SHOULD CORPORAL PUNISHMENT RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM?

Corporal punishment in British state schools was banned by Parliament in 1987. In private schools it was
banned in 1999 in England and Wales, 2000 in Scotland, and 2003 in Northern Ireland.
A survey suggests that half of the parents would like to see the return of corporal punishment in schools.
BBC News: TALKING POINT
Binky, England: No one can say or do anything to rowdy kids these days – they have no respect for adults
and have the protection of ‘human rights’ to hide behind to cause as much trouble as they like. If there is the
threat of punishment, they might keep their cheeky mouths shut.
Chris, UK: I was struck at school and I deserved it. It worked too! I'm not saying beat children but a short
sharp shock works.
Judith, UK: If it stops them disrupting the lessons of the thirty other children in the class, its benefits are
more than any possible harm done to ‘the individual’. Why should the needs of one disruptive child come
above those of the class?
Dave, USA: When I was a boy, the discipline was quite severe. But today a teacher would be arrested or
sued for damages for exercising such discipline. Things have changed drastically in the classroom. The same
is true about the discipline in families. Parents don't concern themselves with their kids as they used to. And
discipline should start in the home.
Georgina, UK: A father came up to me on parent’s evening and demanded that I should discipline their
daughter and make her behave when at home, go to bed on time, etc., as the mother did not have time to.
With this sort of ‘parental support’ I wonder if the ability to use physical force within limits will be enough?
Children have waved knives at me – teachers need to be able to do something.
