Text I (14 pts.)
Read the text below and mark the best choice according to the text.

1 Many people dream of immigrating to another country, that is, moving there forever. However, for most of
them, these dreams do not come true. Even for those whose dreams come true, life may become difficult.
Immigrants often face challenges in their new homes that they did not know about before they immigrated.
Many have had horrible experiences in their native countries. They have known war, poverty (not having
enough money), and crime, but this does not prepare them for the problems that they face in their new
environment.

2 The first challenges that immigrants have include getting a job, finding a place to live, buying food, and
starting their children in their new schools. There are also day-to-day difficulties like learning where
important places are and how to get to them. All of this may happen while an immigrant is learning a new
language, and this makes his or her life even more difficult.

3 Another challenge that immigrants face is discrimination. Discrimination means behaving differently
towards people according to their culture, religion, race, age, disabilities, gender, or sexual orientation. For
instance, if people are not given a job or are not allowed to rent an apartment in a certain area because of
their ethnic background or culture, it is called cultural discrimination. Immigrants often face discrimination
about their nationalities, or the countries that they come from. This is also a type of cultural discrimination.
For example, some people in the US think that all Mexicans have entered the country illegally, that all
Koreans are hard-working, or that the Chinese do not want to learn the language and culture of their new
country. There are also myths (false beliefs) about immigrants in general. Some people say that they take
good jobs from native citizens, cause an increase in crime, and do not pay for services like education or
health care. These beliefs are mostly untrue, but the misconceptions can make life difficult for immigrants.

4 Another type of problem that immigrants face is family problems. One of these is the fact that immigrant
parents often work two or more jobs in order to pay for all their family’s needs. As a result, they do not see
their children very often, and they feel disconnected from them. This problem increases when the children
become integrated into the new culture, i.e., when they become a part of it. The children of immigrants do
not understand their parents very well anymore after they have forgotten their native customs.

5 Although immigrants face all these problems and more, most of them keep a positive attitude (way of
thinking) about their lives. For many, life in the new country is better than it was in their homeland. They
hope that it will improve even more over time. They also look forward to the lives that their children will
have in the new country. In the end, even though there are huge difficulties, most immigrants do not feel
bad about their decision to leave home.

7
43. Immigrants aren’t ready for the problems they face in their new country because ______.
a) their dreams did not come true
b) they have a lot of difficulties
c) they have had bad experiences
d) they do not know about them before they go
44. An immigrant’s first challenges become harder when s/he ______.
a) does not know how to find places
b) is learning a new language
c) has children in school
d) cannot find a good job
45. According to the text, immigrants often face ______ discrimination.
a) sexual
b) age
c) cultural
d) religious
46. Which is not an example of the ideas that people in the US have about immigrants?
a) Chinese do not learn new languages.
b) Koreans work very hard.
c) Americans do not give jobs to foreigners.
d) Mexicans do not come to the US legally.
47. If a person feels disconnected from another person, s/he probably ______.
a) has become integrated into the culture
b) does not have much in common with him / her
c) does not remember his / her native customs
d) works two or more jobs
48. Which is not a reason that most immigrants have a positive attitude?
a) They are planning to return to their homelands.
b) They think their lives in the new country will get better.
c) Their lives were worse in their home countries.
d) They believe their children will have a better life.
49. The text is mainly about ______.
a) the difficulties that immigrants face in their new country
b) types of discrimination against immigrants
c) the differences between immigrants from different countries
d) the experiences of immigrants in their native country

Text II (16 pts.)

Changing Greenland
1 Greenland is the largest island on Earth that is not a continent, but it has a very small population of only 56,000.
Although it has a capital city and a prime minister, Greenland is not a country. It belongs to Denmark. Many
Greenlanders live close to the coast (seashore) because a large part of the island is covered with ice and glaciers
(large ice fields). Around a quarter of all the people live in the capital, Nuuk, which is on the west coast. The
island’s traditional industry – and its biggest – is fishing, and Greenland exports a lot of fish; that is, it sells it to
other countries. Even though this is true, the island still imports (buys from other countries) more goods than it
exports. Therefore, it has economic problems. Now, however, life is about to change dramatically for many
Greenlanders, and all because of the weather.

2 Most scientists agree that the world’s climate is getting warmer, and the difference can already be seen in
Greenland. For example, small icebergs, which are about the size of city buses, are floating near the coast. They
have broken off from much larger areas of ice in the ocean because of the increase in the air and water
temperature. Moreover, the huge sheet of ice which covers Greenland is shrinking (getting smaller) by 75 cubic
kilometers (km3) each year. If all of Greenland’s ice melts, sea levels all over the world will rise by 7.5 meters.

3 One industry that is benefiting from the melting ice is the oil industry. Nowadays, the sea around the west coast
of Greenland has no ice during six months of the year. This means that oil companies can look for oil in this
area. They plan to drill into the seabed for oil in the next few years. Some Greenlanders like the idea. They say
that the oil companies will provide a lot of jobs for Greenlanders. Moreover, Greenland will get money from oil
and natural gas exports. The island also won’t need to import oil or gas anymore. However, some Greenlanders
have negative feelings about this modern development. The island’s prime minister, Kuupik Kleist, explains the
dilemma: “The people who live in the Arctic are the ones who are affected by climate change the most. We all
know that burning fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, increases the speed of climate change. If oil
companies take oil from Greenland and sell it, people in other countries will have more oil to burn. As a result,
climate change will become worse and Greenland’s ice will melt faster. However, we need a strong economy,
and we have to use the good things that oil brings us. At the moment, we do not have any other natural
resources that have as much potential as oil.”

4 Farming is another industry that will change. Because it is near the Arctic Circle, Greenland has had very long
winters and very short summers in the past. Now, as a result of climate change, the growing season is longer.
Spring arrives earlier than before, and the island now has longer summers. In a way, this is a good development
because it will allow Greenland to produce more of its own food, so it won’t need so many imports. However,
some farmers are worried because they think the drier summers might create new problems. For example, last
year, because the weather was extremely dry, farmers produced just half the normal amount of food. Every
year, farmers in Greenland have a celebration before the summer begins. They sing a traditional song about the
importance of summer in a place where, in the past, the winters were very long and the summers were short.
As nature and the weather change in Greenland, will the farmers still sing this song in a hundred years’ time?
Maybe not.

D. LECTURE (2 pts. each; 6 pts.)

Listen to the lecture about freediver Amelie Pompe. You will hear the lecture only ONCE. As you listen, mark
the alternative which best answers each question or completes each statement. Now, you have 45 seconds to
read the questions and the alternatives.

Good morning. Let’s get started. Last time, we talked about windsurfing and kite-surfing, and today I’m going to
tell you a little about freediving, and about a freediver called Amelie Pompe. Freediving is a general term. It means
any type of underwater sport without equipment to help you breathe. These sports are done in deep water, not
in shallow water. Freediving also includes sports like underwater hockey and underwater football. Because
freedivers cannot use any breathing equipment, they have to take a deep breath (takes a breath) before they dive
under the water.

Freediving was practiced in ancient cultures to gather fish and other things from the sea. However, these days,
most people freedive as a sport. There is one type of freediving where a diver goes very deep under the water.
This is the most difficult type. A Swedish woman called Amelie Pompe holds the world record in freediving. She
dove down 126 meters into the Red Sea with no air.

Amelie loves being in the sea, and she likes swimming without a lot of equipment. She says that equipment
makes her slow. This is not a good thing for a swimmer. She feels better when she can move faster. Amelie
spends every weekend training in the sea. When she is preparing for a freediving competition, she trains
for about 20 hours a week. However, she also has time for other sports, and these help her prepare for
freediving. For example, she does yoga in the mornings because it helps her relax and stretch her muscles.
She also goes running, does some weightlifting and goes cycling.

Amelie also likes mountain climbing, and next year she is planning to climb Mount Everest. If she succeeds
in reaching the top of Mount Everest, she will have another world record. (fade out)

Speaker A: This is the end of the listening section. Now, go on to the rest of the exam.
