Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of this study, the following terms are operationally defined.

Activated Carbon. Charcoal that has been heated or otherwise treated to increase its adsorptive power.

Water Pollution. Contamination of water bodies.

Carbonaceous materials. Materials that relating to or consisting of or yielding carbon.

Adsorbent. Capable of adhesion of molecules of gas, liquid, or dissolved solids to a surface.

Contaminant. Something that makes a place or a substance no longer suitable for use.

Wastewater Treatment. A process used to convert wastewater which is water no longer needed or suitable
for its most recent use into an effluent that can be either returned to the water cycle with minimal
environmental issues or reused.

Leachate. A liquid that passes through a landfill and has extracted dissolved and suspended matter from it.

Ion Exchange. Exchange of ions between two electrolytes or between an electrolyte solution and a
complex.

Oxidation. Loss of electrons

Carbonize. Convert into carbon, typically by heating or burning, or during fossilization.
