Forearm Passing Explanation - 5 Minutes


● Gather students infront of the white board
● Review the proper forearm passing technique
● Bent knees - Ready position
● Closed fist, hold your own hand, thumbs
together
● Extend your arms, trying to touch your elbows
together (no basket hoop)
● Point your shoulders to your target
● Try to make contact with the ball on your
forearms
● As you make contact, slowly stand up

3 Partner Passing - 10 Minutes


● Have students get into groups of three with
only 1 volleyball player per group
● One partner is the passer, one is the target, and
one is the tosser
● The tosser throws the ball above the passers
head who forearm passes the ball to the target
● The two people who are not passing will
provide feedback to the person passing based
on the key points
● Passer will make 5 passes before switching
roles
● Target becomes the tosser, tosser becomes the
passer, and passer becomes the target

Water Break and Transition - 5 Minutes

20 Point Passing Game - 10 minutes


● Students get into groups of 4 Grade 9s and 7s
and 5 Grade 8s
● Standing on opposite sides of the volleyball
court sidelines (2 and 2)
● The side closest to the wall starts with the ball
● They must toss the ball to the person on the
other side who must make a forearm pass
● 2 points can be scored: 1 if the pass goes over
the targets head, and 1 if the target doesn’t
have to move to catch the ball
● After making a pass, the player must run and
touch the wall before joining the line
● First group to 20 wins

Conclusion - 7 minutes before the end of class


● Have students put all of the volleyballs away
● Gather them at the whiteboard
● Review the steps to performing a proper
forearm pass
● Students get changed and wait for bell to leave

Setting Explanation - 5 Minutes


● Gather students infront of the white board
● Review the proper setting technique
● Bent knees - Ready position
● Get underneath of the ball and point your
shoulders towards your target
● Create a triangle with your index fingers and
thumbs and place it directly above your
forehead
● Using your fingertips, set the ball when it is
about 4-6 inches above your forehead
● Follow through by extending your elbows
pushing upwards and straightening your wrists
● Highlight that grade 9’s are being assessed
on this

Serving Explanation - 5 Minutes


● Underhand Checklist (4/4):
● The student holds the ball in their non-
dominant hand
● The student uses an open or closed fist and hits
it out of their hand
● The student takes a step with their non-
dominant foot
● The student can accurately serve the ball into
the court
● Overhand Checklist (4/4)
● The student fully extends their dominante arm
when making contact with the ball
● The student uses a flat, strong hand to make
contact with the ball
● The student takes a strong step with their non-
dominant leg
● The student can accurately serve the ball into
the court
● Highlight that grade 8’s and 7’s are being
assessed on this

Partner Serving - 10 Minutes


● Students will get a partner and one volleyball
● Students will stand on opposite sides of the
volleyball court endlines
● One partner will have the ball and serve the
ball to the other side of the net where their
partner will grab the ball and serve back
● After warming up for ~5 minutes
● Set a 5 minute timer and have partners
compete to see how many serves they can
consecutively make over the net

Monkey in a Barrel - 20 Minutes


● Keep students on the same side of the net they
are on and tell them they are now a team
● One person from each team goes and sits on
the other side of the court
● One player from each team will now serve to
the other side of the net aiming for the player
sitting down
● If the player catches it, the person that served
runs to the other side of the net and can now
sit down anywhere
● If they don’t catch it the server stays on their
side of the net
● The goal is to get all of their players on to the
other side

Conclusion - 7 minutes before the end of class

Sitting Volleyball - 35 Minutes


● Using the badminton nets Students will
● Students will get into teams of 4 have their heads
● The bottom must remain in contact with the level with the net
floor at all times (one cheek)
● While rallying the ball, each team is allowed a
maximum of 3 touches of the ball, then
must volley the ball to the other side
● Both hands can be used to move the
body, but the bottom must remain in
contact with the floor before striking the ball
● Team players rotate clockwise after scoring a
point
● If your team is scored on your team is off and
walk over to the other court
● A team waiting on the sidelines gets to go on
and start play with a serve

● Have students put all of the volleyballs away

● Discuss the differences between sitting and
standing volleyball

Two Touch Tennis - 15 Minutes


● Students will get into partners
● The partners will be split and start on either
ends of the volleyball courts
● Two groups will start in the court
● The drill will start with the teacher throwing a
ball to one partner who will set it to their
partner
● The second touch must be set over the net to
the other group who will set it to the other
partner and then set it back over
● After you pass the ball over the net, you run
around the outside of the court and join the
back of the line
● The goal is too keep a consecutive pass going
the whole time

Water Break and Transition - 5 Minutes

Wash Volleyball - 15 Minutes


● Students get into groups of 3
● On both sides of the net, one group starts in
the front row and one starts in the back row
● The team furthest from the stage will serve the
ball to the other side of the net (if serving is
not going well, I will throw free balls)
● When the ball hits the ground: back row to
front row, front row to other side of the net,
front row to back row, back row to back of
line at other side

Conclusion - 7 minutes before the end of class


● Have students put all of the volleyballs away

Nitro Volleyball - 35 Minutes


● Students will get into teams of 4-6 Students will
● The server must underhand serve the ball over have their heads

ball bounces off the floor–the only exception
is the serve.

● Requires more than three hits to get the ball
over the net.

● The team that scores a point gets to serve next.
● Teams rotate one player clockwise if the other
team served last.

they get to get up and go serve
● If no one touches it before it hits the ground no

● The goal is to free all of their players

Water Break and Transition - 5 Minutes

4 Square Volleyball - 15 Minutes


● Have 6 groups of 5 players
● Play begins with one player serving from
his/her corner.
● The serve can be to any of the other three
players.
● Each player gets one attempt to set or bump
the ball to another player without the ball
hitting the ground.
● If the player misses or hits the ball out of
bounds then they move to the end of the line
and players move up the square as needed
● Play re-starts with a serve

● Discuss the strategies used to get someone out
in 4 square volleyball
