What can you see
in a map?
MAP TITLE
★ A map’s title gives us our first clue about its content.

★ It usually describes the area shown on the map.

★ It also identifies the map’s main topic.

MAP KEY
★ A map key or legend is included with a map to unlock it.

★ It gives you the information needed for the map to make sense.

★ Map keys are often boxes in the corner of the map, and the

information they give you is essential to understanding the map.

MAP SCALE
★ A map scale is a ratio of the distance on a map to the actual

distance of the ground.

★ Map scales can usually be found on the outer edge of a map, usually

near the map's key

★ Many maps include a grid pattern, or a series of crossing lines that
create squares or rectangles.
★ The grid helps people locate places on the map.
★ The grid is often made up of latitude and longitude lines.
LONGITUDE
Longitude lines run north-south, from pole to pole
LATITUDE
Latitude lines run east-west around the globe, parallel
to the Equator
EQUATOR
★ An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a
planet
★ An equator divides the planet into a Northern
Hemisphere and a Southern Hemisphere.
PRIME MERIDIAN
The prime meridian is the line of 0 longitude, the
starting point for measuring distance both east and
west around the Earth

★ A compass rose, a drawing showing different directions

on a map, is usually found somewhere on the edge of a

map

★ It shows the four cardinal directions, which are north,

south, east, and west.
