Activity 5
Transcultural Nursing Across the Lifespan
Transcultural Perspective in Childbearing

In light of global population shifts that are likely to continue for years to come, cultural beliefs regarding
childbearing and childrearing need to be examined to enable nurses to offer our patients culturally congruent care
throughout their pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum.
Learning Objectives
1. Analyze how culture influences the beliefs and behaviors of the childbearing woman and her family during
pregnancy.
2. Recognize the childbearing beliefs and practices of diverse cultures.
3. Examine the needs of women making alternative lifestyle choices regarding
childbirth and child rearing.
4. Explore how cultural ideologies of childbearing populations can impact
pregnancy outcomes.

Essay

1. How will the biologic variations discussed impact the nursing care of the childbearing woman and her family?
● Biological variations are variations that can occur as a result of a person's genetic make-up or a historical
context. The distinctions mentioned above influence the development of a zygote until it is born. Different
people are predisposed to various outcomes. Specialist care and monitoring to ensure that the embryo or
infant does not require the same treatment as the mother.
2. Describe the special needs of lesbian couples during the childbearing process. What are common prejudgments
about lesbian mothers and how can they affect care?
● For lesbian couples, it is mentioned in Medical News Today that they have a number of options depending
on their budget. Lesbians have the same options for pregnancy and children as heterosexual couples. Those
who want to avoid having sex with someone who has a penis may need to utilize assisted reproductive
technologies (ART) such intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). Non-pregnancy
options also include co-parenting and adoption or fostering. However, they may also face some challenges,
such as stigma and discrimination, make the transition to parenthood more stressful.
3. Compare traditional Western medical support for pregnant women with nontraditional sup- port, and describe
why both might be critical for successful pregnancy outcomes in women from diverse backgrounds.
● Traditional and complementary treatments are frequently used to treat maternity related health issues.
Traditional medicine or complementary and alternative medicine are used interchangeably depending on
the cultural or ethnic groups partaking in traditional health practices. Traditional medicine is employed in
developing places where Western medicine is not the major health care system, whereas complementary
and alternative medicine is used in research from Western countries.
To put it another way, traditional medicine is easily accessible to rural communities.
As a result, expectant mothers would receive the necessary healthcare without having to travel for how
many hours. Nontraditional support is only available to those who live in cities or are close to a hospital.
4. Why is it important to understand the differences between prescriptive and restrictive beliefs of a mother’s
behavior during pregnancy?
● As it is described in the research article of Ocbian (n.d.), prescriptive beliefs is when an expectant mother is
encouraged to be happy for this will have an effect on the baby; food cravings of the conceiving mother
should be provided and lactating mother should be given warm bath with water previously boiled with
guava and other medicinal leaves. While restrictive belief is when an expectant mother is wearing anything
around the neck like a shawl and a necklace, while watching scary movies or ugly images by the
conceiving mothers is prohibited because it would cause the baby to resemble that person or object. A
pregnant women should avoid witnessing an eclipse since it is believed to cause stillbirth. Determining the
sex of the baby through the appearance and behavior of the mother and shape of her abdomen is a popular
predictive belief. Therefore, knowing and understanding the difference between prescriptive and restrictive
beliefs can help healthcare professionals, specifically nurses, in understanding how an expectant mother
thinks and how to reorient or re educate the mother about her condition for a safe and healthy delivery.
