LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Perform volleyball specific skills while sitting
2. Play a game of sitting volleyball

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT


● Volleyballs
● 3 Badminton Nets
● 4 Badminton Poles
● Beach Balls
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
● Badminton Nets will need to be put up
● Unattended balls flying or unready targets. 
● Students will have their heads level with the net

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
● Before class greet students at the door
● Attendance as they enter
● Students enter the gym and get changed before the second bell. 10 min
● Once changed students will come sit in their assigned spots

Body Time

Dynamic Warmup ● Student Led


● 3 cardio – to the other end of the gym and back
● 5 lower body - from one end of the gym to the other
● Grabbing a partner and a volleyball students will complete
a volleyball specific warmup:
● 3 of each per partner 10 min
● Two hand overhand throw
● One hand overhand throw (both arms)
● Two hand overhand slam
● One hand overhand slam (both arms)

Pepper ● Students will get into a group of 2 or 3


● Students will warm up their passing by having one partner
toss the ball to the other and they will perform 5 forearm
passes and then switch roles
● After that, students will perform 5 sets each
● After they have each completed the 5 forearm passes and
sets, students can pepper with their partners
10 min
● The goal is to make as many consecutive passes as
possible in a row, set or forearm passes, without dropping
the ball
● After students warm up their passing, have students sit on
the ground and work on passing the ball accurately while
sitting

Transition Water Break 5 min


Sitting Volleyball ● Using the badminton nets  25 min
● Students will get into teams of 5 or 6
● Grade 9s: 3-4 teams
● Grade 8s: 6 teams
● Grade 7s: 2-3 teams
● While rallying the ball, each team is allowed a maximum
of 3 touches of the ball, then must volley the ball to the
other side by either hitting, setting, or forearm passing it
over the net
● Both hands can be used to move the body, but the bottom
must remain in contact with the floor before making
contact with the ball
● Team players rotate clockwise after scoring a point  
● If your team is scored on your team is off - Using a queens
court system where the team that scores stays on
● A team waiting on the sidelines gets to go on and start
play with a serve
● Students are allowed to block a hit or pass over the net

Modifications:

● Use a beach ball to start - progress into a volleyball if they


can get a rally going
● Adjust starting positions as necessary - Move front row
closer to the net
● Allow 1 bounce
● Allow 1 bounce after each hit

Conclusion Time
● Have students put all the volleyballs away
● Gather them at the whiteboard
● Discuss the differences between standing and sitting volleyball
● What’s easier? More difficult? How did you have to adjust? 7 min
● Students get changed and wait for the bell to leave
● Badminton nets can be left up for next class
