MAYANA PLANT (COLEUS ATROPURPUREUS BENTH) AS NATURE FRIENDLY PEN INK

INTRODUCTION

Ink is a liquid or paste that contains pigments or dyes and is used

to color a surface to produce an image, text, or design. It is also used for
drawing or writing with a pen, brush, or quill. We all know that this thing
plays an important role in writing, artworks, calligraphy etc. It is also
important to the students but many did not know that pens have limitations.
Usually, it is a problem for students and calligraphers to supply ink for the
pens they are using. That’s why the researchers aspired to make an ink that is
much better than the common ink and aside from it, the researchers want to make
an ink that is nature friendly. Because the researchers found that the inks that
are typically used in most pens are made from synthetic materials like the
petroleum and chemical solvents. These kinds of materials are hazardous
especially to the health of the user and to the environment as well.

The researchers look for the components of Mayana to know the other
use of this plant aside from being a medicinal plant. The researchers discover
that the Mayana plant (Coleus Atropurpureus Benth) can be an alternative
ingredient in making pen ink instead of using petroleum that has a bad effect on
our health. Mayana foliage is rich in colored molecule like anthocyanins, it is
a pigment that gives red, purple, and blue color. Based on the informations that
the researchers gather, therefore the researchers conclude that this plant has a
potential to be an ingredient in making a pen ink.

BACKGROUND

The Mayana plant is not that popular. It’s a household plant here in the
Philippines for its brightly colored foliage, usually this plants are just grown
for landscaping or ornamental purposes. These plants will grow well in moist
well-drained soil of up to 2 meters high. It can easily be grown from cuttings.
So the researchers seek for other informations to know it's purpose aside from
being medicinal plant. As pertaining to the informations that the researchers
gathered Mayana plant (Colues Atropurpureus Benth) has a anthocyanins it is a
pigment that gives red, purple, bluecolor and it is usually found in berries,
red onions etc. It’s pigment can be use as one of the ingredients in making a
pen ink and because of that potential the researchers forced to study more about
mayana. Mayana plant usually grows on tropical areas in Asia, Australia and
Africa.

Though mayana plant is not that popular, the reseachers still continue this
research, because the researchers want to know the use of anthocyanins to make
the hazardous thing into a nature friendly product.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1.CAN MAYANA PLANT CAN BE USED AS ALTERNATIVE PEN INK?

2.IS THERE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COMMERCIAL PEN INK AND MAYANA
PEN INK?

3.WHAT ARE THE PROCEDURES IN MAKING NATURE FRIENDLY MAYANA PEN INK?

*PROCEDURES*

STEP1.POUR ONE-HALF CUP OF MAYANA EXTRACT INTO A STRAINER.

STEP2.ADD JUST ENOUGH OF WATER AND ADD ONE HALF TEASPOON OF VINEGAR,ONE HALF
TEASPOON OF SALT INTO THE LIQUID.THESE WILL HELP PRESERVE THE COLOR AND
FRESHNESS OF THE INK.

STEP3.EXTRACT SMALL AMOUNTS OF INK FROM THE BOWL USING THE SYRINGE.RELEASE THE
INK INTO AN EMPTY BALLPEN CARTRIDGE.REPEAT UNTIL THE CARTRIDGE IS FULL,THEN
REPLACE IT IN THE BALLPEN.

HYPOTHESIS
Ha1.MAYANA PLANT EXTRACT CAN BE USED AS PEN INK.
Ha2.THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COMMERCIAL PEN INK AND MAYANA
PEN INK.
CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Mayana plant
 cutting board
 knife
 stove
 water
 4 bowl
 Strainer
 glass jar
 empty pen
 saucepan
 thyme oil
 Gum Arabic

PROCEDURE

 Pick out a plant source to extract your ink from.

 Cut it into pieces using the knife and cutting board. Do it safely.
 Add the Mayana Plant that you cutted into the saucepan
 Add enough water for additional extract
 Put the Gum Arabic into the separated container enable to get it melted.
 Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer covered on the stove for approximately 15-20 minutes. The
pigment from the plant material will slowly begin to color the water in your saucepan.
 Separate the excess pieces in the liquid mixture.
 When the color of the water is rich in color , remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the dye to
cool.
 If there are pieces of material in your saucepan, separate the dye into another bowl using a strainer
and set the bowl of dye aside.
 If your plant source dissolved, just pour the liquid into a bowl and set it aside
 Now that you have your homemade ink you are ready to put it in the empty pen. And also add the
melted Gum Arabic to it.
