Amara’s Pink Paper Plane

In Tamanan Elementary School, there was a Muslim girl named Amara. She is nine (9)

years old and a grade 3 pupil. One day, Amara and her friend Hareem went to school. Her

teacher Ms. Grace, their science teacher, required them to bring a paper plane for their activity

the following day for the contest.

The day before the activity, Amara and her mother went to the Department store in the

city to buy pink papers for her paper plane contest. Her mother asks Amara to grab a push cart

and hand it to her. As Amara handed her the cart, her mother asked her – "Do you know what

law in physics applied when we push and pull the cart?" “No mom,” she replied. Her mother

explained to Amara that the law in Physics applied was Force and Motion. She added that when

we move things from one place to another, we are creating motion and with that motion we

created corresponds to our weight. Amara was amazed!

After they bought the materials, they went home and after that she went to her room

and started making the paper plane. First, she folded the paper in half horizontally. Second, she

folded the top corners of the paper into the center line after unfolding it. Then, she folded the

top edges into the middle, and she folded the plane in half towards her. Meanwhile, in order to

fold the wings, she lined up the top edges of the body of the paper plane. Meanwhile, the paper

plane was finished. It was a firm and gorgeous pink paper plane. Amara was excited to show

her pink paper plane to her classmates.

On the day of the contest, Ms. Grace came into their classroom and explained to them

the criteria for their contest on paper plane flying. The room was filled with much excitement

and everyone was busy preparing for the said activity. Amara was really excited.

Then, Ms. Grace announced that everyone must prepare the paper planes for takeoff.

They all went to the playground. The teacher called her pupils one by one. Hareem, her friend,

got ready for her take-off. She raised her hand and swiftly threw her paper plane up to the air.

Later, Amara’s turn came. She was nervous at first because she over-thought if her paper plane

wouldn’t survive. Meanwhile, she lifted her hand and quickly threw the pink paper plane in the

air. Her pink paper plane flew into the air. Faiza’s plane was first on the lead. Eventually, she

won the contest.

After the activity, Faiza curiously asked her teacher, Ms. Grace, about the reasons and

possibilities on why the paper plane flies into the air. Ms. Grace explained well to her class

with Faiza, that Air Resistance Force slows down falling objects due to the atmosphere and

surface area of the object.

Everyone was amazed and went home with another learning experience.
