Sustainable practices in Indian

Agriculture- A case study of solar

energy initiative for agriculture in
Bokaro district

Preface

Since the beginning of agriculture, it has seen many modifications. Agriculture has

now become a complex scientific activity. The main aim of agriculture is to produce

maximum food with minimum time, space and energy in order to meet the needs of a

growing population and economy. India is predominantly considered as agrarian

country. In India, agriculture significantly contribute to the NNP of the country as it

provides livelihood to a large section of the labourers.

The agriculture sector of the country accounts for the 1/4th of the economy and it also

gives employment to almost 60 percent of the population of the country. But this

practice of giving employment results in inefficient, wasteful, and incapable of

solving the hunger and malnutrition problems of the people. There has been progress

as well i.e., seen in this sector but the problems related to this remained the same for

decades. It is also important to note here that according to a study one-fifth of the total

output of the agriculture in the country is lost due to various reasons such as

inefficiency in harvesting, transport, and storage of government-subsidized crops.

The agriculture depends heavily on the Electricity for various activities – like,

irrigation, watering, drying, pumping etc. However, the cost of conventional energy

increases significantly while taking them to remote areas. Hence, the most suitable
solution would be to employ alternative energy sources also termed as the sustainable

energy sources – like – Solar Energy, Windmills, Green Bio Fuel etc.

This study focuses on the role of the Solar Energy in the agriculture sector with

special reference to Bokaro District of Jharkhand. The various initiatives have been

identified and examined for their impact.

India's arrangement to happen to the biggest sun-oriented force markets on the planet

has gotten a huge lift as the most recent gauge of its sunlight-based force potential.

The Public Establishment of Sun-based Energy in India has decided the country's

sunlight-based force potential at around 750 GW, and as of late delivered report by

the Service of New& Sustainable power (MNRE) shows. The sun-based force

potential has been assessed utilizing the no man's land accessibility information in

each state and purview of India. The gauge depends on the understanding that solitary

3% of the all-out no man's land accessible in a state is utilized for the improvement of

sun-based force projects.

Through this detailed survey and study, it can be concluded that that in the Bokaro
district of Jharkhand there is significant Relationship between level of education of
the farmers and level of awareness about energy conservation. There is significant
relationship between personal factors of the farmers and extent of standardization and
labelling of electrical equipment. Various initiatives taken by the Government like
electrification, automation, solar pump installation, etc. has affected the overall use of
renewable energy sources for farming.
