BAG PREPARATION
FUSING INTERFACING
Fuse woven interfacing to ALL pieces, except the Zipper Tab and optional Strap
Connector using the “block fuse”method as mentioned in the PREPARATION step on
page 3.
ZIPPER PREP
If you are using a store bought zipper, trim just under the top metal stop to remove it
and you’ll treat it like zipper by the yard now. Hand stitch or sew the coils together with
a zig zag stitch (to close the top of the zipper together and keep the pull on).
The zipper needs to have the top portion turned at a 90° angle. This can be done by
marking with a non-permanent line straight across the top of the zipper, about ⅝”
(1.6cm) from the zipper pull when zipped, or the top cut edge of continuous zipper
tape.
Trim off any excess zipper from the folded 90° angled edge.
Trim the zipper from the bottom to get the appropriate length. Your prepped zipper
should be 3¼” (8.2cm) for Small, 4¼” (10.8cm) for Smallish/Medium, 5¼” (13.2cm) for
Medium and 7¼” (18.3cm) for Large.
Mark down the center of the Zipper Tab, which will be ¾” (2cm). Fold each edge to the
center line and press. (I like to use a school glue stick on one side to keep it folded
down.) Place non-glued edge of the Zipper Tab right side down and flush with the end
of the zipper (right side up) and sew with a ¼” (6mm) seam allowance.
Fold the Zipper Tab down and wrap it around the end of the zipper. The bottom part of
the Zipper Tab will be slightly larger to ensure it is caught in the topstitching.
Topstitch the tab ⅛” (3mm) from the zipper. Trim any excess Zipper Tab fabric from the
sides to make it the same width as the zipper.
Mark down the center of the Strap Connector, which will be ½” (1.2cm).
Fold each edge to the center line and press. (I like to use a school glue stick to keep it
folded down.)
Fold Strap Connector in half and put the D-ring on. Measure ⅝” (1.6cm) from the
hardware and trim off the excess, baste the raw end to keep the D-ring on. Set aside for
now.
⅝”
Place an Exterior “A” (exterior fabric) and Exterior “B” (contrast fabric) right sides
together. Sew the long edge together with a ⅜” (1cm) seam allowance. Repeat to piece
the other Exterior "A" and Exterior "B" together.
Press the seams open and topstitch on each side of the seams. These will now be
referred to as the Exterior.
Mark the back of your pieces with an arrow so you know which way is up.
Take one Exterior and place it face up. Make a mark (within the seam allowance) on the
left side ½” (1.2cm) from the edge. Make another mark (within the seam allowance) on
the right side ⅝” (1.6cm) from the edge.
Place the top of the zipper (wrong side up) on the left hand marking. The tab at the
bottom of the zipper should line up with the right hand marking. Baste the zipper to the
Exterior.
½” ⅝”
Place the basted Exterior/zipper (wrong side up) on top of a Lining (right side up) and
sew with a ¼” (6mm) seam allowance. *TIP* Sewing it on the same side as it’s basted,
keeps the Lining from stretching. (Layers are offset and semi-transparent in diagram to
show detail.)
Repeat to attach the remaining Exterior and Lining to the other edge of the zipper but
reverse the markings on the remaining Exterior. Make a mark (within the seam
allowance) on the left side ⅝” (1.6cm) from the edge. Make another mark (within the
seam allowance) on the right side ½” (1.2cm) from the edge.
Mark a line on the bottom of the Linings 1” (2.5cm) and fold to the line.
⅝” ½”
If adding and optional Strap Connector place it ½” (1.2cm) down (on the zipper top
side) from the Exterior/Lining/zipper seam. Baste in place.
OPEN THE ZIPPER!!! Place the right sides of the Exterior together and the Lining right
sides together. Starting on the Exterior side, sew the long side edge with a ⅜” (1cm)
seam allowance. After going past the zipper area increase the seam allowance to ½”
(1.2cm). Repeat for the other side starting with the Exterior side.
Place the side seams of the Exterior together (it will be perpendicular to the zipper).
Sew with a ⅜” (1cm) seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance and corners, if you
prefer.
Place the side seams of the Lining together (also perpendicular to the zipper) and only
sew about ½” (1.2cm) in on each side with a ⅛” (3mm) seam allowance. Be sure to
backstitch at the beginning and end.
SIDE SEAM
SIDE SEAM
Turn the bag right side out and gently poke the corners out by the zipper ends. Press.
Pull the Lining out and close the turning hole with a small stitch length and seam
allowance. Push the Lining back into the bag and press well.
Use a school glue stick or DST and fold each side (except 1½” (3.8cm) on each end) to
the center line (leaving a slight gap so when you fold again it doesn’t bunch) and press.
Place the swivel clip on the Wristlet strap before folding the ends. Sew the short edges
together. Fold the seamed edges to the center like the rest of the strap.
1½” 1½”
Fold again and use a glue stick or DST to hold together. Topstitch the whole loop,
moving the swivel clip out of the way.
