It describes in detail how to execute each test from an aircraft and/or system bench. The available self-tests within the IC-500 DGC include Power-up Test, Continuous Test, the In-Air Initiated Test (weight off wheels), the On-Ground-Initiated Test {weight on wheels (WOW)}, and the Maintenance Test Mode. How This Manual Is Organized This manual is organized into the following three sections: Section 1 - IC-500 Self Test This section describes the self-test capabilities of the IC-500 Display Guidance Computer (DGC). It describes in detail how to execute each test from an aircraft and/or system bench. The available self-tests within the IC-500 DGC include the In-Air Initiated Test (weight off wheels) and the On-Ground Initiated Test (weight on wheels). Section 2 - Event Codes This section describes event codes page, how to access it and retrieve event codes for troubleshooting purposes. It contains a listing of event codes that can be displayed on the event codes page along with the common event codes observed and possible causes. An event code report form is also included for your convenience. Section 3 - Ground Test Procedure This section serves as a general guideline for performing functional tests on the SPZ-5000 system. 22-05-25 Rxivorese Use or disclosure of information on this page is subject to the restrictions on the title page of this document Honeywell SYSTEM TEST AND FAULT ISOLATION MANUAL CitationJet Troubleshooting Digital Avionics Maintenance of digital flight control systems requires a different approach than that of analog systems. Understanding key differences allows crew members, as well as maintenance personnel, to effectively operate and maintain the digital-based system. Control law functions, ‘once accomplished with devices such as resistors, capacitors, coils, and op-amps, are now programmed with processors. These processors achieve the same functions, and much more, through a computer language code that performs the intended function. The following highlights many of the differences between analog and digital systems: ‘+ Digital fight control systems perform the same tasks day-in and day-out with identical results. * Analog systems are subject to component degradation as ‘outcome of the circuit's tunction. 1e passes, which can influence the + Self test of a digital system is a straight forward program check during power application, as well as during actual operation. ‘+ Self test of an analog system is very complicated, typically involving injection of signals and measurement of their effect. Therefore, most analog systems are not equipped with a self test. + Analog systems rarely diagnose the cause of a fault or intermittent event. ‘Digital systems produce event codes that help to determine fault location. ‘+ Extremes in temperature generally adversely affect analog components, while digital processors are less likely to be affected, Generally speaking, the nature of a digital system is; “it either works or it doesn't. There are no intermediate stages. An analog system, on the other hand, can have many in-between stages, that can lead to severe contusion. For example, a digital system's ALT SEL (altitude select) mode operates the same today as it did yesterday, providing pertinent external sensor data is accurate. An analog system, as time passes, can introduce variations regarding mode performance even if its external sensors have not changed. In a digital system, it is more likely to have an external sensor problem (j.e., DADC, gyros, accelerometers, NAV radio/DME), than it is to have a problem with the IC-500 Display Guidance Computer (DGC). The IC-500 DGC performs extensive self testing and continuous monitoring, which positively affects maintainability and reliability. Adopting a digital mind set results in a proper, timely, cost effective and maintained digital light control system-equipped aircraft. Overpowering Control Surfaces with Autopilot (AP) and/or Yaw Damper (YD) Engaged Restraining or overpowering either Pitch, Roll, or Yaw servos, results in a monitor trip followed by an AP/YD disconnect. Digital autopilots incorporate performance monitors that continually compare servo commands to servo responses. For example, when a servo command is issued, the monitor ensures the servo is moving in the proper direction and at the proper rate. When crew members attempt to assist the AP/YD, the performance monitors sense an improper servo response and disconnect the AP/YD. 4.2 AP Disconnect Switch Function To Reset a Failure The AP disconnect switch is control wheel mounted, and when pushed, disconnects the autopilot. This switch is also used to reset monitor induced AP disconnects. If the AP disconnects because ‘a monitor in the pitch, roll or yaw axis senses control pressure (i.e., a pilot's feet on the rudder when the YD tries to execute a YD function) the AP FAIL message is displayed on the EADI. To reactivate the AP, the pilot pushes the AP disconnect switch for two seconds to reset the monitors and the AP can then be re-engaged. 4.3. Autopilot/Yaw Damper Disconnects with no Event Codes Logged If an unintentional autopilot (AP) and/or yaw damper (YD) disconnect occurs without an event code (EC) being stored in the IC-500 DGC, the disconnect can be attributed to a normal event. A normal event is one in which the autopilot computer function in the IC-500 DGC received a normal request to disconnect. A normal request includes the following: + Control wheel AP disconnect switch - Faulty switches, splices, or wiring can cause this signal to open up, thus resulting in the disconnect. ‘+ Pitch trim switch input - Faulty trim switches, connectors, or wiring can result in the IC-500 DGC receiving a trim request that by design disconnects the autopilot. Also, an inadvertent activation of the trim switch results in an autopilot disconnect. ‘AP or YD engage pushbuttons located on the autopilot controller are inadvertently being pushed or are intermittent in operation. Other conditions that cause a disconnect without an event code being stored are as follows + Low power sensed by the IC-500 DGC due to faulty wiring or circuit breaker. * Poor grounds to the IC-500 DGC. ‘+ Shorts to ground of the 28 volt clutch engage lines from the IC-500 DGC to the servos. If crew reports of disconnects cannot be substantiated with the finding of an event code, the items listed above require investigation. NOTE: AP/YD disconnects, due to the items listed above, do not result in an AP FAIL message posted in the lower right corner of the EADI. 5. Event Codes Listing There are two categories of IC-500 DGC events and associated, as follows: Page 2-5 22-05-25 April 20/1998 estrichons on the hile page of this document Use or disclosure of information on this page is subject to Honeywell SYSTEM TEST AND FAULT ISOLATION MANUAL CitationJet ‘+ Power-up events - These result in a latched event, identified as event codes 0001 - 0199 (Table 2-2, Table 2 - 3) and all S0XX event codes (Table 2 - 7). To reset this latched event the 28 V de circuit breaker must be cycled off/on. ‘+ Continuous monitored events - These result in AP/YD disengage with associated event codes O2KX (Table 2 - 4) and event codes 91XX (Table 2 - 8). If one of these monitors trips, such as in overpowering the autopilot, (codes 0221 pitch, 0222 roll, or 0223 yaw), and the AP FAIL annunciation is displayed on the EADI, the failure can be reset by holding down the RED AP. disconnect control wheel button for 2 seconds. Resetting the IC-500 DGC circuit breaker also resets the computer, however, the preferred method is the AP disconnect button. Not all of the 02XX or 91XX codes result in the AP failing. They can only result in the AP disconnecting, for example, a primary VG pitch event, code 0207. Event codes 207, 208, 209, 210, 215, and 217 can be caused by an intermittent inverter or loss of inverter sync. Contact your Citation Service Center for assistance with inverter problems. Event codes 03XX (Table 2 - 5) and 04XX (Table 2 - 6) are codes that are logged but do not Prevent AP engagement. These event codes are related to the EFIS display section of the IC-500 Dac. During the power-up test, the IC-500 DGC sends commands to the SM-200 servo motor and compares the servo tach electrical response to an internal lookup table. If there is a significant difference between the two, an event code is stored (0028-0067 or 0103-0108). If these codes repeat 3 times or more, suspect a servo interface problem. Check IC-500 DGC to servo wiring and servo motoritach resistance. NotI Itis important to note that at no time should maintenance personnel attempt to replace a Honeywell LRU based on event codes alone. In most cases, the event codes should be used as a tool along with traditional ground test methods and other standard maintenance practices.
