Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the content area, and taking your Personal Mission
Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal long term
BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for your
BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year old
person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person should be
considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall life/lifestyle
aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or entrepreneurial vision you
have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to you. What it needs to be is
BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK BEYOND GRADUATE
DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS
WORLD?

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My huge life changing goal is, I want to be recognized as an up and coming designer and
own a sustainable clothing brand. I also want to start a non-profit company that redesigns
old and used clothes for those in need.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

These two goals go hand in hand with one another. They allow me to pursue a leadership
role in my career as well as allow me to help others in need. Ever since I was 5 I was told
that I was a natural leader, that is part of the reason I decided to pursue an Organizational
Leadership degree. Coming from a family of nurses and doctors I too wanted to help
others, by creating a company that repurposes old clothing for the less fortunate I am able
to help others as well. By meeting these two goals I will be achieving my dreams while
also supporting others as well.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

1
Last Update: May 2021
I am halfway there. I strive to share development and create opportunities for myself and
others. My BHAG aligns with this statement because it allows me to develop my abilities and
create opportunities for others.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

I am committed to being the best son and employee I can be while advancing in and
finding success in my studies as well as my career in order to provide a comfortable life
for a family. My BHAG aligns with this statement because it allows me to strive for
success in my career as well as my personal life in order for my family to be comfortable.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Being financially stable -1- This is the most difficult obstacle. In order to start a company
like I am planning you must have the money for all products, marketing, advertising, and
development. As a 21 year old full time student this is especially difficult.

Establishing the right connections -2- This is difficult for another reason. In order for a
clothing brand to get established it must be accepted by not only its customer but also its
competitors and investors. Finding the right people that are willing to invest in a risky
venture is quite difficult. Word of mouth is monumental in clothing companies, people
will ask where you got an item if they too want to have it.

Accepting that it will take time -3- In our day and age it is common for the younger
generation to expect something to be there right when they want it. As a founder of a
company you must be patient and willing to accept loss. The way it was explained to me
was, “It is like growing a tree, slow in the beginning, but after a while you get fruits
every season.”

Failing -4- Most small startups don’t last 10 years, understanding that there will be times
when it seems like a hope is lost and pushing on anyways is vital. If one thing doesn’t
work, then change it. Change it until it does work. Adapting to wins and losses is
important for any leadership position.

Gathering materials -5- Gathering the materials is the last obstacle standing in the way.
Finding the right clothing items that can be repurposed is a tedious task. Even after
finding the material, designing the new product is a challenge in itself. It will take time
but it is possible.

Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in the
textbook. Why?

I would like it to be an organizational career. I would make sure that there were certain
goals that team members had to achieve in order to receive a promotion. There would be
attainable goals that members would have to complete at work, goals that they would
know prior to coming into work. With a Protean career too much responsibility is given
to individuals and opportunities could pass by. With an organizational career it allows for
development as well as opportunities for team members to improve as a team.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I would love to take the path that moves me up in the organization. With my goal this
would allow me to experience all levels of the organization. I would have the experience
in every position possible. I will be able to identify areas of concern and rectify them
upon advancement. If any members had questions I would be able to answer them based
on my experience.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I see myself working a flexible work schedule. Not only would that allow me to spend
time with my family but it would also allow me to make my own schedule and work
hours. As a founder of a company it is likely that I will be taking a salary or percentage of
the overall profit. However I would like for my team members to work a set schedule in
order for the company to run efficiently.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Graduate college with honors in December 2022

2. Work in a well paying job ($20+) for at least 3 years
3. Begin a small company that repurposes old clothing in 2025 or 2026
4. Hire a team member by 2028
5. Establish a company name/brand and website by 2030
6. Have a team of 8 by 2031
7. Advance into philanthropy by donating to third world countries by 2033
8. Become a US based non profit by 2040
9. Balance both non-profit and clothing company (sustainable non-profit and
profiting company) by 2050
10. Open a clothing donation center as well as an in person shop by 2055
2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. What are the 3 most precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides
time, to achieve your BHAG? Why?

Hobbies -1- The first thing that I would sacrifice would be my hobbies. Currently I am a
volleyball coach and have been playing volleyball since high school, it is something that I
love doing. However, I am willing to sacrifice them in order for my BHAG to become
reality. It will free up my time and allow me to focus on advancing my career towards the
final goal.

Money -2- Money is the second thing that I would be willing to sacrifice. In order to
achieve my goal I must be able to sacrifice money for the realization of the goal. Starting
a company will take time and money, usually it takes more than we anticipated and that's
because of unforeseen obstacles. As a founder we invest a good portion of our money
into new ventures.

Family -3- The last thing that I would be willing to sacrifice would be the time spent with
family and friends. This is a hard one to sacrifice, however it is necessary (for a time) if I
want to achieve my goal. Currently I spend a good portion of the week spending time
with family and friends. This time could be better spent on growing my company and
doing what is necessary to provide for myself and others. Family is a priority, I want

them to be comfortable and I must be willing to sacrifice time with them to make that
happen.

Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

My number one goal is to start a non-profit that repurposes old clothes into sustainable
fashion for those in need.

a. Specific

i. I want to create a company that redesigns and repurposes old clothes into
new fashion. After that is established I want to share what I do with those
in need, in order to give them the chance to feel comfortable in their own
clothes. It will take time and effort in order to run a company that has at
least 8 team members and a physical store.

b. Measurable

i. I will measure my progress against the outline that I have provided above,
I should achieve my goal by 2055.

c. Attainable

i. This is attainable because it would start as a small business that would

eventually grow into a reputable clothing company. Small businesses are
relatively easy to start up but require effort to grow.

d. Relevant

i. This matters to me because I want to have a career where I love what I do
while also helping those in need. I want to be able to provide for my
family in a way that makes me proud.

e. Time-Based

i. The time that I estimate it will take to achieve this goal is approximately
33 years.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

My second goal is to start a sustainable clothing brand.

a. S

i. Like above, I want to create a company that redesigns and repurposes old
clothes into new fashion. After that is established I want to share what I do
with those in need, in order to give them the chance to feel comfortable in
their own clothes. It will take time and effort in order to run a company
that has at least 8 team members and a physical store.

b. M

i. Similar to above, I will measure this against the same outline. I should
accomplish my goal by 2031

c. A

i. This is attainable because it will start out as a small business and then it
will grow. There are small business loans that you can take out to invest in
the company.

d. R

i. This is relevant because it will allow me to do a career that I enjoy. I want

to be happy, that includes at work and at home.

e. T

i. This goal should take me about 9 or 10 years to achieve.
