INTRODUCTION

Chapter 1

1.1 Purpose and Motivation

The main objective of the project is to create an online book store that allows users
to search and purchase a book based on title, author and subject. The selected books are
displayed in a tabular format and the user can order their books online through credit card
payment. The Administrator will have additional functionalities when compared to the
common user.
Books are one of the foundations of human society. Their proliferation across the
world marked the onset of mass communication and education. Although advances were
continually made in their materials, their printing processes, and the businesses behind
them, the basic bound format has remained essentially unchanged since antiquity. The
book has undergone a massive transformation in a process that began in the 1970s but has
just recently gained a strong momentum. Alongside the paper model emerged something
entirely different: the electronic book, or “e-book”. Using online book store project
the user can purchase books online instead of going out to a book store. The purpose of the
project is to make a full functional online book store system that allow its users to buy
book via internet. The selected books will be displayed in tabular form and then user can
pick and order one or more books online through cash on delivery option. The online book
store project provides customers with online shopping facility through a web browser. The
objective of the project is to develop a basic website where a consumer is provided with a
shopping cart application and also to know about the technologies used to develop such an
application. All the information of the books changes is given to the user and also the
reports are also generated according to the requirement of the user. The Bookshop
Management System automates all operations in a bookshop. Generally it includes the
Order Processing, Stock Management and Accounts Management before managing a
bookshop understand the concept of automation. In automation of any operation we make
a system which do work automatically as the respective events occurs, for which it is
meant. Here the system is providing the automation on the any type of the bookshop. That
means a shop which has the type of system which provides the facility to the customers of
the shop to purchase the books from the shop without any complexity. For example any
customer want to purchase any book from the shop then first of all customer just choose.

1.2 Abstract

Today it is becoming very difficult to maintain records manually. Software system

easily does the job of maintaining daily records as well as the transaction according to the
user requirements. Only basic knowledge of computers is required for operations. The
main objective of the project is to create an online book store that allows users to search
and purchase book online based on title, author and subject. The proposed system provides
lots of facility to the user to store information of the books and it provide information in
quick time in a systematic manner. The processing time on the data is very fast. All the
information of books changes is given to the user and also the reports are also generated
according to requirement of the user. Using this website the user can purchase a book
online rather than of going out to a book store and wasting time.

The motivation to create this project has many sources.

 Interest to develop a good user friendly website with many online

transactions using a database.
 To increase my knowledge horizon in technologies like .NET, SQL, CSS, HTML.

 To gain good experience in .NET before joining in a full time job.

 To gain expertise using Data Grid, Data Set, Data Table, Data Adapter and Data Readers.

1.3 Project Overview

1.3.1 Background

There are many online book stores like Powell’s, Amazon which were designed
using Html. I want to develop a similar website using .NET, SQL Server.
Online Book store is an online web application where the customer can purchase books
online. Through a web browser the customers can search for a book by its title or author,
later can add to the shopping cart and finally purchase using credit card transaction. The
user can login using his account details or new customers can set up an account very
quickly. They should give the details of their name, contact number and shipping address.
The user can also give feedback to a book by giving ratings on a score of five. The books
are divided into many categories based on subject Like Software, Database, English,
Architecture etc.

1.4 This project has the following functionalities:

1) A Home page with product catalogue

This is the page where the user will be navigated after a successful login. It will display all
the book categories and will have a search keyword option to search for the required book.
It also includes some special sections like recommended titles, weekly special books.

2) Search

A search by keyword option is provided to the user using a textbox The keyword to be
entered should be the book title.

3) Advanced Search

Advanced search helps the user to search for a book based on Title, Author, Category and
price range. All the books which match the particular search criteria and their total count
will be displayed .From here the user can select a book and add to the shopping cart.

4) Book Description

If the user would like to know details about a book he can click on the title from where he
will be directed to a Book description page. It includes the notes on the book content and
also a link to Amazon.com to get the book review.
5

5) Shopping Cart

The user can manage a shopping cart which will include all the books he selected. The
user can edit, delete and update his shopping cart. A final shopping cart summary is
displayed which includes all the items the user selected and the final total cost.

6) Managing user accounts

Each user should have an account to access all the functionalities of website. User can
login using login page and logout using the logout page. All the user sessions will be
saved in the database.

1.5 Advantages and Disadvantages of Online and Offline Bookstores

The significant increase in popularity of online bookstores over the past decade is due to
the comfort and convenience it brings. Browsing book titles will lead you to the best
retailers who offer the best deals at amazingly low prices. On the contrary, offline or
“physical” bookstores can take advantage of their nature by hosting events such as book
Signings which draw huge crowds at any given time. Ultimately, for some readers,
readinga book is about the whole experience – the touch and feel of the book make it
more pleasurable.

So, where do your loyalties reside? ChatE-books lays down the pros and cons of each
while you ponder your response.
6

1.6 Advantages of Online Bookstores

Of the many motivations to buy of books online, these are the standouts:

1. Online stores are cheap. Because they do not incur the costs that brick and mortar
ventures have to deal with (such as rent), they can pass these savings onto the
consumer.
2. Online shopping is very convenient. Not only do they make physical travel to the actual
store unnecessary, but online bookstores simplify the process of searching for the books
you want via comprehensive search engines.
3. Online stores are not limited by space and therefore can provide an infinite amount of
books to select from.
4. Online bookstores simplify access. They allow individuals from all over the world to
make purchases of the books they desire.
5. Online stores allow both authors and consumers the opportunity to view feedback from
previous customers. This feedback can prove essential to readers who might be looking for
recommendations to guide them in their purchase.

1.7 Disadvantages of Online Stores

For all the benefits they bring to the table, online stores are not without their faults. By
choosing to buy books online, you will encounter the following complications:

1. As with most online transactions, you need a lot of trust to use online bookstores. Because
you cannot see and touch the books you are buying, you cannot guarantee that what you
saw on the website is what will be delivered to you.
2. When you buy books online, you don’t receive any personalized service. This may not be
much of a deterrent for most, but some people enjoy having direct access to a store rep for
answering questions or for assistance in their browsing efforts.
3. By choosing to buy books online, you are also choosing to accept the risks of fraud.
Fraud is a big problem plaguing transactions across the internet. While you can always
take measures to protect your finances, there is no way to completely remove fraud from
the equation.
4. Though the actual books purchased from an online store may be cheaper, you oftentimes
have to deal with high shipping costs.
7

5. Returns are very problematic when you buy books online. The return policies of online
stores can make the process either impossible or more costly than you are willing to
accept.

1.8 Advantages of Offline Stores

The following are advantages to running down to a traditional bookstore to meet

yourdemand for literature:

1. Why buy books online when you can enjoy them instantly? Brick and Mortar stores
allow you instant access to touch, smell and thumb through books to gage immediately
if you want to buy.
2. Traditional stores create a sense of community. They create a space where
bookworms can congregate and share their love of books. It is within local bookstores
that so many readings by famous authors have been done.
3. Offline stores do not alienate customers who do not have internet access. They
can serve any and every customer who has money to spend.
4. Offline stores have the ability to cater to local audiences. They can accomplish this by
stocking their store based on the unique requirements of the local population.

1.9 Disadvantages of Offline Bookstores

Critics of traditional bookstores often cite these cons as reasons why such establishments
are becoming obsolete:
1. Offline stores can be quite pricey. Because of their costly overheard, they tend to
charge a lot more money for their books than online bookstores.
2. Offline stores have a very limited stock. They only provide as many books as they can
store within the physical space available to them.
3. Brick and Mortar stores are not always easy to access. If you cannot travel to the
physical location of your favorite bookshop, there are no options to acquire the books you
desire.
4. Offline stores are restricted by time. While you can browse for books and make
purchases whenever you want on the internet, offline stores have an opening and closing
time.
8

5. Without prior research, purchasing a book from an offline store requires trust. In the
absence of book reviews, simply thumbing through the pages cannot give you a thorough
picture of the quality of a book.
6. A lot of people are determined to hold onto their love for offline stores because of all
the memories they have built over the years and decades. Others enjoy the conveniences
that today’s world of online purchases afford. Whether you choose to buy books online or
make your way to your local bookstore usually comes down to personal preferences.
What’s yours?

1.12 What are the categories in a bookstore?

Almost every store has three main categories of books in different locations on the sales
floor– Nonfiction, Fiction, and Children’s. You will then find those sections of the
bookstore divided into sub-categories, and then within those sub-categories will be more
specific micro-categories. Many visitors to a bookstore always head to one part of the
store, knowing that the books they usually like to read are in that area. Last time, we
Journeyed down the various aisles of the Nonfiction section. Now, let’s browse
throughthe Fiction shelves.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
15
Chapter II
2. Introduction

A literature review is a type of review article. A literature review is a scholarly

paper, whichincludes the current knowledge including substantive findings, as well as
theoretical and methodological contribution to a particular topic. Literature review are
secondary source, do not report new or original experimental work. Literature reviews are
a basis for research in nearly every academic field.
A literature review is a type of academic writing that provides an overview of
existing knowledge in a particular field of research.
Whether the literature review is short or extended, similar structural and linguistic
features apply.

2.1 What is a Literature Review?

A literature review is the writing process of summarizing, synthesizing and/or critiquing the
literature found as a result of a literature search. It may be used as background or context for a
primary research project.
or
The literature review is a written overview of major writings and other sources on a selected
topic. Sources covered in the review may include scholarly journal articles, books,
government reports, Web sites, etc. The literature review provides a description, summary and
evaluation of each source.

There are several reasons to review the literature:

2.2) Need of Literature Review in Research:

The Purpose of a Literature Review is To:

• Provide foundation of knowledge on topic
• Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication and give credit to other
researchers
• Identify inconstancies: gaps in research, conflicts in previous studies, open questions
left from other research.
• Identify need for additional research (justifying your research)
• Identify the relationship of works in context of its contribution to the topic and to other
Works.
16
• Place your own research within the context of existing literature making a case for why
further study is needed.
• Identifies areas of prior scholarship.
• Places each source in the context of its contribution to the understanding of the specific
issue, area of research, or theory under review.
• Describes the relationship of each source to the others that you have selected.
• Identifies new ways to interpret, and shed light on any gaps in, previous research.
• Points the way forward for further research.

Literature Review

2.3 Following research papers/articles/books/ are reviewed by researcher.

2.3.1) Ms. Pragati Bagmare in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on our
society which is publish in International Journal for Research in Applied Science
& Engineering Technology (IJRASET).
International journal of innovative research in technology explained that.

E-Commerce The increasing significance of e-commerce is evident in the study conducted

by researchers at the GVU Centre at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In their summary
of the findings from the eighth survey, the researchers report that “e-commerce is taking off
both in terms of the number of users shopping as well as the total amount people are
spending via online based transactions”. Electronic Commerce applications support the
interaction between different parties involved in a e-commerce transaction via the network,
as well as the management of the data involved in the process. Over three quarters of the
10,000 respondents report having purchased item through internet. The most mentioned
reason for using the web for personal shopping was 1) Convenience(68%) 2) Followed by
availability of vendor information (60%) 3) No pressure from sales person (55%) 4) Saving
time (53%)
17
2.3.2) Ms. Priya Bisen in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on our
society which is publish in International Journal for Research in Applied Science

Book shop Management System is an attempt to overcome the present in efficient and
time consuming process of locating, reserving and purchasing quality reading materials
available in the store. Through automated book store solution, provide an easy way of the
searching, reserving and purchasing of books. It’s worth analyzing and identifying
benefits as it would directly influence the productivity of the store. It provides required
data quickly to the user and also in specified manner to the user. This software can be
easily implementedunder various situations. Any education institute can make use of it for
providing information about author, content of the available books in their library.
18

2.3.3) Prathamesh Muzumdar in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on
our society which is publish in A new trend in textbook sales management for services
marketing
The traditional approach is the approach which is preferred by consumer who emphasizes
more on instant acquisition of the book rather than price. The traditional approach is also
seen to be the most preferred method advised by the school advisor during the enrollment
into the program. The traditional approach is divided into two different types the on campus
bookstore and the off campus bookstore. The survey in the study by Krey indicates that
64.2% students purchased their textbooks through on campus bookstores, while as only
21.3% purchased it through off campus stores (Krey et al., 2009).

2.3.4) Prathamesh Muzumdar in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on
our society which is publish in A new trend in textbook sales management for services
marketing
The study by Krey tells us that 97% universities have on campus bookstores (Krey et al.,
2009). Only 3 % universities in United States of America don’t have on campus bookstores
their students use school library, public library and off campus bookstore as the source of
purchasing or renting the textbook. On campus bookstore is also the most reliable and
easiest accessible way for student to buy the textbook. It becomes more reliable than any
other source because it is operated by school even if it is subsidized to a third party retailer.
Third party retailers are the ones who sell products to consumer after buying them directly
from manufacturer, retailer or other consumer. On campus bookstores set their own price.
This price is not negotiable and there exists no price comparison for same product. The price
is decided by third party retailer himself. On campus bookstore can be monopolistic market
if there exists no off campus bookstore
19

2.3.5) Bako’s, J. Y. in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on our society

which is publish in The University Of Taxes At Arlington.

The second type of primary transaction that occurs is B2C between retailer and consumer
(student), the retailer involved in this transaction also acts as buyer in the secondary
transaction. There are many retailers available who offer lower prices for stock clearance
etc. The secondary transactions that are involved in sales of old textbooks are B2C and C2B.
The B2C transaction takes place between a publisher and consumer (student or retailer) for a
new book which is then resold as a used book by the consumer who then acts like a seller.
The C2B transaction takes place between the consumer (student or retailer) and retailer. The
retailer then gets involved in B2C transaction to resale the book. The dominating factor in
these transactions is seen as price, drop in price takes place as the book goes from new sale
into used sale transaction. The most benefitted is the consumer (student) who occurs in the
last phase of transaction. Overall the model tries to interpret the transactions taking place in
online retail medium sales, and incorporates influence of advantages on each transaction
taking place

2.3.6) Carbaugh, R., & Ghosh, K. in the research paper an Impact of online book
selling

on our society which is publish in The University Of Taxas At Arlington.

The biggest disadvantage that the medium of on and off campus retail sales faces is that
of main source transaction which indirectly effects the price of textbook. A fixed price is
placed for a particular textbook, which completely eliminates the factor of price
comparisons and low prices. Student sensitive towards price usually don’t prefer opting
fixed price bookstore unless and until lead time is of great concern. With respect to sales of
new textbook the transactions that occur are B2C as main source transaction and B2B as
primary transaction. B2B transactions occur between store and seller who is a publisher or
retailer. In this transaction the price of the book rises way above the retail or publisher
price.
20

2.3.7) Carlson, S. in the research paper an Impact of online book selling on our society

which is publish in The University Of Taxas At Arlington.

Amazon and eBay in last five years have started using direct checkout methods as
alternative to sign up accounts, where direct check out method doesn’t require a person to
feed in and save their account and credit card information (Yang, Zielinski and Cheng,
2009). Also third party online payment and money transfer websites like Paypal act as third
party firms for money transfers. Paypal started in 1998 and currently acquired by eBay runs
as the most trusted third party money transfer service around the globe. Both the methods
try to solve the concern of data theft with respect to account information of consumers.
Overall it can be concluded that use of online retail sales is preferred by the people who are
price sensitive. Price sensitivity is seen directly proportional to the resale of used textbooks.
The price is the one of the factors which is seen highly influential between both seller and
consumer. Consumers like to take the advantage of low price, while as sellers like to have
price flexibility. The tool of price comparison acts to be the most beneficial asset that the
online retailing website has over other medium. For consumer search engines, add to cart
and “check out as guest” are other few advantages, but for sellers it is direct transaction with
consumer, online money transfers, bundling products. Overall it is precise that with the
increase in knowledge regarding online purchase, the sales of online textbooks has also
increased.

There are various methods of getting a textbook. These methods are broadly categorized
into purchase, rent and sharing. Sharing even if categorized as a purchase still limits the
sales by reducing the number of buyers. Purchase can be done through on campus
bookstore, off campus bookstore and online retail. Renting can be done on campus, off
campus and online. The study here deals mainly with purchase and resale through the
medium of on campus and off campus bookstore and online retail.

Architectural design and principles. The philosophies and implementation details are
changing as the people guiding the development of the application. In this fantastic and yet
sometimes complex world of software development there are some tried and true
architecture patterns and software development guidelines employed by most architects.
Also your design must have an ability to turn towards innovation instead of lending itself to
common practices. Web services are one such area where architects must lean on their
creative side and hope that their solutions are still successful. In this report, we will explain
an exciting voyage down the road of Web services application.

The objective of this project is to develop an e- bookstore where books can be bought
from the comfort of home through the Internet. An online bookstore is a virtual store on the
Internet where customers can browse the catalog and select books of interest. The selected
books may be collected in a shopping cart. At checkout time, the items in the shopping cart
will be presented as an order. At that time, more information will be needed to complete the
transaction. Usually, the customer will be asked to fill or select a billing address, a shipping
address, a shipping option, and payment information such as credit card number.

of CSE in fulfilment of the requirements For the Degree of Higher Diploma in CSE.
The main objective of the project is to create an online book store that allows users to
search and purchase a book online based on title, author and subject. The users can order
their books online through credit card payment. Using this Website the user can purchase a
book online instead of going out to a book store and wasting time. There are many online
book stores like Powell’s, Amazon which were designed using Html. We developed a
similar website using PHP, HTML, JavaScript, JQuery and MySQL. Online Book store is
an online web application where the customer can purchase books online. Through a web
browser the customers can search for a book by its title or author, later can add to the
shopping cart and finally purchase using credit card transaction. The user can login using
his/her account details or new customers can set up an account very quickly. They should
give the details of their name, contact number. The books are divided into many categories
based on subject like Engineering, Scientific, Medical, History and Novel etc. The Online
Book Store Website provides customers with online shopping through a web browser. A
customer can, create, sign in to his/her account, place items into a shopping cart and
purchase using his/her credit card details. The Administrator will have additional
functionalities when compared to the common user. He can add, delete and update the book
details, book categories, member information and also confirm a placed order.

The reason why we selected online Bookstore web service is everybody walking down
the street has some idea about bookstores. The objective of this project is to develop an e-
book store where books can be bought from the comfort of home through the Internet. An
online book store is a virtual store on the Internet where customers can browse the catalog
and select books of interest. The selected books may be collected in a shopping cart. At
checkout time, the items in the shopping cart will be presented as an order. At that time,
more information will be needed to complete the transaction. Usually, the customer will be
asked to fill or select a billing address, a shipping address, a shipping option, and payment
information such as credit card number. An e- mail notification is sent to the customer as
soon as the order is placed.

Online product reviews is an important advantage for consumers of experien
Ce goods in online marketplaces and act as a useful source of information during
of a good. Furthermore in some online marketplaces consumers have the opportunity
to evaluate how helpful a review was by using a binary evaluation interface provi
ded by the online marketplace. This results to the usefulness score of a review which
is calculated as a fraction of helpful votes over the total votes that this review has
nreceived. Our early results indicate that the usefulness score of a particular review is
maffected in a significant way by the qualitative characteristics of the review
as measured by readability tests applied to a large dataset of reviews collected
from the UK section of the popular online marketplace Amazon .
