of architects and the surface compressive
strength of tempered glass is about 25,000 psi as compared to around 10,000 psi of normal sheet glass.
I also analyzed the process of manufacture of toughened glass. The raw plate glass sheet is cut to
required size and shape and then all the edges are ground and polished as per end use of the product.
This is called edge grinding and polishing. After the edge grinding and polishing the glass sheets are
washed manually or by machine and then dried. The glass sheets are fed into the furnace (Electrically
operated). After attaining required temperature, the glass sheets are removed out of the furnace and
placed in the air blowing quenching boxes for 20 to 25 seconds. After quenching glass sheet is
toughened. For bend glass toughening, the glass sheets pass through a set of dies (as per shape) after
furnace and then to the quenching boxes. After toughening all the sheet glasses are passed through the
polariscope inspection.

MAJOR Project
Project Title: Economic Design and Analysis of Solar Vapor Compression Refrigeration System
Mentor: Dr. A.K. Pratihar, Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, COT, GBPUAT, Pantnagar
Description: The project focusses on the economic design and analysis of solar assisted vapor compression system.
Solar energy is the main source of energy that is utilized to run solar refrigerator. So significant
amount of electrical power is saved, and it also causes less pollution that would have been added due
to the use of power produced by the conventional power plants. The system design involves solar
panel, charge controller, battery and inverter additionally with the compressor, condenser, expansion
device and evaporator as used in the conventional refrigeration system. The system if compared with
the one which runs purely on electricity without any solar aid will encounter both cost of setup and
running cost, whereas the system under study involves a fixed cost and practically negligible running
cost. The project includes the description of the testing methods used along with the calculation of
theoretical and actual parameters of the system. The economic analysis of setting up of a solar
powered vapor compression system has been carried out which includes the breakeven analysis and
calculation of recovery period.
