Chapter 3:

Transportation
Transportation
by: Raihanah Batrisyia (3 Atria)
Objective(s)
Water is transported in the plants with the help of
conductive tissues and individual cells of the vascular
system. Water moves along the water potential
gradient and enters the root hairs and xylem through
either apoplast or symplast pathways.
Materials and apparatus :
a tablespoon of
vinegar plastic/glass
container
+ a tablespoon of sugar

syrup flavoured white lily flower

drink base instead
of food coloring

140ml water
Budgets:
Syrup Rose = RM 2.00
Vinegar = RM 2.00
Plastic/glass jar = RM 1.60/RM 5.00

(Honestly, I did not spend money for this project

because all the materials and apparatus are already
available at home and as for water lily plant, I got the
flowers for free.)
Procedure(s):
Mix the
Cut stem water with Insert
at 45 vinegar and
degree sugar, stir flower
until
dissolve

Pour Add 15- Wait for the

140ml in 20 drops changes that
to the food will happen
container to the petal
coloring flower
Result:
The result is quite disappointing
because the plant does not absorb
the solution very well but there is
a slight change at the end of the
flower petals, there is a slight
orange color. Only the stem turned
red.
Discussion:
i) Why is white lily flower is used?
White lily is used because there is no nearby florist and
this is the only available white flower.

ii) Is the eosin solution/dye spread evenly or does it have a specific

pattern in the leaf, stem and root of the plant?
Eosin is a red-colored water-soluble red stain. When the cut end of a
tree is put in eosin solution, the red-colored solution shows the ascent
of sap, eventually, turning the xylem elements, flowers, etc. to turn red.
Conclusion :
i. What have you learned from this activity?
I learned how the transportation happened and how the water
moves inside the stem.

ii. What are the challenges you faced when doing this activity?
How do you overcome it?
The challenges that I faced is I use syrup to replace food coloring
although it is not strong as food coloring. As long as it works, I think
its fine.

iii. Can you suggest applications from the knowledge/skills gained in

this activity?
The function of sugar in the solutions is like glucose. The plant converts
glucose + oxygen into water + carbon dioxide.
