GOA

Goa is an enchanting land blessed with exotic landscapes, silvery golden beaches, green hills, lip
smacking sea food and other tangible and intangible allures. On the western coast of India, the tiny
emerald land of Goa lies on the slopes of the Western Ghats hill range.
Until 1961 it was under the Portuguese rule and only in 1987 Goa was declared a state with Panjim
as the capital . Goa is a perfect beach destination with a rich history. It is the smallest state in
India by area but highest in tourist in flow.

The Goa International Airport is the Dabolim Airport is 30 km away from Panjim.

Goa has two rail lines; one is operated the South Western Railway the other is the Konkan Railway.
The main railway station is Madgaon station in Margao & Thivim in Calangute.

Goa is well linked with National Highway Numbers 66, 4A,. Goa has a total of 220 km of national
highways, 230 km of state highway and 800 km of district highway.

Beaches of Goa

Churches of Goa

1. Bom Jesus Basilica Being a UNESCO heritage site, this church is world renowned to still
host the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.
2. Se Cathedral This church is one of the largest in India whilst being amongst the famous
churches in Goa too. Being one of the oldest in south India , the Se Cathedral was built to
celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Afonso de Albuquerque for capturing a Goan
city in 1510. Inside the church, there is a large bell called the Golden Bell – which is the
largest in the state.

3. Church of St Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic church& a museum located in North


Goa. Statues of Christ and of St. Francis of Assisi.

4. Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception this is one of the oldest and most
famous churches in Goa. The 17th century structure is in Panaji.

5. Church of St. Cajetan Considered to be amongst the most beautiful churches in Goa, the
Church resembles the St. Peter’s Church in Rome & is built with laterite block

Temples of Goa

1. The Mangueshi Temple Located about 21 km from Panaji, is an important Hindu temple
Dedicated to lord Shiva and has the Shivalinga
2. The Mahalaxmi Temple Located in Panaji, was the first Hindu temple allowed to be built by
the Portuguese in Goa. The deity considered a peaceful form of the goddess and wears
a linga on her head and is made of black stone with four hands. The main festivals are Navaratri
and Chaitra Purnima
3. Shantadurga Temple has the idol is made of five metals and is one foot in height. The deity
is known as "Jagrit Devta" and holds a Trishula.
4. The Kamakshi Temple is dedicated to Kamakshi , originally a deity from Guwahati, Assam.
She is also known as Parvati.

Excursions
1. Dudhsagar Falls is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the border of Indian
states of Karnataka and Goa.
2. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is an estuarine mangrove habitat which is declared as a bird
sanctuary and located on western tip of the Island of Chorao along the river Mandovi, Goa.
3. The Fatorda Stadium, officially known as the Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium, is a multi-purpose
stadium situated in Margao, Goa. The venue has been used to host both international football
as well as cricket matches.
4. Fort Aguada and its lighthouse is a well-preserved seventeenth-century Portuguese fort,
overlooking the Arabian Sea. Today the Taj Heritage Resort & Casino.
5. Goa State Museum, also known as the State Archaeology Museum, Panaji, is a museum in
Goa, India. Established in 1977, it contains departments including Ancient History and
Archaeology, Art and Craft, and Geology.
