Final Report Guide (Jun 2022)

Dear students,

Congratulation, you are about half way to complete your internship. You should be drafting your final
report as part of the requirement of the internship. The following is a guide for you to report your
internship experience in a structured way. Your report should contain ALL of the 10 following parts.

In addition, you may refer to page 5 for the general marking rubric.

1. General structure of report


1.1 Your report should contain the following sections, with clearly labelled headers and sections.

Structure of report
• Cover page
• Abstract
• Acknowledgement
• Table of content
• Company, department and industry background
• Roles, responsibility, training and contribution
• Application of course or industry domain knowledge and skills in the workplace
• Application of the problem-solving process in the workplace
• Reflect on learning points and adaptability in the workplace
• Reflect on career and professional learning plans
• Conclusion
• References
• Appendix

1.2 The abstract should contain brief information that provides executive summary, the length is
not more than 1-page.

• Key learning points

1.3 The format of the report should follow the essential features of a professional report as shown
below. The report should be presented with good English and easy to understand.

• Page numbering
• Labelled diagrams/ images/ tables
• Reference to images/tables in the texts

2. Describe company, department and industry background

• Describe the industry the company is in


• Describe company, product line and technology (E.g. technical specification, systems etc)
• Describe department you are interning (Eg structure, line of reporting)

3. Describe roles, responsibility, training and contribution

During the internship journal, you are likely assigned a role or two. Your role in the company helps
you to understand tasks given. Do include the following narration.

• Role in company
• Responsibility of role
• Contribution to company
• Collaboration with staff/ intra/inter/external parties
• Show initiative (E.g. Helping others in company, giving suggestion)
• Training given by company

4. Describe the application of course or industry domain knowledge and skills in the workplace

The following are some of the examples

• Describe related course, industry domain skills and processes


• Describe the coordination of project (work with two or more departments etc)
• Compliance with safety, SOP, industry regulation (EMA, CAAS, SAC etc)
• Report data collected, analyse and present results
• Apply programming skill (E.g. Office automation, coding, CNC program, etc)
• Apply digital skill (Eg: Use of MS Office)
• Use of engineering tools (E.g. Autocad, CNC machine etc)

5. Describe the application of the problem-solving process in the workplace

During internship, you often need to demonstrate problem solving process with analytical and
critical thinking at the workplace. Do include the following narration.

• Identify and describe the engineering issue


• Collection of data for root causes identification
• Identify possible root causes/problems
• Generate possible solutions (what if, alternative solution etc)
• Justify the selected solutions
• Implement solutions/Perform repair/Present solution for supervisor for feedback
• Evaluate and report results (backed by data/evidence)/ Evaluate supervisor’s feedback
• Review solution and make recommendations (suggestion for further improvement/
effectiveness of current solution)

6. Reflect on learning points and adaptability in the workplace

Internship experience provided many valuable lessons. Many of them are beyond the studies at the
classroom. You should describe the learning experience in detail using the reflection process listed
below,

• Evaluate the learning experience (E.g. good and pain points)
• Make sense of the learning experience,

- E.g. Identify gaps, strength and weaknesses

- E.g. Responsibility (Follow instruction, evaluation of tasks completion)
- E.g. Get help/advice (Seek advise, expert help etc)
- E.g. Stress management
- E.g. Organisation skill (plan events, schedules, time management etc)
• Applying learning in future similar context
• Describe the Cross cultural experience (CQ)
- E.g. Cultural sensitivity and challenges

7. Reflect on career and professional learning plans

Recall in year 1, in career and professional preparation programme you may like to relate that to
the post internship plans. Describe the following

• Job relatedness of the internship to your course


• Industry sector of the internship
• Your suitability in this internship job role (based on RIASEC profile)
• Career roadmap (include university or certification)
• Desired career preference
• Qualification and skill required
• Plans to upgrade self to gain new knowledge and skills required
• Digital portfolio
• Updated with internship experience and share the link in your report

8. Conclusion

Conclusion would contain brief summary of internship, learning points, and contributions.

9. References

The references contain list of books, articles, website, media that are cited in the report.

10. Appendix

The appendix should include

• (Compulsory) Contact information of company mentor, supervisors and NPIS.


• Other information referred to in the main report (E.g. datasheet, appendix,
equipment/system specification).
