Background Research Plan Worksheet

for an Engineering Design Project

Name: Layaalin Mutmainah

1. Define the problem you intend to solve. [Who] need(s) [what] because [why]:
Local people, BNPB, firefighter Ungaran, and related people need UAV because the area around Ungaran Mountain has the potential for fires.

2. List the keywords and phrases from your problem and the topic in general. (Hint: Use an encyclopedia to help you.)
- UAV - Ungaran Mountain - Potential Area - Sensor
- Local people - Fire - Smoke - etc

3. Now use your keywords to build some questions to guide your background research. Develop at least two or three from each “question
word.” Don’t worry about whether you already know the answer to the question—you’ll find the answers when you do your background
research. And don’t forget to “network” with knowledgeable adults who can help guide you toward good materials!

Question Possible Questions (you can think of Substitute your keywords (or variations of your keywords) for
Area others) the blanks in the previous column. Write down the relevant
questions, and use them to guide your background research.
Who needs UAV? Local people, National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB),
etc.
Who wants UAV? People who want to prevent fires and know the vulnerable
conditions in the area around Ungaran Montain.
What does my target user need or want in a My target user wants the UAV to run effectively without any
UAV? problems and in accordance with the function and purpose of
monitoring and preventing fires in the Ungaran Mountain areas.
How much would my target user be willing to If when checking the UAV is running well, then many targets agree
pay for a UAV? with paying for the UAV. If over time, UAVs become more
effective and efficient, then the use of UAVs will be extended and
there will be more and more targets willing to pay for UAVs.
Conversely, if the UAV is not working properly, the target will stop
using the UAV as a fire handling and even the target will ask for
compensation.

What size should I make UAV for my target The size of the UAV is not too big, with a length and width of 2
user? meters, the UAV can also be detached into 2 parts so that it
becomes smaller and can be controlled into 2. The UAV weighs
around 40kg.
How does UAV work? UAV works to monitor over the area, by being flown in the air so
that it can reach and monitor many areas in Ungaran Mountain.
UAVs are operated by operators and assisted with various features
such as GPS to detect locations, infrared sensors, smoke sensors and
other sensors to detect fire signs.
What are the different parts of a UAV? The UAV used to monitor fires in the Ungaran Mountain area is
given a fire detection feature. If there are signs of smoke or other
signs of fire, the UAV will give a notification. In addition, the UAV
used to monitor fires in the Ungaran Mountain area can be
connected to a water hose for a high place. The UAV also has a
spray power of 100 liters per minute and capable of lifting loads of
up to 145kg. UAVs can fly in tight spaces, avoid obstacles, and also
fly long distances.
How is performance measured for a If the UAV can work efficiently, there are no problems, and it
UAV?
doesn't cause problems for the surrounding environment, then the
UAV has a fairly good performance. If there are signs of a fire and
the UAV can quickly deal with and prevent it, the UAV
performance is very good.

Where does UAV get used? In an open space. Such as fields, over forest, around mountain, etc.
But here we use for the area around Ungaran Mountain.
What is UAV made of? Like drones in general. UAV materials use metal and are equipped
with cameras, sensors, GPS, infrared, radio transmitters and
receivers, speed controllers, and other supporting tools.
What is the best material, component, or The best material and component of the UAV is the metal material
algorithm for building AUV?
of the UAV can be 2 parts with different controllers, the sensors on
the UAV can also detect various signs of fire, the UAV can avoid
fire obstacles because there are fire sensor components and heat
sensors, the algorithm of UAV is made with 3 levels, level 1 is
when small signs appear but can still be prevented by light action,
level 2 shows signs that are quite big and must be overcome with
considerable action, level 3 occurs when a fire occurs and its
prevention is quite complex.

4. Ask questions to help you understand products or programs that fill similar needs to the need you identified:
 What products fill a similar need?
UAV for fire detection.

 What are the strengths and weaknesses of products that fill a similar need?
Strengths : has many important features, able to overcome obstacles, able to pass through narrow places, can be controlled remotely, can be 2
parts and different controlled, etc.
Weaknesses : heavy, need people to control.

 What are the key, must-have features of products that fill a similar need?
Has many supporting sensors, camera, energy efficient, and has ability to fly far and high.

 Why did the engineers that built products that fill a similar need design them the way they did?
To monitor the area around Ungaran Mountain, its quite difficult if use a tool with a large size. So it use a UAV with 2 parts. During the heavy
handling process, UAV can be separated and combined. Various sensors and control components are also adapted to the mountain area.

 How can I measure my design's improvement over existing designs?

By adding innovations and updates to UAV that will made according to the conditions of the Ungaran Mountain area and can work efficiently.
